MEDFORP MAIL TRIBUTE, MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1932. PAGE SEVEN 4 TRAIf G.0.P.0L0 Veterans of Capital Hill Face Bitter Battles to Re tain Posts is Forecast for November Election Br HERBERT FLUMMER WASHINGTON As battle plapa for the November election shape up, it becomes evident that some of the men who nave almost become Insti tutions on capltol bill because of their long service face bitter fights to retain their posts. And If the democrats fulfill their own predictions It will be a mourn ful day for the republicans on the senate side of the hill next March 4. No less a person than Senator Moses, republican of New Hampshire, has admitted the possibility of a demo cratic senate after that date. Repub lican control now hangs by the slen derest margin, the party division ie lng 48 republicans, 47 democrats and one farmer-labor. Even the slightest shift In the political winds might bring about a complete shake-up In the organization of that body. Old Guard 'On Spot' The democrats are out a-gunnlng. There are a half-dozen senators at least the very backbone of the Old Guard whom they have definitely put "on the spot." One is Reed Smoot of Utah, the oldest senator of them all In point of service. Continuously since 1003 the tall Utahan has clung to Is eat. It the democrats could "bag" Smoot In the fall there would Indeed be rejoicing In that camp. An apostte of the doctrine of high tariffs, con servative In all of his political be liefs, Smoot hss theories of govern ment differing from most democrats. Then there's Jim Watson of In diana, the republican leader of the senate. Much as they like the Indl- anan personally, much as they would miss his back-slapping and Incessant handshaking, his defeat probably would be considered In much the same way as that of Smoot. He, too, Is one of the Old Guard has been since he first came 1o congress as a member of the house back In 1894. He has been and Is regular of regulars In all his poll ileal thinking. The slow-moving, slow-thinking Wesley Jones of Washington Is an other the democrats are shooting at. Chairman of the appropriations com mittee, he yields to no one In his party regularity. There Are Others "The tall Sycamore from Connec ticut" Hiram Bingham la another. Democrats haven't forgotten how he tried to put them "on the spot" for their prohibition plank after the Chi cago convention. The sharp-tongued, wisecracking Moses is still another. Serious "Sammy" Shortrldge of California Is also, as are the Preal dent's good friends, Glenn of Il linois; the bald, bespectacled Oddle of Nevada, and Stelwer of Oregon. Democrats would chortle to see any of them fall by the wayside. 1 Otto Passes 'Cum Laude LOUVAIN, Belgium (API Arch duke Otto, claimant to the throne of Hungary, has won a licentiate In po litical and social science after three years' study at the University of Lou- vein. (As sociated Press Photo) NO MUSEUM FOR MIT DECLARES IE' HOLLYWOOD Lee Duncan Is sentimental fellow who lent asham ed of It. When his dog Rln-Tln-Tln died. Duncan received numerous wires and letters offering money for the prlvl lege of preserving the canine movie star for museum .purpose. Some peo ple might have taken the highest bid, but not Duncan. "No," he said, Rlnty was my pal. I owe him all I have. Be was always close to me, and now that he's gone I want to keep him with me let him rest." So "Rlnty" Is burled In the back garden of Duncan's home, where the tall bronzed man with graying hair lives with his mother. The grave is unmarked, except by a white rose bush. Duncan, who "educated" Rln-Tln-Tln, and many other dogs Including "Rlnty, Jr.," who will carry on the name In pictures, always directed the dog star, even after talkies complica ted things. But the microphone did not change his methods of direction. In every Rln-Tln-Tln talkie, Dun can spoke his commands to his pet as usual, but his voice was not heard In the picture because by accurate timing It was kept from the sound track a matter of "tuning out" by switching a dial In the control room. If anyone has the notion that a man can take a dog and let the dog work for him, as Duncan seems to have done, he would be disillusioned by watching the real work the dog's master does, "Rlnty" did the work, but Duncan worked twice as hard, with endless patience and kindness. Duncan isn't strong for "dressing up" and "going out in society." He prefers overalls and staying home. It's one secret of his success with dogs he plsys with them. African Iron To Japan DURBAN, S. L TO GAM ARMY Silent Giant' of Japan's Military Off to Manchuria As Emperor's Representa tiveWill Rule Vast Area By GLENN BABB TOKYO (AP) The "silent giant" of the Japanese army, General Nobu yoshl, has gone to Manchuria as the emperor's all-powerful representative In that region. His silence is literal, a by-word In the army, but "giant" refers to hts professional standing, rather than his physical stature. By decision of the government and with the emperor's own sanction, all Japanese agencies In what the em-' plre's diplomats would have the world believe Is the Independent state of Manchoukuo. have been consolidated. Military, diplomatic and admlnlstra-, tlve functions have thus been concen trated in the person of the stoical Muto. Wields Big Powers His post at Changchun, capital of the new state, probably is without parallel In the world today. It car ries all-embracing control over the destinies of an alien land and 30, 000,000 alien people. Alongside the shadowy sovereignty of Henry Pu-Yi, former boy emperor of China and now chief executive of Manchoukuo, the general stands as embodiment of Japan's might snd as actual ruler of Manchuria and por tions of Mongolia. He Is commander of the Japanese Congratulations Jackson County! I congratulate the people of Jackson County upon their courage In building a fine new courthouse at this time. . , Not only did their action help re lieve the unemployment situa tion but was a sound financial move at this time. He resigned then, assuming tech nical responsibility for eleven army cadets wbo aided the assassination M former Premier Tsuyoshl Inukat and the series of bombings that terror ized Tokyo May 15. There was considerable popular feeling against the terrorists at that time and the army had to supply a "goat." But that the role was only temporary is indicated by Muto's re turn to high office. The powerful clique of younger officers now dominant In the army consider Muto as one of the sblest exponents of their ambitions to spread the glory of Japanese arms on the continent. CORVALIXS.
