On October 21, 1879, Edison turned the electric current Into a bulb fitted with a filament of carbonized cotton and produced a light that glowed for forty hours. That lamp was the parent of the efficient lights of today. From It Edison' has developed so much to aid 'humanity thut last year he was presented with a congression al gold medal. - At the presenta tion Calvin Coolldge, as President of the United States, paid him this tribute-. ' The picture shows Mayor R. AV. Pipes and Mrs. Pipes upon their return to earth after having, en joyed the first flight. The Travelair plane was piloted by Jimmy Purintnn and brought Mis. Pipes' biggest thrill, accord ing to a statement she made upon alighting and was so enthusiastic that slie is looking forward to taking a long air trip of several hundred miles. The Copper King Service Is managed by .1. W. Brown and Mr. Automobiles will no longer be nbln to get out in the tracks and bold up the trolleys on the Ninth East street line In Salt Lake City. Trolleys on that route hereafter will be trackless, on rubber tires, and able to maneuver In traffic. The Utah Light and Traction company, which already, has some trolley abuses in. service, has been given permission by the city com mission and the state public utilities- commission to remove the tracks from the Ninth East street route,', pave over the old right-of-way, and supply a considerably speeded Bervlce with trolley buses. The increased acceleration af forded by a new type of control, the greatly decreased weight of the unit, and the ability to maneu ver e.jgh.1; or nine feet from the side "of the overhead trolley In passing obstructions .or reaching the curb, are among the factors contribut ing to the faster schedule speeds Which will be obtained with the nuw trnllev hllses. , ,- ;.. DEPARTMENT TO INSTALL 400 LIGHTS Addition thousands of miles of 24-hour airways routes so mark ed that flying is no longer a dawn-to-dusk enterprise are to bo put In service by the United States department of commerce, which Is to Install 400 additional airway beacons at intervals of ten miles each along the new light routes. The 24-ln. beans, each of 2,000, 000 candlepower, rotate six tinies per minute. Each tower Is equip ped with two course lights in ad dition to the beacon, the lights pointing in the direction of the nlrway and flashing In code to Indicate the number of the beacon r along Us particular route. If there is no landing field at the beacon, the courso lights have red lenses; green lenses are reserved for use at airports and Intermediate land ing fields. - . ' The electric industry has been built upon Edison's discoveries: No other industry owes Its Inspira tion and progress so . completely and overwhelmingly to the out standing genius of one man. ... Edison blazed tile trail not only through his Inventions, but also through their application to every day life. The world is .as much in debt to Edison for working out the complicated details of the first electric light system as for his dis covery of the Incandescent lamp. .. Basically, the methods of sup plying light and power to the public are the same tuday In the modern electric system as those which he developed In the old Pearl street plant. ' - Furthermore, the work of elec trifying the United States has to a large extent fullen upon the shoul ders of men who were trained by Edison in the pioneer nays, and today many of these men are still active in the development of the industry. :' N It Is no exaggeration to say that, considering the contribution which electricity has made to mass prn- Purinton Is chief pilot.
