Broker, wum.iw. iaaea by now Bridge CaDUut Works, j I DM 0I&A1 Tyl ASSOCtAON Wake Up, Mr. and Mrs. Voter! TIIE biggest business in Jackson County is, Jackson County. It is bigger than our banks, our lumber mills, our largest department stores. It is a $36,000,000 corporation, in which every resident is a stockholder. . , .In a few weeks now these stockholders will be called upon to select the department executives in this corporation which they own. There are a record-breaking number of applicants, men and women, old and young, experienced and inexperienced. Obviously it is 'to the personal interest of these stockholders to select the most capable and trustworthy executives that this community affords. In other words, the people of Jackson County, as stockhold ers in this corporation, should go about the selection of their future employees, in precisely the same way they would go about it, if they were selecting employees in their own private business. For Jackson County is or should be just as im portant to them, as is their own private business. And that is what five weeks, before the primary, we are asking them to do. That and nothing more. ITtfHAT does that meant Well, it means a number of things. First and foremost it means, starting now to look over these various applicants, and finding out about them. You would do that in your private business, wouldn't you, Mr.-and-Mrs.-Voter t If there were many vacancies to fill, and many applicants for each vacancy, you, wouldn't wait until a day or two before the date your selection had to be made to find out something about them? OF COURSE you wouldn't. You would get busy at once, and find out all you could about each applicant, weigh one against another, so that as far as is humnnly possible, your final selection would fall upon the ONE best fitted for the job. IN this process, furthermore, you wouldn't take the applicant's , OWN word for his or her qualifications. In fact vou i would subject the loud-mouthed, rather a closer scrutiny than j one, for you would know big j together. ! You would also be sceptical I case, solely upon impugning the j cants, throwing the slime of abuse, villification and slander, in every direction like some enraged deep-sea squid. For naturally j you would conclude that there must be something wrong about a man, whose only plea for consideration, lies in slinging mud j at his competitors. . I In other words you would disregard all the "noise and fury j muviiiiiK , jruu wuuiu iuouuuui an iMuuiloeo unsup ported by performance j you would pay no attention to gossip and scandal, bandied about without evidence, you would brush all that sort of hooey away, and ' Considering this problem of matter of who should or shouldn't you would go about the solution WAY. IF that is what you would do in anything improper in asking publio business not perhaps with but with the same general attitude We think not. And yet that county, and we don't believe it county in this country. And we don't believe it will be done at least to any great extent this year. AND THAT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IS WHY IN THIS LAND OF THE FREE AND . THE HOME OF THE BRAVE, GOVERNMENT PARTICULARLY LOCAL GOV ERNMENTIS SO GENERALLY UNSATISFACTORY. OETWEEN elections we curse out our publio officials, com plain about ignornnce here, waste and extravagance there, incompetence all around, and then at election time we proceed to liston to the ear tickling buncombe of the demagogue and four-flusher, the sob sister and the no'er-do-wcll, flock to the polls and put people in publio office, we don't know anything about, and care less, many times people to whom, if we spent five minutes in careful inquiry, we wouldn't entrust our garbage collecting. ' And even more amazing and stupid, when government does fail in some particular, we the voters, always blame some one else, when we have no one but ourselves to blame. TTHE wonder here in Medford and Jackson County is NOT that our local government has been so bad, but that all things considered it has been so GOOD. All in all, year after year, we have been extremoly fortunate, both in the honesty and efficiency, of our city and county governments. But luck like that can't Inst forever. And we greatly fear, that with the hordo of candidates for practically all publio offices, it won't last through the coming year. Unless Well, UNLESS, the people of Jackson County start now and look up the records and qualifications of the various candidates for themselves merely adopt the same attitude toward their publio business affairs, that as good business men and women they would adopt in their private business affairs. That's all. But in this democratic government of ours, it's just about EVERYTHING 1 ELI PORTLAND. Ore.. April 18. TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, Today By Arthur Brisbane Democratic Harmony, ' , Aylesworth Plunges In, Science and Crime, ; Playing at War, Copyright King Features Syod., Inc. HEARST RANCH, San Sim eon, Cal.,' April 14. Democ racy's campaign starts, as usual with a fight. One conspicuous candidate tells another under what conditions the first will take off his coat and knock the other Democrat into a cocked hat. Candidates agree that prohi bition is a big question. Each has an opinion different from that of all the others, except cautious candidates that have no opinion, and answer, "I iove my country," when asked what they think about beer. This situation does not uurt the feel ings of Herbert Hoover, only Republican candidate. -4-4 Some candidates denounce as "un American" other candidates that would "set the masses against the classes." The others retort: "It Is the masses' turn, and we do not need classes, anyhow: look where they have landed us." Democrata, In their love for each other, recall a story that Mr. Edward Cantor, young actor, has told to Hor ace Lorlmer, young editor. Mr. Cantor took Mrs. Cantor to aee Clark Cable, and, aayse cantor, when Cable took Joan Crawiord In his arms, "my wife, who watched the picture closely, said, 'pbooey." A few minutes later, at another passionate scene, she said 'Phooey' again. "Well, I thought, here at last Is a woman who sees nothing In Oable. Toward the end of the picture, when I heard her say phooey, a third time, I turned to the star'a defense. 'Ida, I protested, 'that's Clark Oable. Why do you say 'phooey?' She snapped back, 'Keep quiet, I was thinking of you.' " - M. H. Aylesworth, head of National Broadcasting, undertakes, as addi tional work, the presidency of Radlo- Kelth-Orpheunv corporation, which makes moving picture. Mr. Aylesworth must have the courage that goes with youth, for plunging into moving pictures now la like undertaking to swim Niagara rapids, only the movies are rougher. f4 David Sarnoff, president of the Ra dio Corporation of America, announc ing that Mr. Aylesworth would re place Mr. Brown, as head of R. K. O., says broadcasting la so closoly asso ciated with entertainment In general that that combining pictures and broadcasting management In one ca pable executive will work for effi ciency and economy. Mr. Aylesworth's remarkable auc- oess aa broadcasting mana'ger, achiev ed In five years, proves that there are still opportunities for young men. The difficulty Is to find young men that combine intelligence with 'no objection to hard work." Mr. Aylesworth's associates In R. K. O. will Include, In addition to David Sarnoff, Owen D. HOME CURB OF Hernia, breach and rupture are different names for the same condi tion, a protruberance or bulging of any Internal organ or atructure thru the Abdominal wall. There la no open wound or tear, but merely a weak a p o t that bulges. Trte most fre quent situation of hernia In Infancy la the navel, um bilicus, belly but ton. If this nor mal dimple or depression protrudes, bulges or stands out, especially when the baby cries or strains, It la um bilical hernia or navel rupture, as you please. In the majority of cases It may be cured by the early and constant ap plication of a suitable support o pre' vent the bulging for a few months. No excessive apparatus or appli ance la necessary. Any handy mother can make and apply the most effect' lve kind ot supporter for such hernia. . First find a button or wooden disk or poker cvhlp or coin about the alze of the bulging or protruding area. Pad this thickly with wool (not cot ton) or rubber sponge to give It a hemispherical shape like half orange, and cover with a piece of satin or silk, stitched In place to re tain the padding on the utton. Apply this with the padded side on the bulging navel and bold It in place with the flngera of one hand while you attach strips of adhesive plaster half an Inch wide and six or eight Inches long to It and the akin In crlBS-crosa fashion, to keep the pad exactly upon the navel. Then put on the baby's underskirt. and over this apply a well fitted belly Makers of big guns and armor plate have long competed, armor plate men trying to develop steel that no bul let can penetrate, gunmakers perfect ing guns able to penetrate anything. A similar conflict for supremacy exists now between crime and sci ence, with crime, as yet, far ahead. : Science's last .hope, announced by the Westlnghouse company of Pitts burgh, Is a device of tubes and cells that will photograph a burglar, sounding an alarm at the police sta tion, and gassing the burglar as well, besides turning on bright lights the moment he crosses an "invisible ray." Burglars will cut off the In vlslbl ray, aa they now cut telephone wires and poison watch dogs. The only way to discourage crime Is to make it more dangerous and less profitable. Our present conditions make It highly profitable, and not dangerous, '. In New York, for Instance, a crim inal in a holdup, in the absence of police, knows that he la the only armed man present. Think of that advantage, One hundred and four surface ships. Including ten battleships, have completed maneuvers off this coast, the roar of the big guns rattling dishes In Pasadena, back of Los An geles. Two hundred aircraft were includ ed In the mock warfare, thank heaven. Had the number been two thousand, It would have been about half enough. The public,' the President, the war and navy secretaries do not get all the facts concerning war practice. In recent mock warfare off Hawaii, (Continued on Page Thirteen.) Get Her "Pep?" way you feel that your lazy liver is again active, and your bowels are poison-free. Men, women, and children who are mn-down, who lire easily, got bilious spells or have frequent head aches, are soon straightened out when they get this prescriptional preparation of pure pepsin, active senna, and fresh laxative herbs. (Syrup pepsin is all the help the bowels need, and you do not form the very bad habit of always taking cathartics. ) , Keep a bottle of Dr. Caldwell's syrup pepsin in the house, and lake stimulating spoonful every now and then. It is all that a great many people ever take to keep strong and vigorous, and absolutely free iroui coiuUpalioo. RUPTURE IN INFANCY belt to support the pad and maintain slight constant pressure upon It. The belly belt should be made of linen or muslin folded once length wise, and hemmed around the edges. It should be an Inch or 1 Inches shorter than the baby's waist meas urement, and five or six inches wide. It should have eyelets In a row along each end, and a tap or cord to lace it on. One end should have a flap to lie under the lacing. In each side 1 of the belt Insert two-Inch widths of elastic webbing such -as la used for garters. Of course the adhesive plaster strips will require removal and re newal once a week or so or whenever they begin to come loose or slip on the akin, and they chould be reap plied in different places to prevent Irritation of the akin. - Z. O. adhe sive 1b best. ;rhfl pad itself may need renewal from time to time aa It be comes soiled. Use talcum freely on the navel Itself, but be careful to keep It off the skin, for It prevents adhesive from adhering. Alao keep oil or salve off the akin for the same reason. Old adhesive la readily re moved from the skin with the aid of a little gasoline on a cloth or lump of absorbent cotton, but be careful not to use gasoline in a room where there is a flame or a kerosene or oil lamp burning. If such a dressing la kept applied constantly for perhaps six months, It will prove curative in the great ma jority of cases of umbilical hernia except Instances where the hernia Is very large. ' Talks TD parents SINGS OF INSECURITY Bv Alice Judson Peale Wo think of the child who Is not sure ot himself as being shy and ttmld. Often, however, the feeling of insecurity la masked by all sort of other attitudes. Sometimes It appears in the form of a constant chip on the shoulder. The child Is always looking for a fight. Just because he does not feel self confident. Just because he Is afraid, he must fight to prove to himself that he Is neither. . Again the feeling of Insecurity shows itself as a tendency to brag glng and loud obstreperous be havoir. The child Is trying to per suade himself and everybody else that he is as good as the next fellow. Sometimes he Is over demonstra tive. Because he does not feel sure that mother and father care for him aa he wants them to, he kisses and embraces them with exaggerated fer vor. The more such a child Is scolded and punished and the lower he feelB that .he Is sinking in the estimation of others the more difficult will be his behavior, the more marked the symptoms of his inner distress.
