The SIppy Ciet b&cam famous many years ago and is still em : ployed In more or less, modified form by many physicians. Here is an out line of the Sippy diet: Three ounces of a mixture of equal parts of milk and cream 1 1 a. m., 12 m., nt 1, 8, and , 2, 3, "4, 5, 0, 7, 8, It and 10 p. m. -: At 7:30 and every two hours till nnd Including 9:30 give by mouth half teaspoonful of a , mixture of one part bismuth suhcarhonate with three parts of sodium bicarbonate. At 8:30 and every two hours up to and Including 8:30 In the evening give a mixture of mag nesium oxid K) grains with sodlura bicarbonate 10 grains. The great drawback about ,th Sippy diet is that it involves the practice of withdrawing the stom ach contents each evening .two hours after the la-st, powder, to determine the degree of- acidity;, And some physicians like to give the stomach a wash while the tube Is all set there for It. The outline of tho SIppy diet gives a large amount, of alkali, That Is not regnrded as essential today: in fact some good physicians feel that It may bo objectionable tn some cases. , The modern way is to take up the. excessive ncid liv means of the right kind of food. In stead of trying to neutralize it with so much alkali. EXT OF PEPTIC FLCF.R too much digestion. Their diges tive proeesg calls for more food, not less. Their diet must be :i liberal one in some respects, es pecially In foods that acid digests, and foods that tend to inhibit or diminish the secretion of acid. If I had peptic ulcer, or hyper acidity of the stomach from other cause, I believe I should seldom or never resort lo sodium bicarbon ate, or nny of the magnesia nika!!3. I should prefer a dose of calcium carbonate (otherwise known , a prepared chalk), ten grains of which will neutralize ordinary ex cessive stomach acidity for severM hours. Calcium carbonate, unlllu' soda, does not disturb the acid base balance of ihe blood and tis sue. I like to keep my acid-base balance just so; probably it is. in clined on the sour side, don't' you think? yet I dislike the thought of upsetting it unnecessarily. A lor of renders have assured me that five or ten grains of this cnlcium carbonate not only relieves "sour stomach" or heartburn or whatever the acidity may be called, but is an excellent remedy for "gas" In the stomach. All right, we won't quar rel "about that. T run suggesting It merely rs'a comparatively unob jectionable remedy or relief for excessive nrldlty of the stomach. I commend it particularly to peo ple who frequently or habitually re sort to soda. Let the druggist weigh .out nnT give you one ten grain powder of calcium carbon ate.
