Sine the acci dent rate la about a high as can be endured now, It 1 probable that the roada will b widened and atralght-ened. -M- KJO SOONER do we get a system ' of good roada built than we find It Inadequate for our needs, and so we turn In and REBUILD IT. Oolng back a few years, the rail roads no sooner got their track laid than they found them too light, the grades too steep, the bridge not heavy enough to carry the heavier train that were made poeslble by In vention and progress. Bo they turned In and rebuilt their whole system of tracks. Just a wa seem to be about to do with our highways, IT LOOKS' like 1 scandalous lot of wast. But smart mind tell us It I this oonatant growth and progress, this constant tearing down and build ing better, thl oonatant FINDING SOMETHING TO DO, that have made ua great and prosperous and that a soon sa w begin to rest on our oar, whan we STOP tearing down and building better, a has been the case during the present depression, w be gin to atagnet and fall back Into the class of th older European coun trle. Takes Less To Kill Sunst, Quickest Death to ATHLETICS HAVE E Connie Mack's Champions Have Habit of Blasting Opposing Pitchers for Cluster of Runs in Pinches By Alan Gould (Associated Fresa Spprta Editor) NEW YORK, Sept. 38. (AP)-The world's champion Athletics have decided edge over the Cardinals In offensive strength, measured, by the power of their long range guns nd the ability to strike swiftly in the pinches. The Cards excel in speed on the bases. There are weak spots In the A's batting order but ths dynamite is likely to explode any time Al Sim mons, Mickey Cochrane or Jimmy Poxx steps Into a fast ball. The champions have habit of blasting opposing pitching ill over the prem ises just when they look to be wll under control. The Cubs as well aa the Cardinals have had bitter exper ience with the ability of Mack's youag men to emerge suddenly with a cluster of runs. Simmons A Menace Gabby Street regards Simmons as the greatest meance, thereby being In complete accord with seven Amer ican league managers. Gabby also recalls Cochrane 'a slugging a year ago aa well Poxx'a home run that broke up the crucial fifth game. This trio, also with some timely batsmen ' as Bishop, Haas, and Miller, comprise the principal attacking weapons that Grimes, Hallahan, Derringer and other Cardinal sharpshooters must worry about. The Athletics, In th- season's unof ficial averages show a club batting mark of .287 to the Cardinals' .285. The slugging records showed a mure cotuplcuous difference In favor of the A's who collected 118 home runs against only 68 for the cards. . Hits For Extra Bases The last world's series told much ths same story aa these figures The club marks were nothing to brag about, only .200 for the Cards and .107 for the A's. The world champ Ions however, made 18 of their 35 bits good for extra bases. Including six home runs whereas the Cardinals registered only 18 extra base drives in their total of 38 hits, Charley Gelbert, sensational young shortstop, was the batting leader of the Cards a year ago In the champ ionship fray with 310. Sunny Jim Bottomley, bothered by a hand lnjuiy, hit only .045 and was a "bust." Chick Hafey hit a mere .273. These two sluggers have been hitting harder than ever this year despite the less lively ball, and are counted upon to redeem themselves. If Bottomley and Hafey can hold their own with Simmons and Coch rane or Foxx In the long-range work when booming drives are needed, it will be anybody's series. The differ ence Is that the Cardinal pair were comparatively easy for Grove and Earnshaw last October whereas Sim mons, Cochrane and Poxx manlfrat ed their ability to shellack the best pitching the Cards could offer. Sim mons hit .374 to lead both clubs a year ago and has Just finished win ning his second straight American league batting title. Prank Prison hit poorly In the last series but his all-around record as a "money player" Is superlative. The Cardinal second-sarker has pounded his way well above the .300 mark this season after a slow strt. Pepper Mar tin. George Wat kin, Jimmy Wilson and Gelbert all pack a dangerous punch.
