Eighteen lengths separated the two famous crews as the southern veter ans flashed ocer the finish line In 16 minutes and 49 seconds In the three mile varsity race. Two Pacific Coast titles went to California today. The Blue and Gold Junior-varsity smothered the Wash ington second boat by six lengths In a three-mile row, taking 17 minutes and 14.6 seconds to cover the dls ance. Washington's only salvation came In the freshman two-mile race when the Husky Pups conquered the "Cal Cubs' by three and one-half lengths In surprising fashion. (AP) Dr. Clarence Spears, on whom Wis consin pins Its hopea for a football renaissance, was welcomed to Madl sono today by more than 350 per sons, Including townspeople, stu dents and members of the univer sity athletic department. "It was a long hard trip and we certainly appreciate this wel come." said the new Wisconsin coach as he stepped from his train with Mrs. Spears and their three chldren. FOR GAS TESTS Earl Cooper, who has made rac ing history on the dirt and brick track, will come to Medford Monday to conduct a series of demonstra tions here for the Union Oil com pany. This famous racing driver is now test engineer for the Union organization with headquarters in Los Angeles and is touring the coast with special testing equip ment that shows the superiority of famous Union "78" gasoline. J. 8. Clirton. assistant manager of the Oregon district, will accompany CoopeT to this city. While In Medford, Earl Cooper will demonstrate to motorists, at different points in the city, the smooth performance Union "76" gives to automobile motors. In this novel demonstration, the famous racing car pilot will use a micro phone which is attached to the engine block and can be operated from the steering post, according to Union officials. This microphone amplifies the inaudible gasoline knocks in motors, giving a close check on the smooth power deliv ered by Union "76" la comparison with other fuels. The microphone amplifies motor knocks several hun dred times and vras developed by technicians of the Union Oil com pany. When Cooper and Clifton arrive in Medford they will be greeted by A. Z. Dean, special agent for the southern Oregon district for the Union Oil company, and T. E. Wil liams. Medford manager. Parr against tha Pacific Record Herald and Earl H, Fehl, Its editor, will be henrd during the week of Aplrl 18. Both sides have filed numerous affidavits. Parr was awarded a $15,000 verdict against the publication and editor.
