Comment on the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS rrs election la held on Tuesday, (She votee are counted on Tues day night and Wednesday morning, and by Wednesday evening the truly epochal nature of the Democratic landslide becomes known. On Thursday, the stock market goea up 4.1 points, aa measured by tha Standard Statistics table of aver ages printed In this newspaper. THE loea of confidence, temporary, at least, that waa expected to follow the election of Roosevelt doesnt aeem to have materialised, doea It? THERE la' little croaking on the streets. Hard-boiled Republlcane, who voted for Hoover and believed t that Hoover'a election would atlmu late business whereas Roosevelt's would cause a set-buck, are laughing already and admitting that they were wrong. , This writer, by the way, la one of them. QENATOR MOSES, of New Hamp- ahlre, who has been a senator ao long that no one can remember very distinctly when he wasn't, goes down to defeat along with the rest of the crew of Ins. It waa Moses, you remember, who made the famoua remark about the aona of wild Jackasses. What do you reckon he thinks about It now? 1 'HiS landslide catches Smoot, of Utah, who waa supposed to be permanent Institution In the sen ate of the United Statea. NOTHING la permanent in a year like this. It seems probable that If even Borah, of Idaho, had been up for re-election he might have gone down. THERE are some amusing angles. In Iowa, Henry Field battled Brook- hart to a standstill last spring, beat ing htm decisively, Hie vtotory -waa heralded all over the country as a matter of keen Interest, i Brookhart, not being an especially good sport. Jumped the reservation and ran Independent after his defeat by Field. A DEMOCRAT walks away handily with the Job, leaving both Field and Brookhart stranded. ejHE old leadership of the Republl can party has been swept away, and new leaden will have to be de Teloped before the Republlcane can be even an effective party of op position. That la probably a good thing both for the oountry and for the Re publican party Itself. If there la one conclusion on that atanda out from Tuesday's election like a light house en a dark shore, It Is this: The country has lost confidence UTTERLY In the leadership of the Republican party, which with a few brief intervale has been the party in power ever since the Civil War. T WILL do the party good to be shaken loose from Its old leader ship. It will now have to go out and develop a new set of leaders In which the country WILL have confidence, That Is, It will have to If It has any hope of ever getting back Into power. The desire to get back Into power Is the moat powerful of all political Influences, ao it may be assumed that the Republlcane will make a mighty effort to develop leadership that will eommand public confidence. fJERE Is an Interesting thought When the Republican party starts In to develop new leadership. It will find Senator McNarv of Oresnn o.. oupylng a place of great prominence in the list of prospects And Senator Stelwer, by the way, "111 be something of a figure Washington, for at thla moment appears that ha was ahnnt mw Republican senator In the country wno came up for re-election and I got away with It. MEIER PONDERING SELECTIVE SALES ' TAX FOR OREGON Governor. Says Plan Only Way Prevent Restoration State Tax On Property Bankrupting Counties. PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 13. (AP) Governor Julius L. Meier In a atatement to the press tonight said he la considering recommending to the state legislature that a selective sales tax be enacted. The governor, pointing out that eight or more states are now using sales tax as a temporary means of raising funds, said that such a tax .would probably be the only means of preventing the restoration of the state tax on property which waa lifted last year. Resumption of the property tax, he said, would result virtually In bankrupting some of the counties. He said he had not yet arrived at any definite con clusions on the selective sales tax. May Call Session Legislators, pointing out that the budget must be made up In Decem ber, expressed the opinion today that Governor Meier may call a special session of the legislature be fore the end of December to con alder a sales tax. Governor Meier, however, waa allent on the aubject. Although the savlnga achieved under my administration total con alderably more than $7,000,000 there has been euch a tremendous shrink age In atate revenue that the restor ation of the property tax levy la In evitable now that the supplementary Income tax measure has failed, un less waya and means can be devised to obtain revenue from some other source," Governor Meier's statement read. By John F. Chester (Associated Press Staff Writer) ON BOARD PRESIDENTIAL SPEC IAL, Enroute to Washington, Nov. 13. (AP) Taking time out on hts return trip eastward from his Palo Alto, Calif., home to inspect Hoover dam In Nevada under floodlights to night, President Hoover moved today to that big project through a series of ovations. Prom his train at Olendale, Calif., this morning he delivered his first address since the victory of his Democratic successor. Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, advising Re publicans not to 'be discouraged by defeat" and asserting that the Re publican party "will return to pow er." Must Have Unity Before a crowd at the station, the president urged Republicans to im mediately strengthen their state, county and precinct organizations to be ready for "mlllant action." 'If we are to continue the recov ery so evidently In progress during the past few months by overcoming the many difficulties which stlu confront us," he said, "we must have continued unity In constructive ac tion along the economic front. "I shall work for that unity during the remaining four months of this administration. Furthermore, It Is our duty after the fourth of March to cooperate with our opponents in every sound measure for the restor ation of prosperity. 1 am making an early return to Washington In special concern that the meaaures and Instrumentalities which we have In motion on an en tirely non-partisan basis shall con tinue to function vigorously and contribute their utmost."
