The investiga tion will be one of the most com prehensive cost stutties ever made. It Is planned to obtain reports from about 5UU farmers each year, distributed approximately 300 In the Willamette valley, 100 in the coast regions, and loo In eastern Oregon. In honor of the day on which 'hrititopher Columbus discovered this country, all of the court house offices were closed except that of the county health unit, as were also the city treasurer's and city recorder's offices and the courts, but the federal departments were open as usual, as were the Medford banks which up until a year or so ago. always observe I Columbus day by closing all day. The local banks closed at noon, as always on Saturday, but the Ashland banks were closed all day. Outside of this closing there was no formal observance of the day in Medford. Yesterday after noon Columbus Day programs were observed En the public school along with the usual routine work. Salem placed second in Hie pre liminary contest and probably would have won first; in the opin ion of Attorney L'haney, hud they been costumed in a more military uniform. As far as musk? was con cerned, it was generally agreed that Salem wus of c.'nnipioii.iliiij caliber. The Oregon delegation, under the chairmanship of Hen Don-in, did much in the election of O. L. Hadeuhammer of Little Hock, Ark., for nationul commander, said Mr. Chaney, explaining that Oregon delegates met every evening at 5::iu comparing reports of progress in pushing Kodeuhammer to the fore. The convention parade was an awe inspiring spectacle and took six hours to pass a given point. The state department of Massachusetts alone had parade entries over an hour long. Oregon was 22nd in line, taking last place in keeping with Hs membership standing in the organization.
