Ned Burgess, who ; were recently married In Boston, Mass., are guest this week of Mr. J Burgess father. E. O. Burgess, Jr., and Mrs. Burgess at their ranch : home on Griffin creek. They are spending the week end at the coast, 1 . having motored with the Leonard ' Carpenters to Gold Beach and Agnes. While here, the Burgess' will be the Inspiration for much delightful en tertaining. Former Opera Star Visits Friend Here Mme. Math 1 Id e Cottrelly, a former noted opera singer and , actress of Europe and New York city, was a guest during the week of Mrs. Royal E. Bebb, Mme. Cottrelly, an old time friend of Mrs. Bebb's, was ac companied by Mrs. D. Archibald of Los Angeles, with whom she motored from New York through the Cana dian Rockies en route to Los Angeles. Mrs. Archibald Is a playwright and Is writing the life of Mme. Cottrelly, which promises to make a very In teresting book. Past Matrons Here Meet for Luncheon An enjoyable affair of Monday afternoon In lodge circles was the luncheon for past matrons of Reames chapter, O. E. 8., held at the Hotel Medford. Luncheon was followed by bridge and prizes went to Miss Ger trude Weeks and Mrs. E. G. RlddeU. Hostesses for the event were Mes dames C. D. Thompson, Chas. Wood and R. G. Fowler. Thursday Musicale Announces Concert This week's meeting of the Thurs day Musicals will be In the form of an organ concert at the Presbyterian church at 10:30 a. m. The public la Invited to the event and promised a very worthwhile program. Local ar tists who will entertain at the organ are Miss Dorothy Reynolds, Robert Could and Sebastian Apollo. There will be no admission charges. Church Night Held For New Members Regular church night, honoring the 121 nev members, was conducted Wednesday at the First Christian church, with a covered dish dinner at seven o'clock. A program, which Included a variety of reports and entertaining numbers, was given fol- lowing dinner. This large number has been added to the organization during the past year, A song service led by Rev. W. R. Baird was conducted, after which Miss Genevieve Brown entertained with a piano solo. Talks were given by leaders of various departments, .with Mrs. Allan Curry speaking for the Missionary society, Miss Lenev Slmklns, HiTrlangle club; Mrs. Ern est N. Blden, women's organization: Marjorle Gregory, Chrisitlan Endeav or; M. E. Olson, Bible school; Lee Smith, the official church board. Misses Brown and Virginia Gregory sang a vocal duet, followed by a reading by Rev. Balrd. Dr. I. H. Gove sang a solo, after which new church . members responded. The evening's program closed with the entire group singing, "Blest Be the Tie That Binds." Junior HI git Faculty Has Annual Plcnlo About forty people enjoyed the an nual fall picnic of the Medford Junior high school faculty,' held Fri day evening at the Elks picnic ground. A huge bonfire was built, and the group enjoyed toasting part of their food around the fire. A. H. Fitch and B. R. Finch chose sides for the baseball game, which Is a yearly event at the picnic, with Mr. Fitch's team being the victor. A luncheon set was presented Mrs. Hlldlng Bengtson, member of the faculty, recently married. Past Noble Grands Meet at Millard Home The Past Noble Grands club .of the Rebekah lodge met on Thursday eve ning at the home of Ellse Millard on Haven street. This was the first meeting of the olub since the sum mer vacation. The greater part of the evening was spent In finishing a quilt. ' Mrs. Ethel Weed, president of the club, being away, on vacation, Mrs. Lona Bergman presided. Mrs. Millard was assisted In serving refreshments by Maude Stickle and Mary Wiley. T Choir Forms Orpnnlzntlnn Members of the choir at the First Christian church were entertained Thursday evening at the studio of their director, Mrs. Effie Herbert Yeoman. Twenty-one members were present. Organization was perfected, with Mrs. Eunice Smith being elected president, Miss Virginia Gregory, secretary-treasurer; Miss Leneve Sim kins, librarian, and L. O. Centner, chairman of the rules committee. A social concert Is being planned for this month, and other programs for the autumn season, including a musical play. Pythian Club to Hold Card Mrty This Week The Py.hlan Sisters will again en tertain with card party In the KnlghU of Pythias hall Wednesday, October 14 at 8 o'clock. Dinner Enjoyed ' At Newhall Home Mn. C. 8. Newhall entertained at dinner last evening at her home near Jacksonville, for a small group of friends. Mrs. Martin Lends Interest to Recent Social Events Here Mrs. Alfred T. Martin of Chicago, who was house guest last week of her sister, Mrs. P. W. Hamlll was the Incentive for several dinner parties and luncheons. Mrs, Hamlll enter tained at dinner for her pleasure Sunday evening, inviting the follow ing guests: Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. F. Corning Kenly, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. W. Ruhl, and Messrs. E. W. Carlton and T. Slater Johnston. ' Mrs. Kenly was hostess Wednesday at a small luncheon complimenting Mrs. Martin. Covers were placed for Mesdames Martin, Hamlll, Leonard Carpenter and the Misses Helen and Mae Carlton. Lady Lions Meet For Luncheon At Mulholland Home The Lady Lions club met at the home of Mrs. R. C. Mulholland on Berkeley Way Wednesday afternoon for luncheon and cards. There were four tables in play and prizes award ed Mrs. F. G. Bunch and Mrs. H. T. Hubbard. Assisting Mrs. Mulholland as hos tess were Mesdames Henry Pace and A. D. Collier. Ensign and Mrs. Uodlove Popular Guests Here Ensign and Mrs. Wilbur Godlove, whose marriage was a. recent event in Los Angeles, were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Fox and greet ed by many friends here, where they made their home until a few years ago. They left -yesterday for the south and after visiting Ensign God love's parents In Bishop, Calif., will continue to San Diego, where he is stationed with the flying corps of the United States navy. Mrs. Jar ml n Entertains Sisters This Week Guests of Mrs. W. H. Jarmlr at her home, 81414 Sherman, are her sisters, Mesdames Anna Mills and Alma Hes ter, both of Los Angeles. They plan to spend 10 days here. Mrs. Inskeep and Children In Portland L Mrs. L. D. Inskeep and little daugh ters, Barbara and Susan, are spend ing this week in Portland with Mrs. Inskeep's mother, Mrs. August Grone with whom they made the trip north Friday. All Countries Enter Program Of Study Club 9s First Session The Wednesday Study club gave a most interesting program on October 7th, the first meeting of the year. A brief resume of the latest events In the history of the countries studied last year, was followed In each case by current events and discussion. The countries considered were: China with Its problems of civil war, famine and disease, encroachment by Ja pan, and influx of communists from Russia; her irrigation projects for relief work and the probability that all warring factions will unite to free China from Japanese aggression; India and Ghandl, names that are almost synonymous, the influence he has gained by passive resistance, which no armed force could have ac complished, also his plea, that free dom is every nation's birthright. Russia Is modifying her economic rulings and equality of labor is abol ished. Skilled labor is doing piece work, and large salaries are paid to experts. The government's attempts to better the living conditions do not meet with great success. It was brought out in the program. Arabia and Palestine are still hav ing trouble over the question of Jew or Arab as the dominating Influence, and whether the land can support so- many people. Carnival Dance Interests Many Many local people are anticipating the carnival dance to be held Thurs day night In the Knights of Pythias hall. This will be the opening dance of- the fall season and the hall will be a colorful setting for the event with carnival decorations of balloons and crepe paper. Horns as favors will add much to the festivity. The public is invited and the dance is In charge of Mrs. Margaret Franklin. Refreshments will be served. Miss Sommer to Spenk on Egypt On the evening of Saturday, Oct. 17, at St. Mark's Guild ball, Miss Julia K. Sommer will give an Illus trated lecture on the topic, "Ancient Egypt's Story." Miss Sommer, a former teacher In the Chicago public schools, at pres ent heads an educational reform movement which alms to bring Into practical realization more Ideal alms and methods in education. Norrls, past Btate vice president of the Daughters of Ameri can Revolution, gave an address on economic problems and International law. Mrs. Norrls traced the economic conditions abroad and at home since the World war, showing how the tariff and different plans had led to the present status of affairs In Inter national relations. The United States has tried for the last ten years to bring about disarma ment, first at the Washington con ference in 1021, then at Paris, and again lost year at London and still we are looking forward to great things from the February disarmament conference nt Geneva, stated Mrs. Norrls. She read and explained the six fundamental principles of Interna tional law named by the text books, "Building the World Society,,. Mrs. Harold Crowell was the inspiration for a party given at the home of Mrs. Roy Burleson on Thursday afternoon of this week. Miss Elva Caster and Mrs. L. O. Mrs. Crowell was the recipient of many lovely gifts. -f-f- University Heads Will Be Honored On Medford Visit Representatives of the University of Oregon from Eugene, and state officers of Oregon Mothers and Dads, who are now making a statewide tour In the Interests of the university, will be in Medford, October 20. A ban quet at the Medford Hotel Is being arranged in their honor. Special guests for the occasion will be Arnold Bennett Hall, president of the university; Burt Brown Barker, vice-president; Dean Alfred Powers of the extension division; Mrs. Paul W. Ager, executive secretary of Ore gon Mothers; Mrs. Walter M. Cook, of Portland, honorary president of Oregon Mothers; Mrs. F. Bond of Pendleton, active president, and Mr. Ayers, state president of Oregon Dads. All alumni, members of Oregon Mothers and Oregon Dads, also friends interested In the university are urged to make early reservations for the dinner. President Hall Is especially anxious to meet the par ents of freshmen at the university. He will have a message of Interest to all. Following the dinner there will be meetings of Oregon Mothers and Dads. The mothers will hold their meeting on the mezzanine floor of the hotel immediately after dinner. All mothers of university students are asked to attend. An effort Is be ing made by the committee to per sonally contact each mother.
