Stat Headquarters EUGENE, OREGON TO START F E (Continued from page one) Records L'ninarred At the same time this action saved the navy man from having their sar vloa records marred by Imprisonment. Captain Ward Wort man, Maasle's commander, aatd federal action would have bean necessary to clear their recorda hd they actually been com mitted to prison, oven for an hour. Captain Wort man said Masile, Jones and Lord would retain their status in the navy. The commutation, however, did not constitute a pardon and did not re store to the four their civil rights. Attorney General Hewitt said, but Olarenoa P arrow, veteran chief of de fense counsel, said be thought "fed eral action might be taken to restore them. We are satisfied." Outright Pardon ought Hewitt aatd he had not determined whether they could be pardoned by the president but added that aucn action would be "an extraordinary procedure." A move for an outright pardon was begun by a group of citi zens. In commuting the sentence Gov ernor Judd announced he had acted upon the petition of the four defend ant and their counsel asking execu tive clemency. The governor also made public a petition bearing the names of 104 members of congress asking for an unconditional pardon for the four. The name of Repre sentative Th a toner of Kentucky, Maasle'a native state, headed the alg-naturea. May Drop Charges The four persona were convicted last Friday after a long trial climaxed by Massle's testimony that he shot Kahahawal last January upon bear ing the native confess participating with four other men In a criminal assault upon tola wife, Mrs. Thalia Massle. The commutation probably means that Mrs. Portcacue, mother of the attack victim, and the three navy men will leave Hawaii, and that the four remaining men awaiting retrial on Mrs. Maasle'a charges probably will not be called to face a jury again on that count. Massle Thinks of Mother "My only comment Is," aatd Massle, "that I wish 1 could be In Kentucky to see the smile on my mother's face when ahe learn 1 am free." "I'd like to tell my friends back on the mainland," said Mrs. Fortescue, "that I thank them all for what they did for me, especially those who made ia possible lor Mr. Darrow to come out here. " am thrilled and very happy," said Mrs. Massle. Darrow, who In his 75th year came out of retirement to defend the four, aald ha waa "greatly gratified." Hawaiian Resentful Opinions expressed by a few lead ing citizens reflected the belief that the commutation waa the best way out of a difficult situation. The Im mediate reaction of the Hawatlans, however, waa one of resentment. Prlnceaa David Kawananokoa, Re publican national committee woman for Hawaii, aald; 'The atmosphere haa been so per meated with 'laxity of conditions and strict law enforcement' for the past few months that belief that Justice could only be served by strict adher ence to law has become a part of our dally existence. "With thla commutation, the ver dict of a Jury composed of men of Intelligence, sound judgment and a good character with the facta and law before them, becomes a farce, and the truth as brought out by the prosecution becomes a travesty." 10 VISIT LOCAL LODGE Oregon Rebekah' wishing cup will rlslt Olive lodge Mo. 28 of Medford Monday evening, May IS, according to the plans announced by I. ' M lle rTk i Saw 'aSaV IKU wr in lira you" One of the two main reasons why more people ride on Goodyear Tires than on any other kind has always been safety. Other tire-makers know this. They know it so well that in their natural eagerness for sales they are tempted to claim safety too. But there's a long jump between claiming safety on paper and building it into rubber. ' Ridges, grooves, knobs on the side of a tire may be ornamental, but they're about as useful as the buttons on a coat sleeve. If YOU want grip instead of slip in the tire you buy, there's just one place to look for it. Look at the center of the tread, where it contacts the road.
