I love this young man and I also know he lovea me. The only thing we disagree on la his mustache. Now Nancy Lee, don't tell me this shouldn't make any differ enoe In my love toward hm. Don't you think If he really cared for ma aa he aaya ha does he would take It off? CURLY. . It la noted that another young man, described aa "a trifle head strong" slew his mother, when she declined to give him enough money to buy a dance ticket. A strong desire to step off a walta Is not much of an excuse for murder, but Is better than no excuse at all. The young man now realltea "tha serlouenesa of his offense," with the dreary prospect that hla next dancing W1U be at the end of a rope. No doubt If paroled,' he would not attend any more dances, arid not commit murder again unless his .father, refused to contribute funds to attend the movies or play a game of pool. . There will be plenty of time to read later, for the polls don't close until 8 o'clock. Above all don't fall back on the slacker's alibi that one vote won't make any difference anyway. One vote makes all the difference in the world as far aa you are concerned. It is the difference between doing your duty as a good citizen and not doing it. Moreover elections have been, decided by one vote in the past, as the Oregonian pointed out a few weeks ago. At the last city election, a change of only 16 votes would have changed the result. . In all probability the final outcome in many local contests will be decided by the voting the last half hour. Don't throw your vote away. Make it count. It may be the one your can didate needs. All voters are "gods in their own right" on election day. Don't neglect that right. Exercise it! Scum of the Earth! WHILE those responsible for the kidnapping and death of the Lindbergh baby must be placed on the lowest scale of human depravity, we don't believe those not responsible, but willing to capitalize on the grief and heartbreak of the parents, can be placed much higher. The kidnapers at least displayed a certain sort of bestial courage took a terrific risk their diabolical designs. These chislers-in like Means and Curtis were willing to profit by such inhuman and conscieuceless depravity, but took no serious risks at all. If the plan worked, they drew down their easy money. If it ' failed they were not much worse off than they were before. This is all wrong. Not only should the penalty for kidnap ping be raised, but those who conspire either to obstruct justice in such a case, or profit financially by it, should be classed : morally and legally, with the kidnappers themselves. Then and Now TTHERE was also a depression in 1907 a very serious raone A tary crisis. President Roosevelt was in the White House at that time. This is what he wrote to his friend Hamland Garland about it: The White Rous, Washington, November 33, 1007. "Dear Oarland: "Thank you for your letter. When hard tlmea come, It la Inevitable that the President under whtm they come should be blamed. There are foolish people who supported me because we had heavy crops; and there are foolish people who now , oppose me because extravagant apeculatlona complicated here and there with dishonesty have produced tha inevitable re--actions. "It la just the kind of Incident upon which one must count. It may produce a temporary set-back for my pollclea In either one or two ways: that la in securing aa my successor ot a re actionary, or of some good man who will be the tool of reaction aries; or else through having the pendulum swing with violence the other way, so that my auccessor aa a wild radical will bring utter discredit on the reforme by attempting too much." REPRESSIONS By Alice Judson reale Usually it Is possible to make a child stop doing what we do not like. We have only to punish severely enough, disapprove heavily' enough to make him give up .hla dearest sat isfaction. But what other results does this method hsve? .... The Instinctive wish, the expres sion of which waa thus drastically cut off, still exists. Thst it is strong is evidenced by the very fact that It requires such stern measures to stop its further expression. ' A tremendous amount of psyenio energy is required further to keep It. In .check. The energy thus tied up la not available for use In other directions. Col, Lindbergh Will Stay The Senate Says No Beer Parrots And Sheep Fat, Copyright Ring Features Synd, Inc. Merchants sincerely interest ed in public welfare think the sales tax would be harmful. Have they considered the dif ference between a reasonable sales tax and an unreasonable tax on incomes, big and little in their effect on business? Our tariff, which is nothing but a sales tax, runs up to fifty or sixty per cent and more. Excessive income tax knocks down the purchasing power of the public. A four per cent sales tax like that in Canada would supply income that the country must have, four billions of dollars a year without hurt ing anybody. Some of our good congress men suggest that the right idea is to "soak the rich" but the rich have strangely disappear ed, and with few exceptions, are no longer here to be soaked. It la suggested that Colonel Llnd- berg will move from this country to remain abroad, where the kidnaping Industry does not exist. He would be Justified In taking auch action but "quitting" 1 not a part of the Lindbergh equipment. He will prefer to stay and fight It out with his fellow citizens. The first part of that fight ought to put In Jail those that sought te profit by Colonel Llndbergh'a great misfortune, deceiving him with ly ing, criminal statements. The senate, 81 'to 34, reject legal beer containing 3.75 per cent alcohol, In spite of the plea that It would produce great Income.. Twelve Dem ocrats and 13 Republicans voted for beer, 81 against It. Immediately thereafter, It waa overwhelmnglly voted to tax heavily tne "makings" of home brew and home made wine. although the home brew la not tit to drink, home made wine Is lmper- feot, and both are much atronger than 3.78 per cent In alcohol. Emerson said: "Consistency is the bugbear that frightens little minds." It doesn't frighten congress, nor does Inconsistency frighten the lawmak ers. You know those' parrot-like birds that lived peaceably on Insects until sheep were brought to. Australia, then the blrda ate the Insects on the sheep. In 1933, IS34 were arrested for counterfeiting, a new record. Mr. Moran saya depression hss hit boot legging profits and bootleggers have entered the counterfeiting field. Bootlegging, hi-Jacking, racketeer ing, counterfeiting, kidnaping are profitable. Senator Borah warna congressmen that if they adjourn for the political conventions, without having settled "the relief program," " thst would be sn act ot poltroonery" and would bring Into existence a third party. Dr. Bachem, professor of biophy sics, says the routine of industrial mass production does not satisfy our "biological requirements," and must end. Neverthelesa mass production and routine will continue. Without those things a 700 automobile would cost 3000. It wouldn't offend anybody's "bio logical requirements" to work five or six hours a day, five days a week, in mass production, each spending the feat of life according to hla or her psychological and biological re quirements. And the five or six hours a day and five days a week will come eventually. Civilization will have to choose between repeated revolutions and an adjustment of human labor to mechanical efficiency. Labor conditions change. In the time of Henry the Second of Eng land. If an Idle workman left hla own parish to seek work elsewhere. without permission, he was branded with a red hot Iron. THE MANAGEMENT OF CATARACT This is the second of a series of talks about cataract, but I want readers to understand clearly that 2 have no rem edy or method of treatment to offer. I sm giv ing this general Information about cataract because many correspon dents have asked for It and because It will do no body harm to have . his mis conceptions of such a condition corrected. I am aware that people who do know what everyone ought to know about cataract probably do not trouble to write and ask questions. It la the people who do not known or who have been misinformed who write to me. But then, the purpose of this column la not to tell people things they already know, but rather to tell 'em whether the things they know ara so. Sometimes It makes 'em pretty mad when they learn that something they know about health or Illness Is not so and when they get mad they, can be pretty nasty about It. On the other hand, when they learn that , something they known Is so sometimes they become quite elated . about It and even mention the matter to somebody or other. True to our Hlppokfatlc. oath we skip lightly over the symptoms of cataract, hesitating for an Instant to say that In most Instances there Is some slow Impairment of vision ' for near work which reading glasses somehow fall to correct. The oc ulists with much experience say that Improper glasses can do much to create changes within the eye which manifest themselves as cat aracts later. ' I am merely a phy sician, not an oculist, and I give It as my Impression that they refer particularly to the fitting of glasses for people under middle age, and most particularly to children with near-sightedness. We older folk may do as well or better with the vision tests of the optometrist or optician, but the younger ones generally re quire the aid of drops for an ac curate examination and hence they should go to the eye physician (oculist) only. When cataract Is diagnosed, be sides the careful correction of re fraction with proper glasses, it Is well to Inquire Into the general living habits or hygiene of the patient. The amount of close work must be limited. The Illumination of the work Is particularly Import ant. Indeed, one sees ruinous light ing and repellant glare everywhere In business life. One wonders how much eyestrain and ill temper la ingle Razor just as economical, as tne other. Electricity will Light J Pen The California Oregon Pover Company due to this extravagant Illumina tion. It is a ffood habit to Interrupt the close work frequently for half an hour or more, to rest the eyes. For that matter, It Is a tine habit for anybody who does close work to look up and away to whatever dis tant view there may be, every lit tle while, for Just a moment. Throw back the head to do this I said look up. This tends to counteract, in a measure, the 111 consequences of prolonged work with the eyes dependent, looking down, and act ually elongated In the anterior-posterior axis. One with beginning cataract should take dally walks of from five blocks to six miles, depending on general strength. . Smoked or dark glasses should be worn only when there is act ual dazzling by sunlight. I think this is true In any case, whether of cataract or just Imaginary eye strain. - I do not know whether any char latans at present claim to have a remedy which "absorbs" or clears up cataract. Certainly this Is not possible. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS As the Lady Remarked Lunch of a male Insurance clerk consisted of two Items and nothing else, viz., one-half pint of sour cream and four oranges.
