Among the high crimes and misde meanors that have been noted, to ny extent. Is the dlsbollral horn- woKgllng of an offlceseeker by auTer, . 7. he revealed he had no vote. Is to TJ OW quickly we forget. Eleven years ago there wag a de- A pression in this country- but few of us remember it. And a political complex similar to the present one was created, only it was against the Democrats instead of the Republicans. Congress then, as now, was milling about, viewing with alarm, and in the senate there was a perfect avalanche of stump speeches, declaring what was the. matter with the country and what must be done about it. Vice President Marshall then presided over the senate. After listening to these harangues for several months, he arose in his seat after a particularly angry tirade, and quietly remarked: "Now gentlemen. I am going to tall you what thii nation really needs. Moat ol all It need, good S-cent cigar I" There was a moment of silence and then a roar of applause and laughter. That remark swept the country, and the entire country laughed. It broke the tension, it cleared the atmos phere. And from that time on until the end of his term, no senator- Republican or Democrat arose in his seat to tell Vice President Marshall what was wrong with the oountry. TT7ITH the primary over, and the usual lucid interval before the presidential campaign, about to begin, we suggest that what the country needs and particularly this section of it, is not so much a good five-cent cigar as a good joke, something to tickle the community diaphram, and give the people a chance to forget their troubles in spontaneous mirth. We have the highest authority for this belief. To quote one of the most eminent physicians and psychiatrists in the country : ' "In eases of mental and Imaginary diseases nothing hu greater therapeutlo value than a whooping big laugh." But what is there to laugh about someone may inquire! Well, we admit not much. Times are hard. The circumambient gloom is pretty, thick. But during the past few weeks, the present writer has gotten several good laughs out of this down-with-the-gang" talk, and nly continue it we believe the "0R a very eminent American once remarked- you "can fool T ,, . .... . .1 1 1, t all the people some of the time, some of the -people all ot the t;me tut y0 c n-t fooj au the people aU the time." Truth ' ' 1 may be crushed to earth, but it never fails to rise again. This "down with the gang" talk hag been going on here abouts, for nearly twenty years, and we admit it has fooled many peope, But you can't TIME. And the people of Jackson County, NO MATTER HOW TOMORROW'S PRIMARY COMES OUT, are not going to , . , swallow this gang whangdoodle bait, hook and sinker any LONGER ' TPIIEY are going to call for a show down. They are going A to domand the members of this gang which has destroyed law and order in this supposedly peaceful and self-respecting community; which has robbed the people, sanctioned murder, and made our courts and judges a laughing stock, BE NAMED that the charges against them be clearly stated, and the truth or falsity of these gang charges be determined once and for all, not by the politicians nor the newspapers but in THE PROPER WAY, in the Anglo-Saxon way BEFORE OUR COURTS AND OUR GRAND JURIES. And when that is done Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy I if the people of Medford and Jaokson County don't get a laugh, then Lydia Pinkham never sold a pill I That laugh will be so loud and raucous, that no amount of table thumping, no amount of coyote howling, no amount of insinuating, no amount of misrepresentation- is going to be able to withstand it. AND if it is NOT done, if the "gang howlors" try to side ton trils oil OTO.nivn m tliav litva ttiAia liw Ailai-lnl? our courts are corrupt, our juries are corrupt, our judges are corrupt, justice cannot be attained in Jackson County, then unless we ae greatly mistaken) there will be another laugh. For if this charge against the people of Jackson County is true, then there is only one course to pursue, i. e. INSTRUCT CAPTAIN TENGWALD TO CALL OUT THE NATIONAL GUARD! For when civil law can't be sustained, it is the sworn duty of the Governor of a state- in which such lawlessness and disorder reigns to declare martial law. MARTIAL LAW FOR MEDFORD AND JACKSON COUN TY, BECAUSE OF THE MEDFORD AND JACKSON COUNTY GANG I Now we submit in all seriousness, could the national laugh caused by Vice President Marshall's 5-ccnt cigar, hold a candle to the laugh caused in Southern Oregon by thatt Our Last Word KTOW one last word, and this IS serious. ' Why has the Mail Tribune spent so much time this cam paign "calling" this "down with the gang" foolishness? For this reason and this reason alone : We are in the midst of a serious depression, we face a critical econoniio situation, we need AS WE HAVE NEVER NEEDED BEFORE, HON EST, COMPETENT AND RELIABLE MEN IN PUBLIC OFFICE. This gang talk has been used in the past, and this year, solely and exclusively to confuse the votors- to raise a smoke screen behind which unqualified and incompetent men may, on a tido of prejudice, hatred and passion, slip into important offices, behind which the real and only important issue may be hidden, namely the issuo between GOOD GOVERNMENT AND BAD GOVERNMENT! That's all! That's why we have demanded a show-down on this gang talk, so that the people might see what it really IS. That's why we have insisted so constantly that the people study the candidates for themselves, disregard this camouflage on the part of self-interested office seekers, go straight to the core of the thing, and select those candidates they believe to be the best qualified for the positions they seek, from the stand point of CHARACTER AND ABILITY. , , , CO on that note with which we started this campaign, we also end. Go to the polls tomorrow and vote for those men yon regard as the BEST MEN- the most reliable men, the most cap ablo men, regardless of which party they belong to, regardles of everything and anything, except your duty as a citizen t" ,he 1JKST GOVERNMENT IN JACKSON COUNTY THAT CAN BE OBTAINED. In the emergency or first aid treat ment of poison ing It is the part of good com mon sense to give enough of whatever antidote you do give. The 'name of the poison of diphtheria la to in. The name of the antidote we use for such poi soning is antitoxin. There are from 200,000,000 to 300, 000,000 red blood corpuscles in a single drop of blood. Bo we need not get excited over the loss ot a few hundred thousand red blood corpuscles, need we? Not long ago a member of my household came down with a sore throat. The patient had been ex posed to diphtheria. The attend ing physician took a culture, but we did not wait for the laboratory report. We Just gave the patient 30,000 units of antitoxin. Next morning patient was getting weU and report was negative. Shucks, we had spent the price of the anti toxin to no purpose. But we were not regretful. Anyway we all slept soundly that night. Only the Ignorant and supersti tious imagine there Is any risk In volved In administering antitoxin. True, any such serum may cause hives or similar discomfort, and In rare cases It may cause an asthmatic seizure, even a fatal one. But this latter possibility is easily guarded against by administering only a wee drop of the serum first and waiting an hour to see whether the patient la sensitized. If the emergency Is not too urgent. If no disagree able reaction occurs within aa hour. then the full dose may be Injected without fear of unpleasant conse quences. If It Is worth while to give anti toxin at all It Is the part of com mon sense to give enough In the Il3 CoriihjerL GxLlinq Ufhorth. w-'dL fe.iv-eA. LpJteufA. Grower success in securing better control with fewer sprays with S-W Arsenate of Lead is due to several factors: HIGHER DEPOSIT. These hang-overs of paralysis that followed diphtheria In so many cases 20 or 30 years ago were almost Invariably due to too small doses of antitoxin. If any was given at all. The Inadequate doses left con siderable diphtheria toxin or poison un-neutralized, and the toxin or poison of the disease, not the anti dote, caused the paralysis. Ten thousand units of antitoxin Is a trifling dose. Such a dose la comparable with 10,000 red blood corpuscles, which would scarcely make a smear visible to the naked eye. Of course, if you could Inject the picayune ten thousand units in the first 10 minutes of the Illness you might neutralize all the toxin then in the blood, at that. But If you let the production of toxin go on for eight, 12 or 24 hours, then you had better begin with 30 to 60 thousand units, and If the diphtheria Is moderately severe you are still only" trifling If you give anything less than one hundred thousand units. In Russia they find that In very severe diphtheria doses of from 200. 000 to 300.000 units of antitoxin, much larger than has heretofore been used, the mortality rate la decreased more than half. In any case no harm can be done If we give more than enough. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. Barley Water. In diluting baby's food with bar ley water or oatmeal water, please tell me how to make this. Mrs. L, O. Answer To two tables poonfuls of either barley grain (pearl barley) or barley flour add one, quart of water and a pinch of salt and boil or simmer for four or five hours, adding water as needed to keep quantity up to a quart. Then strain through coarse muslin. ' To make oatmeal water use the same method, with rolled oats or ordinary oatmeal. Barley water Is less laxative than oatmeal water.
