A fifth I counter was inilirectly the result of a long pass and the others were the result - of plunging, driving football. - The Trojans lift no element of doubt,. jrjo possible out, for their opponents. The uncumfor t a, b ly warm weather, which was expect ed to cut the invaders down after a period or so of play, was ' left with the task of finishing what Coach Jones' men had started.- Defense Shattered The Panthers, with a. quartet of nil-Americans in the lineup, saw the glory of individual perfor mance stolen from them by a group of . S. C. gridHters who shattered the famed Pitt defense with abandon. Toby Uansa, one of these iall A in erica n selections, openetl the conflict with a dazzling (58 yurd end run on the first play following the o poning klckoff. but fleet Rus sell Kaumlert. Saunders' pass to Harry Kdelson caught the Pitt secondary defense flat footed and the Troy halfback scored LY M. Cm. first touchdown. Satisfied with their aorlaj thrusts the Trojans reverted to straight football, with Marshall Duffiold skirting the Panther end for touch downs. Pitt llalllcs Trailing 2ii to 0 as they went Into the second half, the Panthers nitiKtered a rally, going to the air for. u pair of touchdowns. Usansa's pnss to Hill Wallnchus find Harokl Williams' flip to Paul Collins, two of the four completed losses out of tho 19 attempts, were responsible for the eastern eleven's points. These came In the third and fourth periods. KiKuros tell the story of a com plete rout. Tho determined U. S. C. combination turned In 4 5-1 yards compared with 'JS5 for Pittsburgh. Thanks to Usansa's startllm; fix yard run. the team from the Smoky City held the edge in yard age from scrimmage with a 103 total against 107 for the men of f Troy. It was the passing attack which wrote Pittsburgh's doom. South ern California completed half of Its sixteen attempts for 287 yards, while a riuartet of Pitt's 10 efforts netted 87 yards. The invaders were outdowncd 14 to Hr and outpunted 40 yards to 37. Setund Victory , ti The victory of the Trojans was their second in Tournament of Hoses play. In 1023 U. S. C. hand ed Penn State a 14 to 3 beating. Credit Saunders and his substi tute Nuffield, with the burden of the Trojan scoring thrusts, and mark the superb work of Francis Tappnan and Garrett Arbelbide for the defensive play which saw UFan:v turned back time and again without the yardage which had made him an nll-Amerlcan. Coach Jones pouted his reserves Into the fray In Its dying moments, long After the Pahther hopes had been dashed Into oblivion and the shadows of evening were envelop ing the field. When the final gun sounded, the Trojan bench had f been cleaned of Us second, third anil' even fourth team members.
