A gnu meeting of landowner! of Eagle Point Irrigation district wu held In the Grange hall October 20. Facte concerning the financial etatus of the district were brought to light In ehort talk by district officials. O. O. Bogga, president of the board of directors, gave a brief resume of conditions since his ' Incumbency, about six years ago. Figures presented In this discussion showed gradual pro gress toward rehabilitation of the dis trict. Outstanding warrants haw been reduced In a considerable amount; Improvements have been made In old laterals and new ones have been constructed; cost of de livering water has been reduced to less than one-third that of the high peak In 1935: over 4000 acres are tinder water, as compared with JOOO acres at that date. O. T. Davles, secretary, explained the bookkeeping system Inaugurated by the state auditor and in his talk said the books were open to Inspec tion at any time. State Engineer Strlcklln compared Eagle Point district with other Oregon districts, stating that this district had made a good showing during the past few years. R. T. Seaman, dis trict superintendent, urged a united effort by land owners to secure pay ment of taxes. He said that If taxes were paid In full, all outstanding warrants could be cancelled and the district would then be In shape to ask co-operation of bondholders In reorganisation, A recently circulated petition for the recall of the president of the board was discussed. In an opinion rendered some years ago by the attorney-general, he stated that the Irrigation district lawa did not pro vide for the recall of directors. The district election for one di rector will be held November at the Isabel ranch rouse, near Reese Creek school. TYPIST HELD FOR E IN WEIRD. DEATH HEA.TTMS, Oct. 34. (AP) The booting of Ool. William M. Inglls. noted World war veteran and one time candidate for United States sen ator, waa studied by authorities to day with the version given by a wo man who was In the apartment at the time and was critically wounded, conflicting, they said, with evidence they had discovered. The woman, who declared that she and Inglls had been married recently but who waa known to her associates as Miss Mary Nash and who had been employed as a stenographer by Inglls, was st a hospital todav with a bullot wound in her leg and abdomen. Her condition was "fair," hospital at tendants said, but ah was not out of danger. Rushed to the hospital after the tragedy was discovered Saturday night, when she put In an hyaterloal telephone call to the night switch board, operator, she pleaded "let me die I Ijet me dlel" on reviving some what yesterday, she declined to de scribe the affray until Attorney Ed gar a. Hadley,-s former close friend of Colonel Inglls' was summoned. "Bill had been drinking hard for a week," detectives quoted hes aa say ing, "and when we awakened Satur day morning he seemed to feel low. 1 cant go on this way,' he satd. "But he went on drinking and he bad that gun. I thought I had it hid den. But he found It." That evening, she said, be opened Are on her without warning, shooting twice, and then pressed the .38 call bre revolver against his head, and fell nfeleas on his bed. He was In his pa jamas and she in her street clothes, police said, when they broke into the apartment after being hurriedly sum moned - The woman's story, however, au thorities said, appeared to be In di rect conflict with her Interpretation of the evidence they found in the apartment. Miss Nash was questioned about abrasions on the knuckles ot her right hand, and said that they were not caused by a bruise but a burn, offi cers said. She insisted she had not quarreled with Inglls. A friend ot both Inglls and the wo man, Mrs. Leo. Casey, said that the two had been married but only their closest friends knew of it. Two years ago, Mrs. Casey declared, "his wite". had prevented a similar suicide at tempt, by disarming him. Was Nash, who Is 30 years old. a former Mills college and Belllngham normal girl, and Inglls had been liv ing together at the apartment for the past three yeara as man and wife. J. A. Mlkei, the apartment manager said. She had been employed as a stenographer In the government vet erans' employment service office which he headed. Colonel inglls, whose wife died three years ago, went overseas In command of the lolst Infantry, On his return he was a candidate for the republican nomination for United StAtes senator but was defeated. The former governor, who has called for complete victory for the democratic party Nov. 6, will apeak in detail on national Issues for the first time In the campaign. His exact subject has not been announced. At Savage Rapids dam, where need of a fish ladder on the highway side has been much discussed during the past several months, a rock wall has been constructed and a pool opened under the spillway so that until the gates are put in the dam, the fish will be able to make the trip up the river without difficulty. This will aid the salmon run In the spring and the steelhead and sllvcrsjde runs In the fall. Work on the ladder at Gold Ray Is also being done this week. On this side of the river a pool has been constructed and the rock above blast ed out to keep the water going over the ladder at all times. The ladder on the other side of the river has been rebuilt. (AP) A man believed to be Herschel Brown, of Seattle, a woman and a seven or eight year old girl were burned to death here last night when their car crashed Into the blinker light at the Puyallup river bridge on the Pacific highway and burst into flames. Such Identification as waa possible was made from papers wlch were not en tirely destroyed by the flames. The bodies were burned beyond Identifi cation. A small dog in the car was also burned to death. The car bore a California license and was listed to Herschel Brown, Acme White Lead and Color Works. Los Neltos, Los Angeles county. .
