Cliipman ( Awaociated Presa Sporta Writer) - If the American loaguo only wer composed of Junt the Hen- iJ utora and the Athletics, life would be nothing but a long, sweet dream for the hireling of Prof. CornelluB McOilllcuddy. The aaplr injc Mackinen have played at a .650 clip ngalnnt tlio either six clubs, but have a vent Red a neat .91i3 against Walter Johnaon's en- itry, which many picked to win the i(- Barnard pennant. Their record is J" 13 out of 20 against the league in general, 12 out of 13 agulnst their Washington cousins. $ Tho Athletics shifted the scene "3 to the Capital City yesterday to jfi flhnde the Senators by 4 to for j the eleventh straight Philadelphia jf victory, nine of which have neon 2 at the expense of the selfsame jf Senators. f The victory maintained the Ath letics comfortably ahead of their field, four games in front of the BrownH, who shaded Cleveland by 1 to 0, and five and one-half, to tho fore of the Yankees and the Tigers, who rested Jn a virtual tie for third place. Old Red Fnber applied the one-hit treatment to the Tigers in Chicago to win by fki 9 In n n'u Iha Vnnlrnau u-nnt rin n q pree in Boston to halt tho Ked !j Sox by 15 to 4. Babe Ruth's ninth home run i was the crowning blow In a 16-hlt ; assault which the champions ;v5 showered upon the MeBsrs. Kd "I Morris, Ed Di uhani, Kd Carroll, Billy Bayne and Jack Russell. I "Watte Hoyt was doing very well ; with the New York pitching until he became involved in a heated vj debate with Air.' Richard Nallin. r' the umpire. Hoyt spent tho rest ' of the afternoon in the club house ij wondering whether he would get J credit for the pitching victory, t'Whtch he did. Ol The game marked the first ap "jearance of the Yankees upon j ; Braves field, which the Red Sox use for Sunday games because of its advantage over the; Fenway in seating capacity. , RIp"Callins scattered seven In dian hits to win over Willis Budlln by 1 to 0 on only five safe blows by his St. Louis comrades. Blue's gj uoume anu Aianusn s single in tne eighth settled the argument, leav ing tho Browns In a tiircatenlnir $ position. The Pirates definitely Inserted :J themselves into the National league fight, far the moment at any event, by taking both ends of j u double-header from the Cardl js nals at Sportsman's park. The scores were 12 and 8 and 7 to 5. with Burleigh Grimes stampeding ,j to the aid of faltering Pittsburgu 'a pitchers in each engagement. The i Cubs, aided by a Hurnsby home l run, had little difficulty In turn ij Ing back the Reds by 6 to 11 ut $ Chlc'ago. j The Salmth resutts In the Na '! tlonal league left tho Cubs louri ng Ing the Cardinals by a msi-gin of S,un full game, repi'osented by a flfferonce of two in the losing olumn this In spite of two de I feats in three days for the bruins I in St. Louis. The Pirates rested only one and rwie-half games be .' hind the Cubs, half a game to the V roar of the champion Cardinals, j The rest of the league remained I below the .500 mark, despite the fifth consecutive victory of the !j Oiants. who stopped the Braves by -' IB to 8 at the Polo grounds. The Robins" completed t'.ic Na- tlonal league program by cleaning .si up their third straight over tho S Phillies. 5 to 4. ' I Km irz by Charles G.BootK . Ten thousand in gold and cash were stolen from Mr. Joe l-umly s safe enrly this morning. This Is the fourth of a series of thefts and hold-ups in Lundy's Place in the past three months, and it is by far the largest amount yet taken. The town Is in a fine state when a man cannot conduct a respectable busi ness venture without being subject outrages of this sort, and the Firebrand calls on Deputy Sheriff Hillings to do his duty. The Fire brand has It on good authority that Mr. Lundy has brought an expert from San Francisco to see what's what; nnd he has ordered his men to shoot to kill! I C1en rnjtn wanted at th Mall Tribune office! If light on conditions of that day, but nothing more, apparently, and why it should occur to mo that there might be a connection between Mr. Lundy's misfortune and Andrew's death I couldn't for the Hfo of mo tell. But the notion had got Into my head and there It stuck., ', "Listen to this, Henry." I read! the Item to him. "Pity the poor devil If they found i him." he muttered grimly. "Tor-! ridity was one wild town from what! I hear." . . ! Of my feeling that the item! might have bearing upon the mat ter whith occupied our minds I said nothing. Henry Is intolerant of feelings. Pitchfork Canyon, to which we presently came, had lost none of h grim terror, but we managed the ascent without disaster In something under two hours. It was three o'clock when wo reached Hun Felipe. Deacon dropped mo at a downtown corner, muttering some thing about seeing inn later. He hod been in a gloomy mood ever since we left Torrldlty and I had attributed it to hWt bewildered state of mind. Henry had been" so sure of certain things, regretfully sure, It Is true, but sure, nevertheless, and our discoveries had shaken his conclusions more than ho had ad mitted. Needless to say, his per plexity had delighted me and I had let him alcne. Hailing a taxi. T settled Into It, keenly anticipating tho Joyful re union before me. I had expected Deacon to insist on driving me home and I was relieved when ho didn't, for I wanted tho children to mvttelf. My longing for n sight of Lucy's Lce had become almost a physicarachc and I could hardly Hit still on my seat. Lucy had come to me as a little thing, but I had never dreamed that she would ever fill my heart as completely as she did. One of these days I won hi lose her. The realization twisted my heart, but I knew I could rec oncile myself to It. Jerry was a fine lad, too. Jf only Andrew had lived to see th flowering of these young liven: But he hadn't and we had Mill to clap a rope around the nefk of the devil who had killed him. Well, in a little while now. surely . , . I began to think nf what we'd have to say to one another, Jerry and Lucy and I. What with Jer ry's mad flight to Torrldlty, Lucy's dnAng pursuit of hiin, my own ex-! perlences In the town, and the dis coveries Deacon and I hud made in the mine, we'd have enough to keep 'Oir tongues wagging until mld inght. Mrs. Moffil met me at the door. "Where is Lucy?" I demanded, pushing Into the house. "I don't know, Mr. Peebles. I haven't heard u word of her since ( went 'to Circle Sunday morning. Nor you, neither. Nor Mr. Jerry. And what with the fiouse being hroken into and your lovely door ruined simply ruined and thr police doing nothing about It " "Not here! Not here!" I shouted. "Xnnen?e, unman! Of course they j are here!" I "Indeed they are not!" sh wept hysterically. "And" 1 haven't en Miss Lucy sipco Sunday niomihK- Brushlng her out of the den, I went to my bedroom and began to prepare for my bath. But my mind was still In a ferment of apprehen sion; at moments,- actual dread pos sessed me. Should I start out io look for them at once? Should I ralso a general alarm? Or should 1 leave It entirely to Deacon? When 1 found myself standing in the bath tub with my shoes on I derided It was time I made up my mind. I would plvo them "until noon to morrow. If they hadn't turned up then Pd start back for Torrldlty In a hired car. Cleansed of the grit of Skull Val ley, I got Into clean linen and a fresh suit. I was fumbling for my billfold In. the right-hand hip pock et of the trousers J had taken oif when my blood suddenly turned cold In my veins. My blllinhl was there right enough, but there vh,h something else with it, tho stulHtor smoothness of which scored my hand s If It were a hot Iron !h;it I held instead of a playing curd, the nee of spades.
