MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 193L PAOE ETflHT Ethel Hall, Noted Home Economist, Presides at Tribune School el '1 I I T GAS CHIEF NOTES T. A. Hopkins, vice -president and general manager of the Southern Oregon Ou Corporation, who arrived here the lint of the week from San Francisco, has divided his tlm be tween Medford and branch offices of . the Southern Oregon Qa Corporation in an endeavor to ascertain &ow the gaa industry in southern Oregon compares with the nation's statistics ' as a whole. The Southern Oregon . Oas Corporation supplies gas to Med ford, Grants Pass, Ashland, Roseburg and vicinities. Mr. Hopkins has observed that In spite of the general business depres sion, there is a greater demand than ever for gaa service In this territory. . This paradoxical situation is notice able throughout the entire United States and Is partially explained by the saving in both time and money that gas makes possible, according : to Mr. Hopkins. "The first six months in 1931 shows an increase of ten percent in gas sales over the first half of 1030, in the United States. Statistics for th same time period also show that the total number of gas customers has increased by 36,066; that 1782 additional miles of gas mains were laid," he declared. "There are many factors responsi ble for the growth of tfie gas Indus try. Natural gas has played an lm- portant part. It has entered fields formerly occupied only by manufac tured gas, stimulating competition. Many new plants have been eatab- Ushed where previously gas was un attainable. This further proves the demand that has been placed upon the gas Industry for its product. "The speed and flexibility of gas ' offers another substantial reason for its growing popularity. In our United States speed plays a major role In the lives of the people. Oas, the great American servant, aids In ' countless ways, by saving time, both er, and money, besides offering effi ciency in the highest degree. "While gas Is most commonly thought of in terms of 'instant heat,' the coming of Blectrolux, the gas automatic refrigerator, has proven the versatility of this fuol. A new era In refrigeration has begun and s new psge appended to the already remarkable -history of the gas Indus try. "Another aid to speed and modern efficiency, -faas been found In the automatic gas water-heater. With this storage gas water heater, an un limited supply of hot water Is always on tap to facilitate the speed of the ; hurried business man. "In the last two years a notable improvement has occurred, in the products of gas appliance manufac turers. Ranges have been designed and produced of a greatly superior quality of materials and workman ship than ever before. The efficiency and beauty of the modern home has been considered In every respect." . Featured at Tribune School E Tim beautiful new creation, the Hotpoint, "Hoite" model electrlo ranse will lie especially featured at the Moll Tribune cooking; school. "I noticed you hadn't," John an swored. "Them are 17 different kinds of Penguins," a n -other Penguin speaker added, and In this way they gTi their history each one telling a little bit to add to what the others had said. "There are pen guins living In many of the Islands, around the southern hemisphere, and below the equator there are relatives." "Yos," added another Penguin, 'and there are some members of the family living along the African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope. ' "Penguin fathers are very good na tured. The, always help take care of tn M. d If a Mrs. Penguin wants Vj- jib J to go i.'-r a swim Mr. Penguin takes the eggs off her toes by placing his close to them so the egg can roll off on his feet. "They will see that It Is quite se cure by arranging It In Just the right position with their beaks." "We King Penguins," spoke up an other, "do not have a nest. The Adele Penguins other cousins have nests of stones. "The Cape Penguins give feath ers to their brides Just as the rest of us carry a pebble to the lady of our choice, showing we want to havo her as our mate. Of course the Emperor never docs this as he lives only In the really polar, antarctic regions, where there Is only Ice." "You must tell our visitors," Bald another Penguin, "about our cousins the Macaroni Penguins." "Are they like macaroni?" Peggy asked. "To be sure," answered a King Penguin. "They have feathers over their ears which people say looks like macaroni." Tomorrow "More Penguin History" Electricity, taking the form of light and power, Is a decided factor in modern merchandising In the small store as well as the large. Merchants have found It indispensable In light ing their show windows and store rooms; grinding coffee, cutting meat and In producing low temperatures in which perishable foods can be stored with safety until sold. According to Mr. A. B. Cunning ham, local distributors of General Electric Refrigerators, electric refri geration, already playing an Import ant part In retail grocery and meat stores, is destined to take even a greater hold in the years to come. As the public ownership of electrlo refrigerators increases, people will be reluctant to purchase supplies from the stores not having the most mod ern electrlo refrigeration. "Shop owners already realize this, which explains to a certain extent, the great demand for our new self defrosting, hermetically sealed com mercial refrigerators. With these re frigerators, perfect temperatures and strictest sanitation can be maintain ed with a minimum amount of de hydration. We believe It Is the only unit carrying a two year guarantee which relieves the owner of any re-j sponslblllty during this period."
