Since establishment of the Medford airport an Increasing traffle of planes on United Air Llnee schedules, pri vate crait and army and navy ma chines are making use of the facili ties. At sunrise Saturday preparations were made at the port to greet the first passenger and mall plane, a s.u-3-4, to arrive here from Oakland at 0:tS a. m., having left Los An geles Friday night at 10:46 o'clock. Prom the post off ice, where the null was weighed, D. M. McDannels took It to the airport at 0 a. m., and plaeed It In the mall room until the arrival of the ahlp. Reservations on the plane were checked by the United Air Lines lo cal superintendent, Phil Sharp, and reports of the mall made by him. When the plane was within a hun dred mile radius of Medford, the operator in the dispatch rooms sent out a weat&er report of conditions In the valley. Each 30 minutes the plane reported its position, and the dispatcher communicated, according to time allotments on the schedule clock. , The mall was exchanged when the ahlp arrived, while the plane was re fueled. In keeping with government regulations, a weather report was made out for the pilots by the U. 8. weather bureau located on the sec ond floor of the airport building, and given the filers by Mr. Sharp. Department of commerce rules make It necessary for reports to be com piled on hourly Information received on the teletype. The United Air Lines pilot who flew the plane to Medford, O rover Tyler, registered before leaving the airport, so that he might be located at any time If an emergency flight became necessary. While waiting for the plane to be refueled, the four passengers sat In the reception room, walked around the hangar and enjoyed the sunshine and lawn In front of the building. The plane was taken out by Charles Stead. Routine work about the port, with the dispatch operators keeping In touch with the ships and ground stations of the lines, as well as keep ing a station log of all radio activi ties, kept the dispatchers busy until time for the 12:30 trl-motor mall and passenger craft from Portland. Weather records, and obtaining nec essary data, occupy the major part of the time of W. J. Hutchison, me teorologist, and his assistants, Ken neth Anderson. C. W. Ahlborn. C. F. Penfleld and W. R. Crura. A 34-hour service Is furnished from this office. A telephone system between the dispatcher's room and the weather department makes It possible for the dispatchers to furnish the planes and ground stations wlt,h any data con cerning weather. At noon the mall arrived for the big ship, and the radio departments obtained Information from Pilot Al Davis as to the number of psssen gers, the amount of mall, and the destinations of the travelers. Lunches were prepared by Dean Dow of the Airport cafe for 10 pas sengers continuing south. Other aviators tnklng planes north, who are stationed at Medford, are H. C. Miller. Harold Adams and Frank Anderllne, and going south are H. V. Lofland and Ralph Verdln. Continual service Is given In the dispatch room by Ken Williams. Bill Rosenbaum, Phil Showalter and Cliff Hannum. In the hangar, assisting Mr. Clark son with the refueling of private plane making frequent sojourns, la Tom Culbertson, who files his own ship. Marshall Seagrare has his J-6-7 Travelalr at the port, and W. H. Fluhrer. W. H. Mulr.hesd and Floyd Hart also station their plane In the city hangar. Throughout the morning. William Clarkson, city superintendent of the airport, was busy yesterday making repairs on the U, S. S. Loenlng am phibian, en route to Alaska, where the navy lieutenants will make an air photographic study of Kodtak Island. The ships left Saturday afternoon for the north. Lleuta. R. H. Harrell, J. R. W. Vest and J. C. Tafforty. E. O. Roger and A. C. Shafer made up the crews of two pilots and a radio technician In each amphibian. E. L. Yuravlch of Washington, D. C, federal airways Inspector, flying a flee -place Belanca with a Wright J-fl-9. SOOhorsepower engine, took off yesterday from the Medford airport for Redding and Oakland, Cal to Inspect the federal radio beams, hav ing checked the one about a mile and a half from the Medford airport. As the amphibians disappeared northward, three army P-12-F planes, en rout to Crlssey field from Seattle, stopped at the Medford airport to refuel, before continuing southward. Pilots were Capt. Wm. Morris, Capt. C. E. Duncan and Lieut. E. W. An derson They took off about 3 o'clock. The trl-motor from the south was set down at the port, at 9 p. m. Sat urday and was refueled, with the ground crew aiding in placing the mall In the ship. A co-pilot and stewardess travel on eaoh of the trl motors, the stewardesses being gradu ate nurses. Beacons about the valley and the airport cast their lights for miles to guide the 40-B-4 stopping at Medford at 10:35 p. m., when lunches for passengers are placed on the ahlp and the mall transferred. Via California Costs No More Effective May 33 with the annual offering of reduced rail round trips to eastern destinations, travelers from this city and most western Ore gon points will have the privilege of including California on their trip at no additional fare over going directly east and back, according to J. C. Carle, local agent. Mr. Carle also said the new low fares would be de cidedly lower than last year and would be featured by the offering of new 30-day limit round trips at fares which hit new low levels. Removal by Southern Pacific of the extra charge formerly applied for going east via California opens up an entirely new choice of routings for the east-boound traveler from this territory, Mr. Carle said. From .here to Chicago, for example, the traveler can swing through Ban Francisco and Los Angeles and thenoe to Chicago, returning via different route through California or circling back via the northern line, or re versing the direction, for the same fare as to go directly to Chicago and back. Along with its new distinction in appearance it has the great value of actually making Nash performance even finer because of its aerodyna mic design. Frontal air resistance is reduced by the V-radiator and sloping windshield for their aerodynamic contours go "with" the wind instead of "against" it as do the old-style snub-nose radi ator and upright windshield. At the same time the body taper and Beavertail back minimize rear end vacuum "hold-back", because Nash slip-streams both rear and front. Thus power-waste is avoided and miles are added to Nash top speed. Prices at the factory range from $777 to $2055. Wheelbases from 116 inches to 142 inches.
