Applegate) Peter Skeen Ogden, when chief of trappers of the Hudson Bay com pany, with a brlRade of trappers, made a winter excursion Into and through t.he Klamath country In 1828. s w and named Mt. Shasta. He spelled the name of the region Clammttte. The erratic school teacher. Hnll J. Kelley of Boston, who for ao many years advocated the settlement of the Oregon country, published a map In 1630 in which he abbreviated the name to Clamet. Capt. John O. Fremont, the famous geographer and pathfinder, on his second exploration for Uncle Sam, accompanying, with a party of about 40 men, a part of the tlm the great wagon train of 1843, came up Fall river (Deschutes) and camped De cember 11, 1843, at the Klamath Marsh, which ha called Klamath Laka. He found the Klamath Indians friendly, and the ehlef of the village piloted him on his way some dis tance through the wllderneas toward the east, where .he expected to find the fabulous Buena Ventura river, and follow It to the bay of San Francisco. The country was practically an an unknown region at that time, and we know that Fremont crossed the great barrier of the Sierra Nevada In February. 1844, his party suffering Incredible hardships. He came agsin, that time from the Sacramento val ley. In the Mexican province of Alta, California, and camped, May 1, 1848, at the southeast corner of Tula Lake, where we have placed a marker; crossed the Klamath river where It Issues from Klamath lake, at the In dlsn village of Eulaboua, May 6, 1840. where we have also placed a stone marker. Fremont'e purpose was to complete his exploration of the Klamath coun try, which had on hi previous trip greatly Impressed him with Its beauty and potentialities. He was overtaken by Lieut. CtUlesple of the marine ser vice, with Information that war had been declared against Mexico, and waa ordered to return to California and endeavor to break the Mexican power In that great province. He had three men killed, another wounded by Indians at Rock creek (called by htm Denny creek) on the eastern side of K Is math lake, Attacked the Klamaths at their great village on Williamson river. May 13. 1848, Kit Carson leading In the attack; killed fourteen Klamaths and burned their vlllsge. In a subsequent attack In the tim ber south of Wllltnmaon river, Fre mont saved Carson'i life by Jumping hi horse onto a Klamath, who was in the act of shooting Carson, with an arrow, and one of Fremont's Delaware scouts killed the pro t rate Indian i with a war club.
