irTTDFOTtD MAIL TRTBTTNE, irEPFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, NOVEPBET? 23, 1932. PAGE THREE VOLSTEAD REPEAL HELD VITAL NEED WASHINGTON, Nov. 25. (AP) Representative Snell of New York, Re publican boue leader, today urged adoption at the abort session of con gress a resolution to repeal the 18th amendment. Speaker Garner baa said be hoped and expected congress would legalize beer before the new year. Snell, long ranked as a friend of the prohibition amendment, told newspaper men the people of the country would not be satisfied with beer of small alcoholic content. "There Is no question In my mind . that the people of the country are not satisfied with the 18th amend ment," he aald. "Not only the weta but the real temperance people believed that some regulation of the liquor traffic would be better than the speakeasies we have at present. "The best way, to my mind, to han dle this Is for the house Judiciary committee to Immediately bring up for consideration a constitutional amendment along the lines of that proposed by Senator Carter Olass, of Virginia, In the Senate last year.M The Glass proposition provided for the federal government to retain con stitutional power to protect dry states from liquor Importations, and to out law the saloon. "I would vote for such an amend ment," aid Snell. "The Glass amend ment Is almost exactly In accord with the wet plank of the Republican plat form. "We should get action at the earliest possible time and the quicker we get the prohibition question out of Washington the quicker we can give Intelligent consideration to the big economic problems confronting this country." Snell said he would want to see the proposed Democratic beer bill be fore he committed himself on It. . (AP) The do minion government was requested to convene a world wheat conference In a resolution approved at today's ses sion of the Alberta wheat pool's an nual meeting. Delegates believed such a conference would lead to sta bilized wheat prices and solve the present marketing problem. The leading wheat-exporting coun tries of the world would attend the proposed conference. They would be Canada, Australia, United States and Argentina, who control 87 -per cent of the world export wheat supply. "The resolution, .unanimously ap proved by the pool delegates, referred to the serious plight of the wbeac farmer, due to the drastic drop in prices and the lack of markets for his product. The delegates believed' only by co-operation between the flour ex porting countries could a solution to the problem of markets and low prices be found. 4 HOME OWNED AND OPERATED If you want to save money as yon never tiave before, this Is the place for you to shop.
