PXGE TWO MEDFORD IVIHE TRIBUNE. BEDFORD, OREGON, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1932. Jubilant Cubs Invade Yankee Bailiwick; Series Opens Tomorrow' BUSH AND RUFFING LIKELY SERIES STARTERS FAVOR OF YANKS Bush Feeling Fine for Open Ing Mound Duty Ruth, Ruffing and Gomez Key to Yankee Success, Is View Br Ceyle Talbot, (Associated PreM flporta Writer.) HEW YORK, Sept. iTr-JJTr-The Chloo Cubs, Jubilant and ready tot the opening of the world aeries to- morrow, arrived In New Yor at 10 . m. thla morning, and were grsewa by a drlnllng rain, which threaten ed to Interfere with their plan of working out at the Yankee atadlum today. auy Busti, who la expected to be Manager Charlie Orlmm'e pitching election for the opener, had little to aay except that he waa feeling line and eager to face the Ysrmees. Rain la Threat. A light rain, which began falling early thla morning, not only threat.' ened to curtail tne praeuce 01 ra Cuba and Yanka but augured none too well for the opening game. The weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow held out little hope for Ideal playing oondltlona. It pre. dieted ahowera tonight and tomor row. with rlalng temperature. The big city pulsated with world series fever today aa tne cum, giam orou champion of the National lea gue, and the Yankees, the boye with thunder In their beta, prepared to fight It out In baseball's greatest spectacle In the Yankee atadlum, hard by the limpid Harlem. Odds May Be Silly. Keneaaw Mountain Landli, from a central location, smoothed cut the thousand and one detalla, gave "man agers and umpires final Instructions, And In the back rooms It went like this: "Yeh, they're offering 8 to S on those Yanks, but It dont mean a thing. Not a thing. Didn't they lay the same figures that the Athletics would take the Cardinals a year ago, and didn't this Pepper Martin make them all look silly?" That waa how matters stood: The approximate odds 8 to 6 In favor of the slugging Yankees, the prospect that there will be showers tomorrow and Thursday, and the majority of fans frankly akeptlcal of the dope that has established the American league champions top-heavy favor ite. See Small Crowds. About the only point upon which all agreed was that the big series Is not likely to break any attendance records. There has been a healthy, normal sale and there probably will be around 60.000 customers In Col onel Jacob Ruppert'a big ball yard when play starts at 1:30 p. m. to morrow, but the record of 83,000 set In 1938 probably will not be endan gered. - Most of the falllng-off In Yankee sentiment the last several daya la traceable directly to the doubtful condition of three of the club'a out atandlng performera, Babe Ruth, Charley Ruffing and Lefty Oomes. With those three "right," It would aeem logical to suppose the McCar thymen would take the Cuba in such a abort series where a couple of sure fire pitchers and an energetic home run hitter can carry the load. But nothing la logical with three men ,Uke that on the doubtful list. Phone 643. SWUNG STOPS Kearns Leaps Into Ring to Save Game Little Fighter Punishment Blows to Head Bring Max Victory By EDWARD J. NET! (Associated Press Sports Writer) NEW YORK, Sept. 37. (AP) The fight game, a bit frost bitten about the ears, gladly bundled up Its out door season paraphernalia today, left the heavyweight question for Max Schmeltng and Jack Sharkey to dis pute next summer, and aettled down to dlscusslona around the winter cracker barrel one of the most stirring and unusual heavyweight battles of modern history. Back to the middleweight division. by ' his own consent, went Mickey Walker, still claiming championship there, with the plaudlta of 80,000 of the faithful still ringing In his ears, as game a little fellow as ever stepped out of his class to take crushing de feat manfully until there was not another breath oi' resistance left in him. End Comes Quickly. Pot a while last night it seemed Walker waa to cap a glamorous cel'-er with a stunning upset vlotory, win the right to challenge Sharkey In Schmellng'a place. But in the eighth round the light ning In the black-browed Teuton struck Walker with full force. A right uppercut closed Mickey's left ere, blinded him. The crushing power in Schmellng's fists blasted Walker from one side of the ring to the other, floored him for counts of six and nine, left him rubber-legged, bleeding and helpless when the bell rang. Without waiting for Referee Jack Dennlng's Interference, Jack Kearns, Walker's mannger, leaped Into the ring and refused to let Mickey go further. Was Virions Battle. There waa nothing for Referee Jack Denning to do but award the decision to Bchmellng on a technical knockout. Although the bout actually ended In the minute rest between the eighth and ninth rounds, It will go down In ring history aa a technical knock out for Schmellng In the eighth. But apart from the almost confused and hysterical ending, there was ma terial for the cracker barrel boys In a battle that for seven rounds was as vicloua and aurprtslng ss any modern heavyweight hlatory knowa. Almost under the opening gun, Walker, pug-nosed little veteran scal ing but 17i4 pounds, bumped full Into Schmellng'a numbing right hand and waa floored for a count of alx and It aeemed aa though the chief entertainment of the evening woula be of the briefest kind. Walker Mokes Roily, But back from that Inauspicious start came a roaring Walker to fight his way through a numbing barrage In the second round and rally valor oualy with thumping left hooka to the body at the close. On through the third he came, gaining hla first advantage aa he etormed Into the complacent German, 'ripping away to the body at elose quarters, slipping under Schmellng's darting right hnnd. It seemed almost unbelievable that a little man, conceding 14 pounds In weight and every physical advantage. could atage the rally Walker did. He completely befuddled Schmeltng as ha pounded out a clear margin through the fourth and fifth rounds, almoat alnklng the aurprlsed German In the fifth with a left hook to the body that doubled Max and left him gaaping. Bchmellng took the offensive In the sixth and turned the battle hla way. He cut Mickey's lip with a right hand smash. Mickey aeemed tired. Again It aeemed aa though the end were coming. But there was one more grand rally left In the little Irishman to delight the 8178.000 worth of customers. With astonishing ease Mickey belted the former heavyweight champion about the ring In the aeventh, forcing him to cover, atlnglng him with body smashes, clouting his head with up percut and hooka. It gave him four of the first eeven rounds. It waa the last gasp, however, Card of Thanks.
