Inasmuch as tho fires wero on state fire-protected laud D wight Phlpps, district fire warden and six of his regular crew, left for the scene at once, picking up en route Mr. Ingram, one of the fire war dens stationed at MeCleod bridge. While thp fires, which are burning In good pine ami fir timber, were small when discovered they wero expected to be lyirnlng fiercely and spreading by the time Phlpps and his fire fighters reached them, as there is no road into the locality from the Crater Lake highway and they, had to pack In by foot t'ie four miles, along with their Miovcls, rakes, axes, etc. If word is received from them that the fires have grown large and will bo difficult to control, fire fighting reinforcements will lo dispatched at once along with pack horses bearing equipment. No fur ther word had been received up to early this afternoon. These are the first new fires to be reported for several doys past, either In Crater .National forest or on state protected land. Should tho fires spread Po the other side of the mountain they would havo reached Crater Na tional forest territory, and the forest headquarters would hurry out their ujvn fife fig litem to rein force thh others oh" duty under District Fire Warden Phlpps. EDITOR, CENTRAL POINT-THREATENS TO TAKE ACTION Two months after Helling tho Central Point American und the Jacksonville Post to Kills C. Gait, John K. Shelcy. former owner and editor, still retained possession of several contracts with udvertlsers, und also kept nearly all the re ceipts showing the dates to which subscribers were paid up, Kditor Gall publicly charges today. This is charged by the present editor, who has made insistent re quests several times a week in the last two months that Sheley turn over the contracts und the sub scription receipts. The former owner made excuses and promised to do it "when he got around to It," Gait says. Many subscribers, pleased with the paper as published by the new (editor, called at the office of the paper and offered to pay up their suiwcrjptions. Considerable loss of u.m niis reaiuUod from lho ln!imUty uf thc eililm. to nro(luce 1.,w,l1,1, ,,,.,,..,,,,,,, script Ions are paid up. This in ability has been caused by the fail tire of Sheley to relinquish the receipts, it is charged. On It further charges that one contract with a firm for $1 50 worth of advertising a your, men tioned at the lime the paper changed hands, bus proVen a myth, and that Sheley lias been unable to show that there is such a con tract. Thc present editor denies the Immediate possibility of legal action to obtain the contracts and suhseriplion receipts, but indicat ed that he fully Intended 'to secure them.
