K. 1L Hedrick, city school su per! ntendeni released a statement today calling the attention of voters to the bond election which is set for Thursday, January 1 , at tlie Junior high school from 2:o to ?:Oo p.m. Mr. Hedrick said. "This $26!.. noii bond issue to take care of the .school program was passed by " blf majority on December 1 6. but due to an error in the notice of pu bleat ion our attorneys ad vised that the issue be resubmit ted to the voters so there couUt be no possible clouding of the bond issue which might injure the sale of bonds. This is being done next Thursday. . "The question involved In this election 1 both an educational and a business one. In the first j place, Medford has reached I point where it must take care or tlie school program and 1 do not think anyone acquainted with the present situation doubts that. Our population has more th-in dou bled during the past ten years. It has increased more than one-third since 1 1125. Spare Lacking. "The old junior high school will onlv hold 4MI nupils. There are 770 pupils today who should be boused I here, but who for lack of space are fanned out Into the high school, the armory, and an old church building which the district is compelled to rent. We have two rooms lull of children in a basement where artificial light must be iiwd all day. "This month in our mid-year promotion we have passing from the Junior Into the senior high school about 80 pupils the largest mid-year class we have ever had. and practically none will drop out of the high school at this time. The clasH which enters in Septem ber each year is generally about double that which comes in Janu ary, so one can imagine the sitnn lion next year unless we do some thing before that lime. Now 111 y Itent. "There are also some conside rations on the financial sido which a i-.. tie fur the wale of these old buildings and the construction of n e w o n es. W e are no w p a y I n g out more than $1000 per year rent for outside space besides Its up keep and operation. If tlie old junior high school and the Wash inglc.u school are not disposed of very oon we shall be forced to expend around $10,000 on each one for major repairs such as new roofs some new floors, repainting and the like. We be 1 ie ve t ha t because of the prevailing low building costs it is better to take care of our building this winter and spring. We can save on thin program from 10 per cent to Ki per cent or nearly $30,000 by doing It now rather than waiting until times get back to normal. Hcsidcs it will givo employment to a bit of labor when it is needed. In so far as possible only local labor and local materials will be used. No Deluy Caused. "We have not allowed the fact that we nuitft revote the issue to delay construction a single day. We shall advertise for construc tion bids, on both buildings just as soon as we can get the plans completed by the architects and we are hurrying them as much as possible. 'Although the people have al ready expressed themselves in this matter and we know what 'they want. It nevertheless has to be voted asaln. And this election, as it turns out, is the all-important one. It is quite necessary that we have out a big vole and. I trust that no voter will forget or neglect to come to t he polls Thursday afternoon, January ' from 2;00 to 7:00 p.m., at I be Junior high school."
