Mtueaa ociriow V Ye Smudge Pot By Arthur Perry After months of willful vindication and distortion of the Truth, conduct, ed with all the Satanic hstetulness of malignant minds, a bout between Righteousness and Evil Is announced for the coming fall and winter. Thle udden change of tune, and the leopard removing hla apota, la due to public revulsion to the recall plot, and the fact that It la no longer cute to throw mud In wholesale lota. No longer doee the aherlft alwaya arrest the wrong man, and the moon ahtner become a martyr: the county court la not engaged In a diabolical scheme to cut the aeat out of the taxpayers' pants: the treasurer la not hiding county funds, the gang la not figuring on burning up the fire de partment; the county clerk la not a acallawagette, the dlstTlct attorney l no longer possessor of a spiked tall, too mean for anything: and there la no conspiracy behind every pear tree and phone pole. Jackson county baa ahlmmled on lta foundations for the last time: there will be no bloodshed, "ehowdowna." and show-off. The Chamber -of Commerce Is a thing of Joy. and Its a good world, and a "great country" after all. The alnner announces his own re demption, .and there are angel wing feathers on his coat collar, when hail ed to Judgment. He never believed any of his own hooey, but Just as a matter of protection, and to make sure he la not kidding anybody with a spasm of holiness, a parole and sus pended sentence are In order. N . Several tillers of the soil around here, are mad about the price of hay. and have written back to Iowa, to get Information on how to go out and shoot a truck driver In the leg, and raise the price of farm produce. The Eugene News, editorially, wants to know, what has become of Wesley Barry, and other child prodigies of the films, "who In daya gone by pro ceeded to panlo the audiences and the producers." We haaten to Inform the benighted and esteemed Eugene News, that Wesley Barry, Is perpetrating what are called" comedlea, and they are a surer cause of aeaslckneaa than the Pacific ocean. A FAMILIAR YBI.P (Albany Democrat-Herald) This editorial asserts that wa are a liar, unfair and unprln clpaled and Incapable of gather ing facta and Interpreting them In the famoua state educational merger controversy. He saved the cost of a new auto, and the 1933-33 license, to expend It for physician's fees, hospital bills, and a permanent limp. The lull In the Lyathon was en Joyed by all, p The highway Is cluttered up with female hitch-hikers, more Insistent on being run over by passing auto tats, than the malea. They range In age, from 18 to 00 years. They have no Idea where they are going, and, what Is more give a whoop I What the country needs Is a stay-at-home campaign. The Roger Bluejaya, the Sarah Sparrowa, the Lucille Larks, and the Elmer Crows visited the Henry Wood pecker home yesterday. Henry and boya have just about completed the gathering of their winter aupply of nuts, and their popularity la un dlmmed and Increasing. The state treasurer was here for a apell yesterday, which he did not have, as he aald nothing about the 'subsidised press Everybody now has free electrlo lights. The subsidised press tried to keep the homes of the taxpayers In darkness, you may re member. The Oleemen chirped right mer rily on the cthae steps. Under the able arm-swinging of Jim Stevens, they all got through together. A ten or was caught alnglng through his nose with all his might. A Maw apprehended her offspring ateallng a peach Thura., and like Jackson county, he was shaken to his very foundation. The Jack. co. Democracy met this week, and voted to fight Republicans, for the next 03 days, instead of each other. A number from Ashland were present, and kept talking about the new postorrice, and It was hard for them to get their mind on the coun ty ticket. Editorial Correspondence ROCKFORD, 111., Aug. 28. A perfectly inexcusable error on the part of Bome editorial writer on the Portland Oregon ian has resulted in a barrage of protests from ex-Rockfordites, living on the Pacific coast, which have been forwarded to the present writer, causing him even more embarrassment than amusement. ' Shortly after our arrival here we made a trip to our old camping ground 55 miles away at a lcke in Wisconsin, and were shocked by the changes in the past 30 years, which have transformed a quiet sylvan, . far-from-the-madden-ing-crowd retreat, into a cheap, noisy sort of mid-west Coney Island. We mentioned the rows of Mammy shacks, hot dog stands, and a quaint little English ii.n changed into an Al Capcne night club. The description was perfectly correct, as apply ing to that lake, but for some incxplainable reason the Ore gonian scribe applied the item to Rockford an l naturally the outburst from former Forest City boys and girls followed. We have written the Orcgon ian, pointing out the error, and asking for a correction, which we trust will reach the eyes of the "protcstants" but having been in the newspaper business some 29 years, -we realize the harm that has been done can not bo entirely undone. It was just "one of those things," that sometimes happen in news paper offices, adequate punish ment for which is not suffered in tli is world, but some good people believe, will bo suffered in another. The incident certainly shows the publicity dynamite that lies even in an obscure item, in a small city newspaper, when it touches LOCAL PRIDE. Throwing "asporagrass" on the old homo town, hits' all home towners where they live, and they reach for pen and paper, as promptly as startled gunmen reach for their auto matics. No sooner will the Rockford barrage die down, than the members of the Lake Improvement club will unlim ber their Coronas and get after the horso thief and journalistic blackguard, that traduced the fair name of their up-to-date and undefiled summer resort. Thank Heaven Al Capone is in duress vile, or ho would order out his sawed-off shotgun squad. But fortunately before the Improvement olub can function, the present writer, unless present plans go hay wire, will be safely out of range. But regardless of that the verdict STANDS I Incidentally the Oregonian editorial tried to find an amus ing inconsistency in the fact that the writer deplored the evidences of a too modern civi lization in Rockford as a result of its rapid growth ; and at the same time welcomed similar rapid growth on the Pacific coast which would boom Med ford real estate values, and make the center of this coun try's population around Boise, Idaho, instead of somewhere in Indiana. The point we think was a feeble -one, even had the de scription applied to Rockford which it did' not, but with the description applying to a Wis consin lake and the article re ferred to that lake only, THERE WAS NO POINT AT ALL. ; For while we welcome growth in our cities, we don't welcome growth and the En croachments of a crass and noisy civilization along our fa vorite fishing streams. We can certainly make our favorite editorial writer on the Oregonian Ben Lampman understand this, and if occa sion demands, join in our de fense. , If Ben should return to Gold Hill, and hie himself to some quiet mountain stream, where he smoked his pipe, fried his bacon, and yanked the festive trout from the water in his youthful days, and be forced to wind his way through Mammy shacks, hot dog stands, dash board radios and jazz orches tras, he would, we feel sure, not take kindly to the transforma tion, nor write the nearest Chamber of Commerce, con gratulating them upon such striking evidences of growth and progress. The Prospect Improvement club might be pleased, but he wouldn't be.' The time may come when the lonely fisherman, and the undisturbed nimrod may dis appear from our untailored wilderness, here in southern Oregon, as the "barefoot boy with his can of worms" has from this lake in Wisconsin. But when that time COMES we feci sure there are boys in Jackson county now, who re turning there, will feel much as did the present writer, when after 30 years he returned to the little lake in the woods down by Uncle Dan's mill. And if he happens to, be writing for a newspaper, he will probably express himself much as we did, and no doubt suffer, from the outraged Humdingers in corporated and the Boosters Limited, a similar fate 1 R. W. R. Be correctly corseted by STHELWYN B, HOFFMANN'S eutn ft Holly street Today By Arthur Brisbane When Darkness Lasts Forever, Digestion and Genius, Oysters Return, Poor Little Yak. It Died, Copyright King Features Synd., Inc. Light was gradually shut off from tho earth, darkness, over a narrow belt of land, lasted a minute and a half, everybody was impressed. Some day our sun will die, and darkness will come over the earth to last, forever, or until the earth breaks up, to be reassembled elsewhere billions of years later. And nobody takes that seri ously. We have little imagina tion, only today, tomorrow and yesterday interest us, No more eclipse here, until November, when a dark donkey will shut out a shining elephant or vice versa. In Europe there is a sudden eclipse of hope for peaceful agreement about armaments, and such things. Germany unexpectedly demands the right to build up a great army, "for protection" of course, and France la groatly agitated. French etatesmanshlp surely could not ex pect the Germans to endure forever, helplessness snd humiliation The French did not do so after 1370 and Sedan. f It Is Importsnt for you to know that good digestion and swift diges tion are Important to evolution, which la another word for progress. Dr. C. M. Yong tells the British Association for the Advancement of Science about it. Low form of animal Ufa and hu man life have little hope of mental Improvement, because getting their food and digesting It takes nearly all their time. The higher races ot car because their food has been quickly ntvorous men hare rule the world, procured and digested, leaving leis ure for thinking and planning. That interests vegetarians especial ly. The time and energy they waste, extracting nourishment from veget ables, robs them of mental oppor tunity. millions of years changing rock Into This Is how It works. Nature spends soli. Earth worms chew the soil and make It fertile. Grass grows slowly. The cow eats the grasa and apends two to four years producing a beet steak. Man rata the beef steak and digests all In an hour and has 33 hours of the day for "higher evolution." Personal Health Service By William Brady, U. Bunion is an Internal derange ment or deformity of the foot and la as Irremovable as Is congenital dis location of the hip. It is futile to apply a reme dy to the bunion and hope It- will bring about a cure. " The deformity consists In a de viation of the great toe out ward toward the other toes, and this unnatural position intlme produces partial dis location at the metatarso-phalangeal Joint, with thickening or enlarge ment of. the head of the metatarsal bone and chrbnic Inflammation of the bursa pad over the Joint. In some cases this bursa becomes Infected and suppurates. Footwear that crowds the forefoot and forces the great toe out of its Natural straight position causes bunion. The special faults to be avoided are pointed soles, short shoes, and shoes nasrower across the "ball of the foot than the barefoot Is when bearing the weight of the body. An affection formerly taught but now regarded as ridiculous, that Is, toeing out, probably contributed to ward the development of bunion. Anyhow It Is always best to toe In, If anything, at least to avoid toeing out in any circumstance Toeing out fa vors not only bunjon but pronation of the feet and falling of the arch. The soreness or pain of bunion may be relieved by painting the swelling with tincture of lodln, but this should not be repeated In less than week or more. When there Is a lighting up of the Inflammation ap ply large compresses or thick folds of gauze (cheesecloth) and keep these compresses moistened constantly with witch hazel, alcohol or cologne water, all night. Nothing but a radical operation will cure bunion. Usually the bursa Is removed and a portion of the en larged head of the metatarsal bone Is trimmed off, the dislocation reduced, and the foot placed in a suitable splint for two weeks. Such an op eration does not affect the patient's gait unless to Improve it. One Just training for bunion should become a crank about shoesthat Is, Insist on selecting the last you want and do not permit the shoe salesman to Influence your choice. The last , you need has straight In side lines and reasonably wide round ed soles. Lines lengthwise bisecting sole and heel should meet at an angle. The Idea Is to favor toeing In. The leas heel the better for the foot. If heels are worn, the wider the better. However, the girl who gives her dogs a break by wearing sensible shoes ordinarily may step out tn the freakiest of French heels on occasions. . Every one should go barefoot or with only soft pliable foot coverings at every opportunity. When walking, running, or playing around barefoot It Is always benefi cial to the feet to practice toeing In. For protection uppers may be ne cessary, but it la best for the feet of child or adult to avoid all binding or support of the feet by footwear. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, Yeah But. In every society meeting I have at tended In the past two years (writes a medical colleague) X have heard electro -surgery diathermy ex tolled as the method of choice In malignancies (cancer). If this Is so, why do we still have a few who op pose diathermy for the removal of tonsils? The answer is simple they are too lazy to learn the technic or too hard up to Install the necessary apparatus. Answer Yeah, and perhaps some of them still read the diatribes emit ted by our would-be medical Musso lini, in whose mind the diathermy method is not yet "accepted" or something. Bromldrosls. Eighteen years ago I cured my bromldrosis (foul sweating) of the feet by saturating the feet with glyc- Some of Sapho's most beautiful lines tell of the evening hour that brings back the sheep and the goats, brings back the child to Its mother. Another pleasant hour Is the begin ning of September, that brings back the Blue Point and the Cape Cod and all the other oysters, Including the giants harvested near Baltimore. William H. Raye, who finds out about oysters for the General Foods Corporation, supplies . Information that makes the humble oyster seem more important than the dlnossaur. The oyster crop of twenty million bushels is worth eighteen million dol lars, employing many thousands of mobile, corn, wheat and oil, tn that men. The oyster is unlike the auto there has never been an oyster over production. Modern quick-freezing methods make fresh oysters available all year round, and their food value Is very great. California has oysters the size of your thumb nail. France and Eng land eat oysters that taste of copper, excellent when you are used to 1em. They say the first man that swal lowed an oyster was brave. The man who does not eat them now Is foolish. Sad to announce that baby yak, born during the eclipse and named "Eclipse" by It's keepers. Is dead. It lived only one night. The keepers say it was feeble -at birth. They do not think the name or the eclipse had anything to do with It's short ness of life. J. B. S. Haldane, able British scientist, says the perfect man can never exist. There must be different kinds of men, each "the best" in his own way. An oyster could not have imagined a caveman, a caveman could not have imagined the pilot of an airplane. Mr. Haldane, with all his intelligence, could not Imagine the perfect man. who would be balanced man. That perfect man, possessing In one brain all the knowledge available on earth, would an absolute sense of Justice, may some day exist. According to scientists, his head will be nearly a perfect sphere, very little of the circumference wasted on eyes, ears, nose, swallowing apparatus the part we call "a face." "It hath not yet been shown what w shall be," prediction are futile. Th perfect man would probably seem to y dull. The nearly perfect man, you mrei him occasionally, is dull enough. Time, with Its dsyllght and dark ness, can be used tn many ways. At Wnltefleld, New Hampshire, thieves robbed hotel guests when the sun was hidden, everybody watching the eclipse. At th same time, Captain Stevens, for th National Geographical society, was watching, In the sun's corona, an outburst of flame. 884.000 miles In height, about equal to the diameter of th sun. In that burst of flame, our earth would seem Ilk a tennis ball, and melt like a snow flake In a blast furnace. Professor Brooks' of the Blue Hill meteorological observatory; recorded a seven degree drop in temperature when the sun ceased pouring its bro ken down atoms in our direction. And W. C. Weller, of Belmont, Mass., ob served that mosquitoes swarmed into activity when the sun vanished..
