HKe all the other aultatora of the times, try lng to capitalise dlstrew to their own profit. The veteran at the capital represent a mere handful of the two million who eaw service ovoreeae, ana the other two million who were ready to battle In Europe. Squeamish soula need not tr't about a reilutlon. U d be, the veterans can tend to the revolutlonlsta themselves. And there la another nuisance that will be abated, towlt: cheap attacks on the government by mental incompetents seeking publicity lor tnemseivea ana endeavoring to Incite and Inflame the unthinking by their clownish ravings. Heretofore this type has not been re garded as worth Jail room. The Washington, D. c, incident, nowover, will result In the firm hand and the flying hoof being applied to the gen try, Mr. Pace, the Detroit red, will sooner or later pace a prison cell. Then his Imitators there Is at least one In every townwill slink Into their holes, and come out only to quote Scripture, and try to look In telligent. General Bmedley Butler must feel proud of his recent orator ical horse-play, e Mrs. Wealthy left yesterday for the Olympics, and will return by way of the California beaches, Agua oauonto, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone park, nd the Canadian Rockies. She Is too poor to buy an Oregon auto license. By the time she gets back, It will be winter, and will only use the car dur ing the short period before ahe leaves lor Hawaii. If her United Tin Can Holdings go to B65 per, ahe will feel inclined to be rich enough to buy a . 1934 license. Another year overtook Dub Watson Wed. Tempo fuglt, said he, as the race or the nest mllepost on the race (or eternity got underway, There are any number of mighty sermons wrapped up In the Olympla, Wash, dispatch reciting that a tailor died of malnutrition (slow starva tion), with 038.000 In the bank. It was a case of suicidal greed, and a horrible example of substituting the Dollar for Qod. In all his miserable life, he probably never knew a happy moment. He sold his soul for gold, and none not even himself ever benefited In the slightest. The final decree of Fate was fitting, and there Is no appeal. BARD WINTER SKINS ' (Albany nemocrat-lleraia) If the atatement of the state wide committee on unemploy ment that Oregon will have ap proximately 300,000 unemployed persons and their families to care for this winter be true, the con clusion must be that the com mittee expects almost everybody to be out of a Job. Oregon's pop ulation hardly 'exceeds one mil lion. It we figure four depen dents for every uuemployed per son, we account for the entire population. ... Gregory (Hoot Bay) Campbell was downtown again yesterday, showing his two front teeth, and fasclnatlmv the womenfolks. When he gets about IV, he aura will make feminine h'.gh achcool hearts go pltty-pat. "I see no hope before 3223." said he. "'fnere Is no use talking about Bants Claus being around the corner. I favor locking up everything an. raising ben, and getting It over with." The threshing macnlr. Is again heard In the valley. T.ie wheat the farmers were not golr.g to get any. thing for, la headed towards t per DU. t JUST LIKE Ol'R OWN (Abilene, Kan., Reflector) This primary campaign Is run ning smoothly. The candidates have treatrd each other with great consideration. About all the charr.es against candidates that have come to this office In the mass of publicity are such little things as highway robOry, mayhem, arson and general cus sednMS, e e This state apparently escaped the grasshopper and special session of the leyislaturs menace. The watermelon kings have started retting for fear their watermelons will be embezzled, by veil-behaved youths. The melon (not Andy) men are at the mercy of the elements, as shotgun shell Is worth mora than the watermelon. Editorial Correspondence OVERLAND LIMITED, EN ROUTE EAST, July 27 A day in San Francisco demonstrated what a difference a few thou sand Shriners make! These men from all parts of the country had come to have a good time and San Francisco seconded the motion with both hands. As a result the depres sion was completely forotten, in fact as far as San Francisco was concerned it had ceased to exist. The hotel barber just given a fat tip by a fat Shriner from Dallas, Texas, who ordered "the works," hair cut, shave, facial massage, shampoo, mani cure and shoe shine typified the prevailing spirit. "Like old times" quoth he as he adjusted the neck towel with a flourish "busy all day, everybody good natured, no grousing, no penny-pinching wish these boys would stick around a month, all our trou bles would be forgotten." Outside, on a 'lexaco sound producing truck, a rich bari tone voice came tripping thru space, hitting the office build ings, echoing back, filling the atmosphere of Union Square. "Happy days are HERE again ! The skies above are CLEAR again!" And they were. Everyone was happy. The Los Angeles temple put on a marvellous drill in front of the St. Francis, the nobles on horseback the horses as one woman in the crowd expressed it "sewed in along the hip line" in other words an integral part of the costume. The riders were dressed as Arabian shieks, and as they galloped up and down the street, their head scarfs flowing behind them, the illu sion of a cavalry charge was perfect. The crowd went wild with delight. Selecting San Francisco for the convention this year was certainly a master stroke. For no oity in the world, with the possible exception of Paris, could so quickly and spontane ously throw off its cares aod woes, and respond to the carni val spirit. No one who was in Sen Franoisco following the earthquake (Beg pardon, the big fire) will ever forget the Today By Arthur Brbibane The Maddest, Merriest. Money? Plenty of it, Three Churches Struck Earth's Gold Supply, Copyright King Features Synd.. Ino. Yesterday in Wall Street was "of all the glad new year, mother, the maddest, merriest day." Stocks were bounding up lik'j the wild chamois look iug for a high peak. The poor stewing brokers sold nearly three million shares of stock, und plus signs were as numer ous as wrinkles on the bears' foreheads. Will it lastt Why drag that Inl Washington wanted to sell $650,000,000 long term treasury notes, some paying two and a half, some three and a half per cent. One issue was subscribed for twelve times. The govern ment could have had five thou sand, five hundred and six mil lions, instead of six hundred and fifty millions, almost ten times what it needed. Tu shows that there Is money In the country. Our banks, more heav ily loaded with cash than ever before, don't know where to use their surplus money. But that doesn't mean anything for prosperity. Then Is much water In the Oreat Lakes. But If It stayed there. It would do no good. The sun raises part of It, scatters It In rain, That helps crops. The rest of It foes over Niagara rails and produces power. That helps gallant and carefree spirit, in which the people accepted that major catastrophe. That's the way they want to accept the economic catastrophe. The Shriners gave them the chance. The only evidence of hard times were the ferry boats be tween Oakland and San Fran cisco. Went over during the morning and came back during the ovening rush hours or what USED TO BE the rush hours 9 a. m, and 5 p. m. The boats were only half full. The check room man at the Oak land pier explained it. "So many out of work, com muters cut down 50 per cent. My business off more than that." No wonder S. P. earnings continue to drop. The Shrine convention aside, however, there appears to be a better spirit abroad, judg ing by the trip thus far. On the Shasta, a Berkeley business man returning from New York via the Canadian Pacific said: "They are feeling much bet ter in the East." Last night talked with a S. F. dry goods buyer en route to Chicago and New York. "I may be kidding myself but things do look better. My boss is almost optimistic. We are cleaned out and must re stock others are in the same boat. Can't go on a buyers' strike forever. Seems to me the worst is over, and we've really started to climb back again." One thing sure adversity has bucked up the old S. P. The "Overland" never so spick and span, service never better, din ing car included. All the em ployees on their toes to. accom modate and please. "It's an ill wind," etc., etc. Skimming over the Nevada desert now warm but not hot, no dust and of course no cin ders. Says the middle aged woman reading Vanity Fain "I do hate cinders we will be getting them after tonight." But that's TONIGHT. We are only five miles from the Salt Lake cut-off now. R. W. R. publlo ownership In Canada, and pri vate ownership on the American aide. If the water stayed In the flutes, refusing to be lifted by the sun's rays for rain and refusing to go over Niagara Falls for power, it wouldn't be useful. That's the condition of dur vast cash resources, now, when money does not circulate. Natures laws work Inexorably; no favoritism shown In these days of few miracles. On Wednesday, light ning damaged three churches In New Tork, Including a fine church on Riverside drive built with the assist ance of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. A big block of limestone, dislodged, carried an Intereetlng gargoyle down with It. Religious people once believed that lightning, threatening comets, eclipses of sun and moon, tornadoes, plagues were always ordered by the Lord to do some definite thing. But when fire destroyed Ban Francisco, wiping out many churches. It was observed that Houkhtallng's great whiskey dis tillery stood uninjured. And In a western town where the public hall stood next door but one to a saloon, with a church between them, Inger soil spoke In the hall. The day after the church had burned down, truck by lightning. Ingersoll made humorous use of that In an agnostlo letter saying, "Sombeody seems to be a bad hot.' The Intelligent man. In auoh an In cident, sen and respects the fact that laws made by eternal power are themselves eternal, unchanging. United States Geological Survey sees no prospect of any more big gold finds In the United States. The earth has been thoroughly searched for gold." Russia and Canada may possibly hold Immense nc deposits. However, gold, because of Its specific gravity, tends to sink deeper and deeper Into the earth, and resists the action of water that would bring It down from mountain tope, directing men toward the mother lode. The amount of gold hitherto developed Is probably ea nothing compared with earth's resl supply. If science could find a way to recover all the1 gold Personal Health Seirvice By William Brady, M. D. Ad dress Dr. William Brady In care o! The Mali Tribune, HOW DO YOU LIKE T One of the last and beat things I suggested to stock the family medi cine supboard with, Is Old Doc Salve. And I coniessea this line salve was no Invention of mine. It was the gift of a drug drummer, one of those manufac turer's salesmen who canvass the practicing phy sicians regularly In the .Interest of supply houses. When X think of all the hokum such agents have handed me and I was moderately hard bolJed In this respect, as young doctors go well, I'm glad this old veteran of the road Included In my order a sample of Old Doo Salve. That Isn't the name the drug manu facturing house gave It: It Is my name. I think the people who first compounded the salve called It lypto Hne, probably because It contains eucalytol. They called It an ''ozon ized ointment," whatever that may mean, and offered It as deodorant, disinfectant, antiseptic, non-lrrltant and stimulant, for burns, scalds, eczema, wounds, ulcers, etc. Here Is the formula: Zinc Stearate 4. Zinc Oxide Boric Acid 0.5 Benzoic Acid - , .. 0 5 Zinc Peroxide 3. Aromatic oils , sufficient Special base , quantity At any rate that was the formula, or as much of It as the manu facturer consented to give out for publication. But you can't make satisfactory salve with such a tricky formula or recipe. So I had to work out a practicable formula or recipe which any druggist can prepare to order, and this la what I call Old Doc Sal7e: Zinc Oxide 30 grains Boric Acid 20 grains Benzoin 10 grains Oil of Rosemary ...... 5 drops Lanolin SIX DRAMS Petrolatum, enough to make ..... ONE OUNCE Notice my recipe omits zinc stear ate (which is not essential where zinc oxide is an IngTedlent) and In cludes rosemary and benzoin as aro matlcs. One might Incorporate a few drops of oil of eucalyptus, I suppose, but I believe that would change merely the grand total odor of the salve. One ingredient In the supply house recipe and not In mine la zlno per oxide. If the neighborhood drug gist has this or can obtain It, the addition of 10 or 30 grains to the ounce of salve might Improve the formula. Zlno peroxide Is a powder which, like the familiar hydrogen peroxide solution, liberates oxygen floating around In the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, gold would be cheaper than silver and when some future Rockefeller Invests the necessary thirty or forty million dollars to dig a hole toward the earth's center, tap ping the Inexhaustible heat and pow er, that enterprise may bring fresh knowledge about geld deposit. Uncle Sam should send kind re gards to Sir Atul Chatterjee, who leads India's delegation In the Ot tawa conference. Sir Atul sayp he and the rest of India won't "buy ev erything Inside the British empire" and BUY ' NOTHING FROM THE UNITED STATES. India now buys and sell in the outside world now one thousand five hundred million dollars' worth of products, 70 per cent outside the British empire, and does not Intend to Jeopardize trade with the United States. The .government has discovered "communist" plot to injure bank credits by a whispering campaign. It should be, but Is not generally known, that aaylng, doing or Insinu ating anything to Injure a bank's credit Is a criminal offense. However, government and bankers should make sure that the "reds" are really the "wjiisperers." Reds, as a rule, like something that explodes wltfc ft bang. They are not whisperers by nature. Some unscru pulous person short of stocks might be interested In promoting lack of confidence in banks. Some things said about the reds remind you of Sir Boyle Roche's re mark In the house of commons: 'l smell a rat; I see It floating in the air, but, sir, X will nip it In the bud." Unpleasant situation In Washing ton; veterans seeking payment of their bonus at the capltol, resorted to violence after being evicted from a building on Pennsylvania avenue. They pursued the police for some distance throwing bricks. Hard times have not entirely weakened the vet erans physically. That was proved by one huge negro veteran. It took six policemen to put hlra In ft patrol wagon, Chlle'a arrangement for tending ni trates to Europe, -the nitrate cartel" la called by Mr. Oarvan, head of the Chemical Foundation, Inc., "equiva lent to ft military alliance1 between Chile and Europe, for It "taxes the efficiency of our national defeuse and the protection of our agrlcul ture. The opinion la doubtla sound But instead of weeping about U Unci HE ODOR OF SALVET when It comes In contact with blood or organic secretions, with consider able ebullition or foaming. The salve Is most conveniently, economically and aseptlcally put up and dispensed from a collapsible tube, tho It may be kept In tin boxes or glass jars. It Is difficult or Impossible to keep any salve or ointment sterile (uncontamlnatcd with germs) after an ordinary box or Jar has been opened for use of the salve; on the other hand it Is difficult to contaminate the con tents of a collapsible tube. The concern that prepared the ointment lyptollne for physicians declined to provide It. for the laity. That Is another reason why I have worked out a practicable formula for Old Doo Salve. Keep a tube of It In your emer gency kit and use It for burns, cuts, sores, bee stings, mosquito bites, sunburn, or wherever you crave a salve whose soothing Influence is not confined to Its odor. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. - Buttermilk. I am 16 years old and have a kind of pimply rash and blackheads. I have been told to drink a pint or buttermilk every day and It will clear up my blood. D. J. Answer Buttermilk Is a wholesome beverage If you like It. I don't think It cures anything. Send a stamped envelope bearing your address and ask for Instructions for the treat ment of your trouble. Alas, the Poor Nurses. As I am about to marry tv nurse I am Interested In your views about the adequacy of the two-year course of training for nurses Instead of the three years they are required to take In most hospitals. Have you seen this report about the movement among hospital managers In the northwest to make the course five years?- C. W. J. Answer No. So far as Z know. Dr. Mayo and I are still In favor of the two-year course of hospital training for nurses. If the Idea Is to make specialists, or maybe little tin doc tors to serve In Industrial plants, department stores, etc., postgradu ate course In the special fields should be provided. The third year in the nurse training course is Just a little scheme whereby the hospital gets a full year of expert nursing service at the pay of a chamber maid. Raw Milk for Children's Teeth. Where can I find Information on the experiments on the effect of certified milk on children's teeth? Mrs. M. H. A. Answer I do not know. In Eng land It has been found that chil dren who receive raw milk have less decay of teeth than children In similar environment who receive only pasteurized milk or dried or canned milk.
