Objective. of the study as set

MEDFORD PEARS MEDFORD BOASTS
APPRECIATED ; IS BIG CANDY HOUSE
GHANEY'S REPORT! BUT FEW KNOW !T
Medt'unl pears , made a big hit
ut the national American Legion
convention ut Iouisvillu, Ky., and
Oregon was the onlv state to hold
j open house, according to Attorney
Newton C. Chauey, who returned
yesterday with Mrs. Chaney from
the convention city.
He reported that the Salem drum
corps, under the leadership of Lloyd
Williamson of Medford, 111 is Bed the
national championship by a trac
tion or one point, taking filth
place, competition being ho close.
Salem placed second in Hie pre
liminary contest and probably
would have won first; in the opin
ion of Attorney L'haney, hud they
been costumed in a more military
uniform. As far as musk? was con
cerned, it was generally agreed
that Salem wus of c.'nnipioii.iliiij
caliber.
The Oregon delegation, under
the chairmanship of Hen Don-in,
did much in the election of O. L.
Hadeuhammer of Little Hock, Ark.,
for nationul commander, said Mr.
Chaney, explaining that Oregon
delegates met every evening at 5::iu
comparing reports of progress in
pushing Kodeuhammer to the fore.
The convention parade was an awe
inspiring spectacle and took six
hours to pass a given point. The
state department of Massachusetts
alone had parade entries over an
hour long. Oregon was 22nd in
line, taking last place in keeping
with Hs membership standing in
the organization.
Oregon was the only stato that
gave out free fifult, Jerked fish, and
other products at the headquarters
in the Brown hotel, which was
j crowded day and night with visit
ors liojii all parts of the United
I States, bringing valuable publicity
j to Oregon and the west (Mast.
1 While en route home Mr. and
j .Mrs. Chaney visiter the former's
j home at Cleburne, Texas, where
; his mother is seriously ill nnd not
expected to long survive. It was
principally because of her illness,
lie said, thai he made the trip.
