The regular personnel of the Re
liable Orocery took a back seat
Saturday and each customer vaa
greeted by a Smiling salesman, one
of the alxteen manufacturer's rep
resentatives who were In charge of
sales for the day.
w. A. Holloway, owner of the
North Central -grocery atore says
that these sslesmen have been In
ferring for several months that cua
tomera were not fully acquainted
with the merits of the many at
tractive lines of quality merchan
dise featured st the Reliable groc
ery. So Mr. Holloway ssys he cell
ed In these sslesmen to run the
store for a day.
Customers came early and the
store was crowded all day. Many
who could not get In phoned for
the special deals offered yesterday.
The salesmen made good, the day
wsa a huge success and every per
son who entered the store secured
a new conception of reel sales
courtesy. Bill Holloway and his
saalstant did not have an oppor
tunity to take trims as eaay as
they anticipated. They were kept
busy all day wrapping groceries,
answering the phone and ringing

Peter Skeen Ogden, when chief of
trappers of the Hudson Bay com
pany, with a brlRade of trappers,
made a winter excursion Into and
through t.he Klamath country In
1828. s w and named Mt. Shasta. He
spelled the name of the region
Clammttte.
The erratic school teacher. Hnll J.
Kelley of Boston, who for ao many
years advocated the settlement of the
Oregon country, published a map In
1630 in which he abbreviated the
name to Clamet.
Capt. John O. Fremont, the famous
geographer and pathfinder, on his
second exploration for Uncle Sam,
accompanying, with a party of about
40 men, a part of the tlm the great
wagon train of 1843, came up Fall
river (Deschutes) and camped De
cember 11, 1843, at the Klamath
Marsh, which ha called Klamath
Laka. He found the Klamath Indians
friendly, and the ehlef of the village
piloted him on his way some dis
tance through the wllderneas toward
the east, where .he expected to find
the fabulous Buena Ventura river,
and follow It to the bay of San
Francisco.
The country was practically an
an unknown region at that time, and
we know that Fremont crossed the
great barrier of the Sierra Nevada In
February. 1844, his party suffering
Incredible hardships. He came agsin,
that time from the Sacramento val
ley. In the Mexican province of Alta,
California, and camped, May 1, 1848,
at the southeast corner of Tula Lake,
where we have placed a marker;
crossed the Klamath river where It

where we have also placed a stone
marker.
Fremont'e purpose was to complete
his exploration of the Klamath coun
try, which had on hi previous trip
greatly Impressed him with Its beauty
and potentialities. He was overtaken
by Lieut. CtUlesple of the marine ser
vice, with Information that war had
been declared against Mexico, and
waa ordered to return to California
and endeavor to break the Mexican
power In that great province.
He had three men killed, another
wounded by Indians at Rock creek
(called by htm Denny creek) on the
eastern side of K Is math lake,
Attacked the Klamaths at their
great village on Williamson river. May
13. 1848, Kit Carson leading In the
attack; killed fourteen Klamaths and
burned their vlllsge.
In a subsequent attack In the tim
ber south of Wllltnmaon river, Fre
mont saved Carson'i life by Jumping
hi horse onto a Klamath, who was
in the act of shooting Carson, with an
arrow, and one of Fremont's Delaware
scouts killed the pro t rate Indian
i with a war club.

A great Emigrant train waa massa
cred by Modocs In the fall of 1863 at
Bloody Point on the eaatern margin
of Tula Lake, thus beginning a period
of tragic events In that region, which
continued for a number of yeara, the
last rescue of a train there occurring
In July 1881.
In 1859 Ledfora and four other
white men were killed by Molalaa
and Klamaths at Rancharea Prairie
near Mt. Pitt In the Cascades, Chief
La takes of the Klamaths brought
three heada of the murderera to
Jacksonville and Skorkus John, an
other of the' murderers, wsa killed at
Fort Klamath when attempting to
escape.
In 1863 Port Klamath a company
post, was established ten mile, north
of upper Klamath lake. It was the
nucleus for mllltsry operations dur
ing both tbe anake and Modoo wars,
and the troops were withdrawn from

The great treaty with the Klam
aths. Modocs and Yahooskln band of
Snake Indians occurred at Council

head men of the tribes on Oct. 19,
1864. On the part of tbs Modocs, It
was signed by Hesd Chief Sconchln
being Klntpros, afterwards known aa
and three aub-chlefa, one of these

war of 1873-3,
Capt. Lindsay Applegate, who had
been Instrumental In securing the
establishment of Port Klamath, took
chares of the Indiana at Pt. Klamath
In 189 and In 1848 built the cabins
of the original agency at Kowasta
Indian village, at the head of Klam
ath lake.
In October and November, 1847,
Supt. Huntington with a great wseon
train conveying annuity tools for the
Klamath Indiana, cams through the
central Oregon country from The
Dalles. There waa no road for wagons
then south of the Canyon City road,
and the train waa preceded by a band
of Indians, the "axe and rifle com
pany." who opened the road before
the train. This waa the Oenesla of
The Dalles and California highway.
The first fight of the Modoc -ar
occurred on Lost River, a mile east
of the stone Bridge, on the morning
of Nov. 39. 1873, In an attempt by
capt. Jamea Jackson, with a force of
only thirty-five men, to return Capt.
Jack and hie lnaurgent bsnd of Mo
docs to the reservation. It was pre
cipitated by a duel between Lieut.
Bowtelle of the army and Bcarface
Charley, one of Jacks moat desperate
warrlora. The army force waa inade
quate, and the Modocs escaped to
their stronghold In the Lava Beds

Qen. Canby and many others who
lost their lives In this final struggle
with the red men of the region.
April 38, 1873 occurred the defeat
of the command of Capt. Evan The
consisting of about eighty mej
who were surprised at the Sand Hills,
four miles south of the stronghold.
while making reconnalsance and
twenty-two men were killed snd
nineteen wounded.
A number ot minor engagements
occurred, the last on March 12 at Dry
Lake, In which the Modocs were de
feated by the soldiers; and soon after,
the surrender of the band occurred.
Capt. Jack himself surrendered with
a remnant of his band June 6. 1873,
at Willow Creek canyon, east of Cleat
Lake, and the tragedy of the Modoo
war terminated by the execution of
Captain Jack, Sconchtn John, Black.

gilt on stone memorials. The swords
have loat their brilliance, the hel
mets and shiny buttons are tarnish
ed. In fact, the whole glorious tem
ple of Mara haa crumpled Into ashes.
We respect our noble war dead, but
we question the Judgment of those
responsible for their deatth.
Organised alaughter, we realize,
doea not settle a dispute; It merely
silences an argument. We Insist that
for violence be substituted Juridical
control through the World Court and
executive action through the League
ot Nations. If we are to evolve an
International order out of anarchy,
we muet renounce nationalism and
drastically curtail the absolute sov
ereignty of states.
The other speakers have much at
stake: we have even more, for we are
literally flg,htlng for our Uvea. I atand
before you aa an attorney for the de
fense, pleading for a reprieve.' It la
my generation which will be called,
upon to surrender all we consider
worthwhile In life In order to be
come targets for machine gun bul
lets and victims for the latest poison
ous gss. It Is the young men and
women of my age who will be com
manded to commit suicide. It la my

to destroy the best of human culture,
perhaps civilization itself, for causae
which future hlstorlana wilt discover
to be erroneous, if not utterly stu
pid or actually vicious. Wa have)

In a sense, I am presenting an ul
timatum, rather than a petition. For
behind your deliberations stands
staring down at us the specter of
Death. Wa desire , to live and to live
at peace. We desire to construct s
world society providing freedom,
equal opportunity, and a sense of se
curity. We desire to mske possible
for every humsa being full develop
ment of personality In terms of the
highest human and aplrltual values
