OVERLAND LIMITED, EN
ROUTE EAST, July 27 A day
in San Francisco demonstrated
what a difference a few thou
sand Shriners make!
These men from all parts of
the country had come to have
a good time and San Francisco
seconded the motion with both
hands. As a result the depres
sion was completely forotten,
in fact as far as San Francisco
was concerned it had ceased to
exist.
The hotel barber just given
a fat tip by a fat Shriner from
Dallas, Texas, who ordered
"the works," hair cut, shave,
facial massage, shampoo, mani
cure and shoe shine typified
the prevailing spirit.
"Like old times" quoth he
as he adjusted the neck towel
with a flourish "busy all day,
everybody good natured, no
grousing, no penny-pinching
wish these boys would stick
around a month, all our trou
bles would be forgotten."
Outside, on a 'lexaco sound
producing truck, a rich bari
tone voice came tripping thru
space, hitting the office build
ings, echoing back, filling the
atmosphere of Union Square.
"Happy days are HERE
again ! The skies above are
CLEAR again!"
And they were. Everyone
was happy. The Los Angeles
temple put on a marvellous
drill in front of the St. Francis,
the nobles on horseback the
horses as one woman in the
crowd expressed it "sewed in
along the hip line" in other
words an integral part of the
costume. The riders were
dressed as Arabian shieks, and
as they galloped up and down
the street, their head scarfs
flowing behind them, the illu
sion of a cavalry charge was
perfect. The crowd went wild
with delight.
Selecting San Francisco for
the convention this year was
certainly a master stroke. For
no oity in the world, with the
possible exception of Paris,
could so quickly and spontane
ously throw off its cares aod
woes, and respond to the carni
val spirit. No one who was in

Yesterday in Wall Street was
"of all the glad new year,
mother, the maddest, merriest
day." Stocks were bounding
up lik'j the wild chamois look

stewing brokers sold nearly
three million shares of stock,
und plus signs were as numer

Inl
Washington wanted to sell
$650,000,000 long term treasury
notes, some paying two and a
half, some three and a half per
cent. One issue was subscribed
for twelve times. The govern
ment could have had five thou
sand, five hundred and six mil
lions, instead of six hundred
and fifty millions, almost ten
times what it needed.
Tu shows that there Is money In
the country. Our banks, more heav
ily loaded with cash than ever before,
don't know where to use their surplus
money.
But that doesn't mean anything
for prosperity. Then Is much water
In the Oreat Lakes. But If It stayed
there. It would do no good. The
sun raises part of It, scatters It In
rain, That helps crops.
The rest of It foes over Niagara

gallant and carefree spirit, in
which the people accepted that
major catastrophe. That's the
way they want to accept the
economic catastrophe. The
Shriners gave them the chance.
The only evidence of hard
times were the ferry boats be
tween Oakland and San Fran
cisco. Went over during the
morning and came back during
the ovening rush hours or
what USED TO BE the rush
hours 9 a. m, and 5 p. m. The
boats were only half full. The
check room man at the Oak
land pier explained it.
"So many out of work, com
muters cut down 50 per cent.
My business off more than
that."
No wonder S. P. earnings
continue to drop.
The Shrine convention aside,
however, there appears to be
a better spirit abroad, judg
ing by the trip thus far.
On the Shasta, a Berkeley
business man returning from
New York via the Canadian
Pacific said:
"They are feeling much bet

Last night talked with a S.

Chicago and New York.
"I may be kidding myself
but things do look better. My
boss is almost optimistic. We
are cleaned out and must re
stock others are in the same
boat. Can't go on a buyers'
strike forever. Seems to me
the worst is over, and we've
really started to climb back
again."
One thing sure adversity
has bucked up the old S. P. The
"Overland" never so spick and

If the water stayed In the flutes,

That's the condition of dur vast
cash resources, now, when money does

Natures laws work Inexorably; no

A big block of limestone, dislodged,

Religious people once believed that
lightning, threatening comets, eclipses

that Houkhtallng's great whiskey dis
tillery stood uninjured. And In a
western town where the public hall
stood next door but one to a saloon,
with a church between them, Inger

HOW DO YOU LIKE T
One of the last and beat things
I suggested to stock the family medi
cine supboard with, Is Old Doc Salve.
And I coniessea
this line salve
was no Invention
of mine. It was
the gift of a drug
drummer, one of
those manufac
turer's salesmen
who canvass the
practicing phy
sicians regularly
In the .Interest of
supply houses.
When X think of
all the hokum such agents have
handed me and I was moderately
hard bolJed In this respect, as young
doctors go well, I'm glad this old
veteran of the road Included In my
order a sample of Old Doo Salve.
That Isn't the name the drug manu
facturing house gave It: It Is my
name. I think the people who first
compounded the salve called It lypto
Hne, probably because It contains
eucalytol. They called It an ''ozon
ized ointment," whatever that may
mean, and offered It as deodorant,
disinfectant, antiseptic, non-lrrltant
and stimulant, for burns, scalds,
eczema, wounds, ulcers, etc. Here
Is the formula:
Zinc Stearate 4.
Zinc Oxide
Boric Acid 0.5

Zinc Peroxide 3.

, quantity
At any rate that was the formula,
or as much of It as the manu
facturer consented to give out for
publication. But you can't make
satisfactory salve with such a
tricky formula or recipe. So I had
to work out a practicable formula
or recipe which any druggist can
prepare to order, and this la what
I call Old Doc Sal7e:
Zinc Oxide 30 grains
Boric Acid 20 grains
Benzoin 10 grains
Oil of Rosemary ...... 5 drops
Lanolin SIX DRAMS
Petrolatum, enough to
make ..... ONE OUNCE
Notice my recipe omits zinc stear
ate (which is not essential where
zinc oxide is an IngTedlent) and In
cludes rosemary and benzoin as aro
matlcs. One might Incorporate a
few drops of oil of eucalyptus, I
suppose, but I believe that would
change merely the grand total odor
of the salve.
One ingredient In the supply house
recipe and not In mine la zlno per
oxide. If the neighborhood drug
gist has this or can obtain It, the
addition of 10 or 30 grains to the
ounce of salve might Improve the
formula. Zlno peroxide Is a powder

"communist" plot to injure bank

It should be, but Is not generally
known, that aaylng, doing or Insinu

However, government and bankers
should make sure that the "reds" are
really the "wjiisperers."
Reds, as a rule, like something that

Some things said about the reds

The salve Is most conveniently,
economically and aseptlcally put up

or Impossible to keep any salve or

the salve; on the other hand it Is
difficult to contaminate the con

another reason why I have worked
