Tho wood, burled under a burden of volcanic turf as deep as 60: feet, is 23 miles west of the lako rim. A number of the logs are over 50 feet In length and wero found rest ing in horizontal position, sans roots, stumps or branches. How ever, small branches wero found dotached, Indicating that with the logs, thjcy had floated; there in wntor and were subsequently burled by the volcanic ashes. Tho discovery was mado by road crews grading on tho Union creek road to Diamond lake alongi near tho Rogue river. Tho wood Is completely turned to charcoal, the los having been entombed under thick loada of hot ashes nnd. the heat, coupled with the rapidity In which they fell, re sulted in the exclusion of oxygen, preventing tho combustion of the material. D. H. Llbbey, naturalist of the Crater Lake National Park, visited the ricene a few days ago and plans to preserve a complete awortment of tho wood.
