I then wltudrew the cork from the second bottle and did likewise, with the ex ception of one glass which I drank. (AP) Announcement that Lady Astor, the former Nancy Langhorne of Virginia, will come to Richmond and speak at the opening of the community fund campaign on November 10 was made today after a trans-Atlantlo tele phone conversation between the Brit ish peeress and parliament member and Julian M. Hall, Richmond bank- . Menaan Who's Looney Now? 'T'HE present status of the presidential campaign recalls a remark made by the late Lord Bryce: "During the height of a presidential campaign (In America) It U doubtful If anyone remain quite aane. It hu been my obaervatlon that those who moat emphatically deny emotional lnatablllty, are often thoee who are moat plainly vlctlma of the prevailing psychosis." Lord Bryce was the author of the most penetrating and authentic analysis of American politics ever written, and what he found true nearly a generation ago, is undoubtedly true today. llOfO one is quite sane, and whole, we fear, will not 8th of November. So we must expect to find such evidences of irrational cerebration as continue to provide amusement for those who ure able to retain, both their sense and their Bense of humor. For example : The recently accepted organ county brands the endorsement nor Meier, "as political propoganda of the most vicious type, endorsement of a cause that has brought ruin and disaster, and if successful, will mean "a complete breakdown of the present order of things, bloodshed will munism, that most dread reaction to special privilege, will gain impetus, and there will be retributions on a scale never dreamed of." And leading this incendiary outburst is the declaration, THAT FEAR IS THE MOST DEVASTATING OF ALL IN STRUMENTALITIES THAT POLITICAL CAMPAIGN 1 When such statements can bo side by side, what is any rational cal scene to conclude? WHAT comment can be made, MORE effective than the raising of both hands, a shaking of the head, and no comment at all! A ND until Mr. Richard Washburn Child, the apostle of sweet nesB and light in this campaign, who so bitterly excoriated J the Republican leaders, as "guilty of fabricated treason, playing shipwreck politics, advocating they dared to maintain that a gram at this time, would retard rather than hasten economic recovery, SPEAKS OUT AND ALSO DEPLORES THIS DEMOCRATIC PROPOGANDA can be drawn. When such a plea aids Roosevelt it is right and proper, when it aids President Hoover it is unworthy and WRONG !. And so the crazy snake dance goes onl Stand by Oregon "THHERE is a great difference, however, between what Gover- nor Meier said in his endorsement of President Hoover, and what the journalistio spokesman of Roosoveltism is and has been, saying in this neck of the woods. Governor Meier does NOT foretell calamity. He does NOT believe that the election of a president, any president, is going to spell this nation's ruin. He believes in this country, he believes it is too great, too Btrong, TOO SOUND AT HEART, to be destroyed or mined by any individual, or any political party. DUT lie DOES believe and this piyier absolutely agrees with him that conditions will improve MORE RAPIDLY under the leadership of Mr. Hoover, than "if we elect a guide who is going to take us no one knows where 1 Ho DOES beliovo, that changing pilots of the ship of state NOW, abandoning the Hoover period of four months, when one program has been repudiated, and no program will be available to take its place, will make economio conditions WORSE instead of hotter j RETARD re covery instead of ACCELERATING it. That is and has been the position of this newspaper EX ACTLY. We don't know how others feel about it, but we are Bick and tired of tliiB depression; we want business to return to some thing approaching normal JUST AS SOON AS IT CAN. We want nothing, no matter how small, to interfere with that recuperative process which unquestionably has started, and we are firmly convinced if President Hoover is retained WILL CONTINUE, unchecked and unabated. CERTAINLY no one cnn accuse Governor Meier of taking this stand as a Republican partisan. He left the Republi can party to run for Governor, as an independent, ho defeated the regular Republican nominee in a bitter and tempestuous campaign. Nor can anyone deny Governor Meier is a good business man, that he knows his state, and that only -as that state pros pers can his business prosper. In tho following statement, we believe Governor Meier sums up his position and tho position of the Republican party in this campaign, bettor and more oonviueingly than any other spokesman of that party has done: "As governor of Oregon, as one who haa pride in his native state, as one whose business Interests and financial investments are tied up with the prosperity of the Oregon livestock raiser, the Oregon grain farmer, the Oregon fruit raiser, the Oregon fisherman, the Oregon lumberman, the Oregon butter and cheese producer, the Oregon nut grower, the Oregon paper manufacturer and the WORKER DEPENDENT ON THESE In DUSTRIES, I don't want to take a chance on Roosevelt's tariff poltclea. The common tapeworm Is the beer . the personal supervision of your phy- tapeworm, called Tenlo saglnata. This parasite seldom causes serious trouble In the human host, tho In some Instances digest Ive d 1 s t urbance and simple ane mia may occur, The life cycle of the tapeworm Is passed as follows: The larva Is pres ent In the meat In little spots no larger than a rai sin seed. Such spots are called "measles," or cysttcercl, or bladder worms or hydatids all meaning the same thing, a watery vesclcle. Exam lned under magnification the "blad der worm" appears to be the head (not larger than the head of a pin) and neck of the tapeworm with a lit tle watery sac attached. The "measly" meat Is eaten raw or underdone (thorough cooking of the meat would kill the larvae) and in the stomach or Intestine of man the larva develops Into tho adult tape worm. The head Is equipped with no hooks such as some other tapeworms have, and hence It Is not difficult to expel the worm. The worm grows in links or segments, very small at the head end. Increasing in size, until they become flat oblong yellowish links as large as a pumpkin seed. The entire tapeworm may reach a length of many feet. Pieces consisting of one of several links or segments are occasionally discharged. The finding of these unmistakable segments or the finding of the tapeworm eggs by microscopical examination, la the only positive evidence that an individual has a tapeworm. Contrary to popular belief a tape worm does not rob Its human host of any appreciable amount of nourish- ment, nor does emaciation or weak ness of the host Indicate that he has tapeworm. Indeed, most persons who are found harboring tapeworm are too well nourished. Voracious appetite Is of course not at all suggestive of the presence of such a tapeworm. The eggs of the tapeworm dis charged from the Intestine of the host contaminate the ground or perhaps the feed or pasturage of cattle, or possibly their water supply. The mi croscopic eggs are Ingested by the cattle develop Into larvae In the stom ach of the animal and penetrate the stomach walls and lodge In the mus cles, also In the liver, heart and brains. Their presence seems to give the bovine host no trouble aa a rule. No treatment for tapeworm Infesta tion Is advisable or even safe without E AND POLICE Ml LONDON, Eng.. Oct. 37. (AP) Rioting unemployed, shouting defi ance at the police, participated today In the most serious disturbance of the kind that London has seen In years. Fifty thousand people wese massed In Hyde Park and at the several en trances as a column of several thou sand Jobless marched In for a dem onstration in protest against admin istration of the dole system. In great Cumberland palace, oppo site the marble aroh entrance on Edge ware road, a brick was thrown through the pos toff Ice window. Mounted police charged, swinging their clubs, and the mob fell back, cursing and booing. The police retired and the crowd swept in again among them. Time after time the horses pressed back the mob, withdrew, and the mob surged In again. Stones and mud whizzed past the policemen's heads. Several persons were injured and taken away in am bulances. This fighting took place over a 300-yard section along the bridle path from the marble arch westward. Meantime the throng Inside, which had been listening in an orderly manner to speeches from 50 soap-box orators, became menacing. Attracted by the affray at the mar ble arch, mobs began to gather in side the park railings. The mounted police extended their charges along Bayswater road as the crowds before and behind them grew more hostile. The rioters pulled branches from the trees and tore up the park rail ings as weapons. They threw any thing that came to hand. One mounted policeman was sepa rated from his galloping squad. His helmet was knocked off by a stone. There were women screaming among the rioters. Some of them fainted and were carried into stores. Dozens of windows were broken and as darkness fell there was no sign of a trues. While this was going on. a number of elderly gentlemen who lead their I dogs through Hyde Park every after noon were out as usual for their daily exercise. t PRINCETON. N. J. Such "measly" meat may occasion ally pass the regular government In spection In the great packing bouses, and probably not Infrequently gets Into the market In communities where locally produced beef Is sold directly to the retailer and the public without official inspection. However, it Is a minor matter, provided one makes it a rule to avoid eating under done or rare beef unless there Is ade quate assurance that the meat Is free from bladder worms. Beef kept In cold storage or In pickle for 21 days may be considered safe In any case, as bladder worms or cysticerci die within that time. Ql'ESTIONS AND ANSWERS, They're In the Breakers Now. (AP) The Republican tariff was described by Vice-President Curtis In an address last night as an Important protection for American farmera. The vice-president, seeking re-election, spoke before a capacity crowd In Memorial hall which seats 4,000 persons. Although the United States Is a largo exporter of wheat, Curtis said, It needs Republican protective tar iffs. "The Underwood tariff act, a Dem ocratic measure, permitted In 1831 the Importation of t9S.000.000 worth of wheat, most of It from Canada," he said. "When we Republicans regained control of the tariff, we enacted at first an emergency tariff act and then the McCumber-Fordney bill, and the Importation of wheat dropped 16.000.000 In spite of Canada's low prices. "Similarly, the Democrat were permitting a condition that brought us $13,000,000 worth of wheat flour, mostly Irom Canada. But after the Republican tariffs were operating, we find that only 37.382 worth came In In 1938." Curtis said the Democrats have been telling the wheat farmer that a h!g,h tariff has no benefits on sn exportable article where we can ship large amounts abroad." He also as serted that Qov. Franklin D. Roose velt, Democratic presidential nomi nee, favors a reduction In the sugar tariff that would "mean a real threat" to the sugar beet Industry In this country. roWERFl'l, FLEKT FAVORED IF ARMS PACT LIMIT FAILS (Continued noin Page One) it Justification for our Insistence upon equality for Germany." Communications Due to Newspapers. To the Editor: Despite the many differences of opinion and the difficulties between our two contemporary newspaper of Medford, the Medford Dally News and the Medford Mall Tribune, I feel that these differences In opinion on the local political situation have done far more good than harm. Of course I know what you are saving now as juu reug biiitb statement. Dut oeiorc I finish this article I hope to con vince you that this attitude Is cor rect. You may talk to 100 people right here in Medford and at least 05 of this number are vitally interested In the coming local election as well ns the national. Look at the enormous number of registered voters in Jack son county over 19,000. This fig ure represents the largest number cf voters ever to be registered In the political annals of this county Just stop and analyze this situa tion what does It mean? It means Just this: That the political Interest of the residents Is by far greater than ever before. Now you ask: Why are so many more voters registered this election year than ever before in Jackson county? why is every one In Jackson county vitally Inter ested in the local election more than ever before? I am going to answer these two questions, and I am sure that most of you thinking clrlzens will be In agreement with, try statement. I feel that . the Mwiford Dally News and the Mtdford Mall Tribune have been the muln factors In creating this great amount of Interest. If these two newspapers don't af fect the community I don't know what docs, fo if these papers were In agreemfnt probably most of the voters would agree. If this were true, that all of the people agreed on most things, there would be no need for elections or laws. I feel that you can readily see the way In which the county would progress II this were true. It has been through these two "sheets" that this Interest his been aroused among the voters which, after all. Is largely a factor In the progress of our county. So Instead of condemning and criticizing these two papers, I feel that they are worthy of a great deal of praise for having accomplished a fine piece of' work In imbuing into the minds of j the voters of Jackson county the j Importance of voting.
