Fifteen well j known hills in the area around Han Francisco were topped in high j gear as a part of the Durant rec- t ord makins week program.'' Driven by men whose experience I In motor car demonstrations was ' limited to thnt required in their daily work as members of local Durant dealer organization. Many Durant dealers in other flection have wired to tne Durant factory the rfsuliH of outstanding performances. Among them ait from Arizona, where all former rec ords were shattered in a run from Phoenix to Roosevelt dam and re turn over the famous Apache trail, and a high gear climb over the nationally known Fish Creek hill. From Butte, Mont., comes word of a series qf demonstrations never before wfesed in the intermolin tnln territory. Brake tests, accele ration ' performances, and hill climbs featured the events in that eliy. . The Pilots of the Goodrich Silver Fleet found the smoothest and broadest highway of their Ion? nation-wide tcur when two of (heir cars were hoisted onto the flylvif? deck of the navy's giant airplane carrier, Sara toga, in Los Angeles harbor recently. Only the regular aircraft lifting facilities employed by tlte navy were used for this novel expedition. A mine sweeper swung the cars from the dock to a barge -vhich was towed alongside the Saratoga. Here, the giant seaplane derrick hoisted the cars on board. WASHINGTON (vP) A device intended to permit airplanes to drop and pick up bans of mail while in flight, wnich if successful is expected to stimulate progress of the air mail, is to be tested on. the .Pittsburgh-Cleveland ,Hir''?! mall . v'o'Ute. -: ' ; j The 'device will bo npproved by the department for installation on tho air mail routes throughout the country If the tests prove its fenst . hility. It would permit airplanes J to fly at a speed of 100 miles an nour or more wnne 1:1c nars were i delivered or taken on. This would mean a postal c:erk on all through planes to sort and' distribute mall. A two-fold process is Involved j in ine uevice, wnicn was invenieu by L. S. Adams of San Francisco. The mail bags would be picked up or dropped from the plane by a 75-foot light steel cable which would be attached to an automatic winding wheel under tho plane's fuselage. On the landing field the device consists of a two-sided light steel framewor, 20 feet higher, of a funnel shape, which would he joined together at one end and with an open end CO feet wide. The funnel device on the field would have a canvas bottom which would prevent the dropped mall from hitting the ground or being damaged. The mail bag to be picked up would be placed on a small platform at the closed end of the funnel. The bag itself in both processes would he attached to a small round Iron ball oh the ! end of the cable. Flying at an altitude of less than j 100 feot, the pilot would guide the mail bag dangling on tho cables into the 60-foot opening of the funnel. "When the bag strikes the closed end of the funnel it would be automatically released from the i ro n ba 1 1 and would d ro p to the canvas bottom. After the bag was relexsed, the Iron ball would enter a slot de vice at the funnel's end In which it would catch into tho mail con- lj tainer to be picked up. This mail bag as son as It was attached z would be shot upwards from theirs platform by a catapult. The lf weight of the mail- bag on the 1 cable would place in operation 1 ziz automatically the winding wheidjs which would elevate It to the : iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Sl Are Gluttons moderate Mini.
