The plan was established In the Medford scliool system hy Mr. lledrlck in the spring of 1 0. and sreat difficulty was at first en countered In persuading some local hank or loan institution to handle the deposits. To handle the many small accounts turned In hy the schools meant extra expense in clerical work to the institution un ilcrlakins it, and the fear was gen eral among them that the venture would he short-lived. Deposits are made each Tues day through the schools, the stu dents banking any amount from one cent up. No matter how small a beginning you make this week, your dream of a happy home will be realized with only a little sac rifice. .!!.. LOCAL INTERESTS E FT WEEK MOVEMENT In observance of National Thrift Week. Jan. 17 to Jan. 3, Med ford institutions are stressing the importance of paving in order to insure happiness for future years. The week has been officially di vided Into the following: Thrift Day: Sharo-with-olhers Day; l!ud net Day; Make a Will Day; Life Insurance Day; Own Your Own Home Day; and Safe Investment Day. This segregation Includes suggestions which are undoubted ly of value to every citizen of Med ford. and the purpose of Thrift Week is to forcibly remind people of ways and' means by which they may improve their standard of. liv ing through consistent saving. Schools throughout the entire nation have only recently organ ized banking plans whereby the students deposit either small or large amounts certain days of each week. Thus tho thrift habit is being Installed into the minds of America' youth so that future generations may appreciate the value of saving. Among the financially success ful men who have put themselves on record in reply to the question. "Is saving necessary?1' are the fol lowing: Theodore Roosevelt has said: "The habit of saving money, while It stiffens the will, also brightens one's energy. If you would be sure that you are beginning right, begin to save." .lames J. Hill, the railroad king of the northwest and one of the greatest developers of men Amer ica has known, laid down this rule: "If you want to know whether you are destined to be a success or failure in life, you can easily find out. The test is simple and in fallible. Are you able to save money?' Now come two of the greatest modern merchants of America: John Wanamaker has said: "The difference between tho clerk who spends all his salary and the clerk who saves part of It, is the dif ference in ten years between the owner of a business and n man out of a Job." Marshall Field, of Chicago, had a recipe for success. It watt this: "If you would succeed in busi ness, always spend a little less than you earn. No matter how small your earnings, you should master this art." r- ' WASHINGTON. Jnn. 17. 0P) The senalo today approved the ' 5, 00 0,001) appropriation for Rod Cross relief work. There was no record vote. l CONGRESS ACTS L A short timo ago,, the Mail Tribune published an interestintr communication from a Ir.cn I citi zen suggesting that the govern ment could hi' ne fit the public, in the face of the prewnt so-called depression by grinding wheat held by the farm board into flour. This would not cnly provide employ ment but would be an aid in th' solution of aiding the poverty stricken to whom the flour could be given as food. The Mall Tribune sent United States Senator Charles McXary of Oregon a telegram covering the communication, suggesting some action be taken. Yesterday. S e n a t o r McXary wired back and said u bill had ben introduced in eongresn cover ing the proposition. The wire said in part: "A few weeks ago. Senator . Cappi "l Kansas introduced a bill author izing and directing the Federal Karen Hoard to deliver to the Red Cross forty million bushels of wheat to be converted into flour to feed the hungry of the coun try. One- day's hearing was had before the senate committee. Thot further testimony should be taken and 1 referred the matter to a sub-committee which has not yet reported back tuthe full commit ete. it will probably do so In a few Weeks. HIGHLY PLEASING 10 EX-OFFICIALS It seems odd to the former may or, A. W. Pipes, .since his retiiir ment from office the fir.t of the month, to be able to devote all his time to his own interests, andf pot to receive callers practically all day long at his office on Import ant and petty city business mat ters, or answer phone calls relat ing to the same, and betweeji times, chasing down to th city hall to talk over pending mutters with department :'headsf'ir making trips about the city to Investigate proposed improvements. While he enjoy this relief from city responsibility of -the past two years, yet he does not 1om any of his interest In city affairs and probably always will retain a rlose interest. It. II. Hammond, .lames, Collin.-. C. A. Wing and Kugcne Thorndyke. former con noil men' also enjoy their relief from niun!- ipal responsibility and the ability to .spend an tneir nine on uieir own affairs. It Is said that their new freedom is fo enjoyable that unconsciously the majority of them will not go within a block of the "city hall yet for fear of someone buttonholing them in regard to some improvement or other wanted city change. ' The sense of humor of Kx-Mayor Pipes was a great aid to him dur ing hi regime as head of the city when vexatious affairs aroe. and his retiring remarks addressed to tho old council at the end of his long formal public address, made a hit with the departing conferees, eppeially 111 reference to public rns-dng. In this last farewell he wiid in part: "I want to -take thin opportun ity to express to you my appreci ation for your loyalty to a policy which has made the accomplish ments for the past two years pos sible. The program has been yours you have executed it well. "When the community ha ap plAuded wo have shared the hon ors together when they have cuss ed I have borne the Uou'h hare.
