The three filed out silently. Tbe ethers, Luccl, Mallory, Martin, Battles and Hamilton, were still tending nervously In the ball, guarded by the armed and vigilant Mueller. The cripple locked the bedroom door, then wheeled about and faced the others. ! "Gentlemen," he announced curt ly, "someone ha Just murdered Mr. Williams. Jerry tensed his muscle In antici pation of a sudden clash. Luccl glanced at Mallory who, now cold sober, roturned tb look meaningly. The flyer was amazed to note that for tbe moment, at least these two were allies, not enemies. He saw Mallory'a heavy form gather Itself for a spring. Luccl, too, stood on the balls ot his feet his bands opening and shutting. Ashwood backed awlftly against the wall, his gun pointing at Luccl'a midriff. Mueller's automatic covered Alallory. Tbe outside guard moved close to the gangster, patting him deftly In search for a weapon. The gangster' malevolent eyes glanced at the armed men, then he relaxed and submitted docilely to tbe search. Mallory, too, waa swift ly examined. Jorry could see tine beads of perspiration upon the tur bulent stockbroker's brow as, by sheer force of will, the man gained control ot himself. "Stevens." said Ashwood, at last, "I wonder If you would accompany met" "Sure," replied the detective.
