Hastings said, however, be would not support wine and beer legislation. Regardless of what action congress takes towards repeal, Hastings said he would Introduce In the coming short session a bill to provide that no federal money shall be used to en force the Volstead act In stntes that do not provide for the enforcement of the eighteenth smendment. "My proposal," he added, "leaves the states to do Just exactly as they please with respect to the liquor question." Hastings said the recent announce ment attributed to the governor of California that he would pardon those convicted of violating the state en forcement law "demonstrates the ne cesslty of rome drastic action to pre vent the conflict between a federal and state law from becoming more I ridiculous." M'EWAN CAN HELP WORCESTER, Mass., Nov. 35. p) A preliminary hearing on the bill in equity of Captain John J- McEwan for an injunction to restrain the trustees of Holy Cross college from Interfering with his duties as coach of the football team was opened in superior court tocUy and after an hour of discussion, was suspended until counsel can get college offic ials to the court to show cause why the preliminary injunction should not be granted. Counsel for Captain McEwan re cited how Important It Is for Captain McEwan to act as coach of Holy Cross in the game with Boston college to morrow, saying ills reputation as s coach is at stake If he is not rein stated following his suspension by the college on November 9. Counsel for the college came to court to argue law why an Injunction should nji be granted, and Judge Winfred Whit ing Indicated that In the absence of evidence to the contrary, the alle gations In the bill of complaint should be taken as they were recited. A crowd, announced by stadium of ficials to number 11,044, took advan tage of the all but perfect football weather brisk but clear to see one of the fastest games plsyed here this sesson. Tigers Show Flash. Held by a strong Medford wall for some time sfter the game opened. Jefferson broke through to march from mldfleld by end runs, laterals and line plunges and score their first touchdown near the end of the first period. The second period was score less as Medford turned back each Jefferson threat. After Medford lost the ball on their own 49, attempting unsuccessfully to make a yard on fourth down, Jef ferson kicked to the Medford 10. Gll insky, Medford halfback, fumbled on a running play and Jefferson recov ered on the Medford 5. Three plunges at center netted but three yards, then Heimbucher skirted right end to score standing up. Later In the third period Medford tried a pass from their own 11. Jones of Jefferson Intercepted and romped 12 yards to score. Jeff scored twice more in the final period, once on a 60-yard drive through center from the Medford 4. A Medford fumble, recovered by VI ken, Jeff guard, on the Medford 26, started the final scoring drive. On the very next play Hergert twisted through center, shook off the sec ondary and scored. Jefferson con verted three of the five tries for points after touchdowns.
