IflH Thi Jackson County Chapter of the American National Red Cross will Inaugurate tie annual roll call dur ing the week of November 14. The purpose o f this campaign Is to raise the necessary funds for continu ance of the local chapter's relief work during the forthcoming stren- uous winter. A. li. Schafer, manager Pacific branch. American Red Cross, has Issued this statement: "The American Red Cross today faces a great emergency. Demands for Its services exceed those of auf period since the world war. For continued support of this program the Red Cross nufet turn to those millions of Americana devoted to service who are welling to make personal sacrifices. It has made no separate call for an unemployment relief fund to carry Its part of the load. It does, how ever, ask greater support this year through largely Increased member- ahlD everywhere." Alfred S. V. Carpenter, roll call chairman of Jackson county, says that the relief work of the county fqr this winter will depend solely on the generosity of the residents of the community as both the county court and the city of Medford state that there are no funds available to meet these needs. i Society and Clubs Edited by Eva Nealon 'AT Annual open house will be con ducted at the senior high school Fri day evening of this week, beginning at 7:30 o'clock, C. O. Smith, princi pal, announced this morning, urging all parents and mends of the school to be present. A 30-mlnute musical program will open the festivities for the evening and will include numbers by the high school orchestra and the boys' and girls' glee clubs. Following the musical program, which will be presented in the audi torium, the guests will tour the building. The high school Instruct ors will be presiding in their re spective rooms and parents will be able to contact all of them. The building will be open until 10 o'clock. - ' Open house has been held during previous years later In the season, but was arranged earlier this term to enable parents to develop a better understanding of student problems through an acquaintance wit,h the building and conferences with instructors. Past Matron's Party Lovely Tuesday Affair A large and lovely event of last evening was the dinner and bridge party sponsored by the Past Matrons' club here, fetelng the past matrons of Ashland. Covers were arrarcd for 46 guests In the small dining room at the Ma sonic temple, which was colorfully decorated in the Hallowe'en scheme. The tables also expressed the char acteristics of the approaching holi day. Miss Alice Hanley was chair man of the committee lor the even ing and community songs were led by Mrs. C. O. Larlson. adding a pleas ing feature to the dinner hour. There were 16 guests from Ashland present and 30 from Medford. Following dinner, all continued to the ladles' reception room, where bridge was played, with prizes going to Miss Georgia Coffey and Mrs. E D. Briggs. Central Point Orange To Give Hallowe'en Party. A Hallowe'en masquerade will be given by the Central Point Grange at the hall Saturday evening. October 29, beginning at 8 o'clock. The hall will be decorated in Hallowe'en colors and novelties. There will be witches, black cats and ghosts and a dusky gypsy maiden will tell fortunes. Home made dougnuts and elder will be served. There will be special features throughout the evening and prizes will be awarded the wearers of the most Interesting costumes. Music for dancing will be piayea by one of the valley's best known or chestras. There will also be cards for those who prefer them to dancing. Many Anticipate Rltrlne Party at Grants Pass G. R. Chapman of this city, poten tate of Hillah temple of the Shrtne, and Mrs. Sam Baker of Grants Pass, queen of Zuleima temple, will be host and hostess Thursday evening at the large party for Shriners and Daughters of the Nile to be held at the fair grounds pavilion at Grants Pass. Dancing will be followed by buffet supper and all Shriners, Daughters of the Nile and ' escorts are Invited to attend. A large delegation from Medford will attend the dance, which will be one of the large events of the au tumn season. PE! WASHINGTON. Oct. 26. (API Im mediate cash payment of the soldiers' bonus, the enactment of legislation granting pensions to widows and or phans of World War veterans and preservation of disability allowances were recommended to fresiaeni nuo- ver today by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The appeal, conveying actions taken at the 33rd national encampment of the organization in Sacramento, Calif., last September, was taken to the White House by Admiral Robert E. Coontss. U. S. N., retired, new commander-in-chief of the organization. It opposed cancellation of foreign debts, urged more strict enforcement of laws directing civil service prefer ence for veterans, and said recom mendations later would be- made for improving veteran rehabilitation and hospitalization. Reserve Officers To Meet Armory Tonite Reserve officers will meet at the armory this evening at 7:30 o'clock. Captain Marion O. Wright will be instructor for the evening and the subject will be "Solution of Map Problems." This subject covers: 30 series for AG. Air, Cav. CAC, Engr. FA. in fantry and signal corps: and 40 se ries for all medical, ord., GM and CWS. Formal Dancing Club Dance on Friday Calendar ' Many preliminary plans are being made for the next event of the For mal Dancing club, which will be held Friday evening at the Dreamland dance hall. Music for .dancing will be furnished by Ike Porter and his dance band and several dinner par ties will precede dancing. Following each affair of the dancing ciuo a great deal of entertaining Is done in 1 local society, adding increased fes tivity to the occasions. Kennedys Guests From Bay City Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kennedy of San Francisco are guests in Medford this week of Mrs. Jane Williams, who is spending the winter with the J. R. Woodfords. The group motored to Crater Jake this morning. Golden Link Class Will Not Meet Golden Link Bible class of the First Baptist church will not meet Thursday, as usual, due to the spec ial meetings being conducted at the church. However. Thursday evening is Golden Links' night at the meet ing, and all members are requested to attend. . Prop ram Presented KilRlr Point P.-T. A. EAGLE POINT P.-T. A. met at the school house October 21, with Mrs. G. E. Ousterhaut presiding. The program Included harmonica solo, David Hannaford; reading, John ny Woodrlch; vocal selections, the high school girls' quartet, Oladys Nlrhols. Beulah Ttngleaf, Hazel Smith and Eleanor Throckmorton: Mrs. Floyd V. Barrett gave a report, and Mrs. W. H. Young reported on 'The Home Medicine Chest" from "Child Welfare." Plans for serving hot lunches to the children during the winter will be made at the meeting at 3 p. m , November 10. Harvest Festival Opens This Evening Many folk will gather at the Cath olic Parish hall this evening for the harvest dinner and the festival, which will continue through tomorrow. Card playing tomorrow afternoon will begin at 3 o'clock. Pivot, auc tion and contract bridge and five hundred will be played. Lovely prizes will be awarded the winners In each.' The dinner thla evening will be served from 5 to 7:30 o'clock. The public Is cordially Invited to each event of the festival. Officers and nominees for city and county offices are especially Invited. Study Club To Meet Thursday The first meeting of the Study club of the Parent-Teacher associa tion, In the process of organization under direction of Mrs. 8. A. Kro- schel, wilt be held at her home, S30 West Fourth street, Thursday after noon at 3 o'clock. Mrs. Jack Heyland, president of the Parent -Teacher council, urges all members to attend. Pythian Sisters Entertain Thursday The Pythian Sisters are entertain ing tomorrow with a card party at the Knights of Pythias hall. Bridge and five hundred will be played and homemade prizes are promised hold ers of high scores. Refreshments will be served by the committee composed of Mrs. O. J. Wolf, Mrs. Chas. Fisher and Mrs. Ed Webber. There was a fine attendance and the I ceremonies performed in a manner J satisfactory to all. New members, In itiated were Floretta Anderson and Lillle Mottern. After the close of business season a social hour was enjoyed and refreshments were served. Festive Parly at "Y" Anticipated A very happy evening at the "Y" Is promised women and gins of Med ford Thursday when a party will be held under the leadership of Miss Laura Drury. A special program of music will be presented and Mrs. S. D. Nason will address the guests, choosing as her subject music ap preciation. Mrs. Nason is a splendid speaker and has a wonderful back ground in music from which to gath er Information of interest. The program will be followed by refreshments and a large attendance is anticipated, as each event recently arranged by the Y. W. C. A. has been well attended. KIWs Dance on Monday Evening Opening social event for the win ter season at the Elks' temple 'Will be next Monday evening, when a Hallowe'en dance will be given by the club. Music Is to be furnished by Ike Porter and his orchestra. The committee in charge of the affair Is Robert Strang, Charles Gil bert and Grover Corum. The dance la being given for Elks and their in vited guests, and tickets will be on sale previous to the affair, It was announced yesterday. v A number of dinner parties will precede the dance. Miss Carlton Hostess To Church Women CENTRAL POINT Miss Helen Carlton was hostess Wednesday after noon at her home on the Old Stage road to a group of 43 ladles from the Federated churches of Central Point. The main feature of the after noon's entertainment was an Illus trated lecture on the Tabernacle, given by Mrs. H. W. Davlason of Table Rock. A social hour was enjoyed and refreshment served by the committee In charge. V Reames Chapter Will Initiate Initiation will be conducted by Reames Chapter, O. E. Non-affiliated members will meet at the Masonic hall at 7:30 o'clock prior to the chapter session to make plans for the card party to be held November 3. 4-4 Missionary Society Of Jacksonville to Meet JACKSONVILLE The Missionary society of the Presbyterian church will meet Thursday afternoon at o'clock at the home of Mrs. I. A. Dew on the Jacksonville highway. Roll-call will be answered with items of interest on Alaska and India and the devotionala will be led by Mrs. George Backus. After the meet ing refreshments will be served. Guild to Carry Oh Relief Sewing Friday St. Mark's Guild will meet Friday at 1 o'clock to Join In the relief sew ing, which Is demanding the time of many society folk of the valley these days. Mrs. R.
