BEDFORD'S TELEPHONE SITUATION HOLDING ii tlie local tclciilmuc frnnt'liise is nno of those t bines thut will probiibly do no barm, but we fenr will tio no Rood. We re informed by members of the city council that they found the franchise satisfactory, but they favored holding it up on the theory that such net ion would spur the company to im prove the quality of its service. This may be true, but such improvement will at best be only temporary. Kor if the franchise is satisfactory, it will soon be signed, and then the situation will be precisely the same as if the contract had been sicned in the first place, the time lost will have served no useful purpose, WE feel it would have been better sense, nnd better for both parties concerned, if each factor in the transaction bad been decided on its merits. Hy that, we mean if, after careful study, the Council found nnthinu; to criticize in the franchise, then it should have been accepted in the regular way. If on the other hand, if investiga tion showed that the service of the company bad not been satis factory, then this matter, too, should have been acted upon in the regular way. AND the regular way would have been to draw up a list of complaints and file them with the Stalo Public, Service Commission. , For only by such action can relief be obtained. Tbe Public Service Commission, lias power lo order changes or improve- j ments in the telephone company. The City Council hasn't. For i the Council to hold up a franchise that is satisfactory, because it believes tbe service under that, franchise ISN'T, simply eon- fuses the entire issue, and delays that satisfactory settlement and understanding which both parties no doubt, desire. THIS paper probably uses the telephone service as exten sively as any business in Mcdford, both in local and long distance calls. This service has not, been perfectly satisfactory at all times, no phone service is, but as a whole, and through a long period of years, we have had little cause for complaint. When something has gone wrong we have, always taken the matter up directly with local headquarters, and have invariably been met with courtesy and a sincere desire to remedy what ever defects existed. Ot'lt expeuienco may not be typical. In fact, we don't know just what the criticisms are, or from what directions they come. - . , ?ut if as snino members of tbe Council maintain the serv. ice is so poor that some action is DK.MANDKD; then, as pointed out above, wo believe, the sensible thing to do is proceed in the regular way draw up a formal bill of particulars nnd filo the same with the Public Service Commission. If it isn't so poor, if tho shortcomings arc only thoso in herent in a growing and complicated business, and conditions in Med ford compare favorably with thoso in other cities of the state, then let the facts be known, so that tho telephono com pany 'may go on with its improvements, nnd the people may turn to the solution oT more pressing problems. . IT IS LODGFS nro getting their winter's activities under way. Young folks are wooing Terpsichore again. There is a smell of camphor in many homes as cedar chests are being opened up. New radios are being installed. Study circles are resuming. There is hot competition around the rending lamp for possession of the home town paper. Bridge is still played. There is some demand for corn poppers. The ice man looks a little glum, but the electric light meter render wears a smile like a split watermelon as he sets down the figures. It has been a wonderfully fine summer with more than usual opportunities for outdoor enjoyments, bifeause of the unbroken sunshine which continued for so long. Hut. it will be fine to have the fall rains, too, and Inter the uip of frost and perhaps n sprinkle of snow. ,lust as one of tbefinetbings about going a way from homo is to come back there, sp one of the fine things about n prolonged suniiiver is that finally we come to to its end and to normal change. Seasons lend variety nnd prevent mo notony. And each of them in Mcdford is enjoyable. . SUPPORT THE FOOTBALL TEAM S seasons change, so do fortunes nent in the "dunce of life." For many years Mcdford has cheered n championship foot ball leant. Last year the very apogee wan renched, when Mcd ford not only won the state chiiinpionship, but in our opinion had the best High School football team in the country. That team has gone, vanished in thin tiir, one might say. So has the coach who was so largely responsible for such a sen sational record. Mcdford bus a new coach, also a new team and a green one. We don't believe this team is going to be any "set-up." 1'nlcss we aro greally mistaken, it is going to give a good ac count of itself. Hut nnything like the record of last year or tho five previous years is impossible, as impossible, one might say, as fresh roasting oars at Christmas, has changed. For WH demonstrated we could properly support n champion, ship team, t'oubl be goml winners. Now let us demon strate we can support a team that doesn't expect to win any championship that when ami if -we nre defeated, we can also be COOD LOKKKS. Football is one of the best outdoor games ever invented far too good to rentier victories essential to entbusiiiNtie public support. So we hope the fans of yesteryear will nlso be tbe fans of l!tL'!). Show this new coach anil these new boys we lire behind them, regardless of the score board. That's the proper spirit. And incidentally that is the way to build up a team that will return Metlfonl to the champion ship season a few years hence. A lamb satisfied the old-fashioinjl Mnry. Hut the now-fnsh. ioiied Mary isn't content unless she gets your goat. . What a country! .
