WASHINGTON, Nov. 35. (AP)
Proponents of a change In the federal
liquor Uws today drew support from
Senator Hastings, Delaware Republi
can and long a supporter of prohibi
tion, who announced he not only
would vote to submit a repeal amend
mentr but would Introduce a bill to
withdraw national enforcement from
states which do not co-operate In I
carrying out the prohibition laws. !
Hastings said, however, be would
not support wine and beer legislation.
Regardless of what action congress
takes towards repeal, Hastings said he
would Introduce In the coming short
session a bill to provide that no
federal money shall be used to en
force the Volstead act In stntes that
do not provide for the enforcement of
the eighteenth smendment.
"My proposal," he added, "leaves
the states to do Just exactly as they
please with respect to the liquor
question."
Hastings said the recent announce
ment attributed to the governor of
California that he would pardon those
convicted of violating the state en
forcement law "demonstrates the ne
cesslty of rome drastic action to pre
vent the conflict between a federal
and state law from becoming more
I ridiculous."
