INSURANCE FOR OREGON IS TOLD lly tvn V. Reynold, Special A pent Commercial Union Assurance Company,. Portland. About 2,200 persons are enRagcd In writing Mock lire insurance for tho protection of p'roperty owners in Oregon. Counting -each person as representing a family, relatives or dependents to the .number of five, we have approximately 11, 000 pcraorm directly or indirectly concerned in this great industry, exclusive of the thousands whose properties are covered by the in surance written. The number of agents recorded does not mean an equal number of agencie operating in this state. Generally the entire personnel of an insurance agency is licensed to perform the duties of agent. The companies represented by this group pay into the state treas ury, in ordinary and-special taxes, about $175,000 a year. That amount Is far In excess of the requirements of the state insurance department, for whoso support the insurance business is heavily taxed, the re mainder being disbursed In other ways by the state and thus reliev ing tho tax load to that extent. As for tho amount at risk by tho 234 stock fire Insurance companies transacting business in Oregon, this Is around (1,050.000,000.00. This means that if every policy in force were to become payable, a -condition which of course could not hap pen, the companion would be liable for that vast amount of money. It means $1,050,000,000.00 of cover ago, provided by these companies to the property owners of the state and serving as f basis of credit and commercial activity of the brofidcastc haracter. For the United States' the total exceeds 150 billion dollars for 239 stock com panies. In writing this business In Ore gon, the stock companion collect something like SO. 135,000.00 In a year in premiums. Of this, ex penses and losses must bo paid and a certain amount net aside as a re-servo to guarantee the payment Of claims that come lue. The fig ures which I have given apply to fire Insurance only, nnd have noth ing to do with tho windstorm and other forms of insurance written by the stock companies. The industry has n creditable his tory in Oregon. The first stock company to write business In the state was the. Pacific Insurance, company of California, formed about 1865, now out of existence. The fi st company organized In the state Wi's the Oregon ,Piro and Ma rine Intiuraiice company, articles for Its Incorporation having been filed by "VV. S. Ladd, M. S. Burrell. Henry Falling, L. White, Chan. Hodge. C. H. lewls, "William Held. M. W. Fechhcimer nnd Frank lc kum, in 1881. This company re tired from business a few years later. During the succeeding years nu merous companies began business under the laws of tho state. A few oj.' these were domestic companies, but a majority of them were com panies organized in other states doing a nationwide or a worldwide business.
