A. 11. i Grosh, with "several other assocl-1 ates, met in the officer of Vm. j Saunders at Washington, p. (.'., and organized the National Grange. While each of these men had an active part In the organization of our . order, the outstanding figure of the group Is none other than Father Kelly, for It was ho who first conceived the idea of a na tional' cooperative union of farm ers and through his wonderful vi sion and deep sympathy for tho farmers that the grunge had Us in ception. "The declaration of purposes of our order have never been changed and Father Kelly's Idea of co-operation were Incorporated therein for " you may read, 'Wo propose meeting together, buying together, selling together, and,' In general, acting together for our mutual pro tection and advancement as occa sion may require." "Sixty-two years after this was written and made one of the spe cific objects of the grange we have more proof of the soundness of this principle, lor now we are being told by congress, the president, and the more recently appointed farm hoard, that we canot expect to re ceive much benefit from the farm relief bill or any financial aid in marketing until such time as we are organized on sound principles and in good standing. "The government has solicited the co-operation of the grange in organization work and today, as the members of the farm board go from state to state, they preach the' same gospel Hist Father Kelly preached even before there was a grnilge.
