Chintz lips soon followed, covering the dark, dull sofa and heavy looking i-nairs, pcue unu Dec&tne fashion able for waJle, and light woodwork was adopted. Last perhaps, of the Important features of room decora tion to yield to the new Influence nave oeen floors. These, too, are now being: painted and decorated. Coial. green, blue and yellow are colors that are widely used In bed rooms; green, yeiiow, grav and tan In sunparlois. Kven the living loom has not been excepted. Here fbony or else soma gay painted fin ish Is now In keeping with tbe style of decoration, titencll borders and corner stencil designs make more complete the reversion of the fashion of decorated flood. Special Finish tc- Ma pi At first color u f. fhlfw; for the oid-fashtc.e I Ve Wd and cthe. softwood f. o". Laltiy, however, fl-i'j 5..t tar a 'itte re sisted the Innovation u o-r tin ned to receive nattr' have yielded to Its Inf'nen. some of the woods, wnlc: v'r .t 'jn do not have a sironjy figured grain, special finishes have been devised to enhance the wood beauty nnd at the same time to supply the demand for color. Among these several finishes 1s tin unueually attractive one for maple flooring, a treatment which reveals the beauty of the wood Kiain, providing an enduring floor and a herd-wearing finish in color. While the effeot Is quite unusual, there Is nothing complicated about the ptocesa of finishing. AfUr the floor has been cleaned, and dark spots bleached If ncces fai y, a slain Is applied. The brush !ijK In done In the direction of the vood grain, that Is, parallel to the I oardn, ancl the surface gone over a ttecond time without putting any moro utaln on the brush. When the floor has dried; thoroughly,' which will require from six to 12 hours, it la sanded and dusted. Applying Laoqner Next, a specially prepared cleat lacquer Is applied to soften the tone of the stain color. Lacquer Is "flowed" on rather than being; stroked back and forth. Lacquer drift) quickly and may be sandpa pered at the end of two or three hours. Two coats of special varn ish are then applied, - This flalsh has a certain richness of tono which makes It pleasing , for any room, and the stains come In a variety of shades and colors to Kult every style of decoration. The brown stains of deep tones are designed especially for a Spanish Interior, while those of lighter shades suit an early American room. The ' autumn brown, which has a reddish tint, Is in keeping with modern furnishing. Silver gray, dove gray, royal blue, pastel green and orchid arc a few of ttu many popular colors. - Many home owners have or plan to have beautiful maple flooring which they do not want to conceal with an opaque coating. Yet the charm of colorful treatments has not escaped their attention. To them t!ie new finishes for hard i wood floors will be most welcome, i for they make possible the rare combination of wood beauty and I color. Copyright 1U23. The Archt-J j tect's Small House Service Bureau ! of the United States, Inc. i Five RoomJSungalow That Can Grow II' ' i Imm Bt ROOK I nTi'nrlP 1 nvmcteon j l , , 6tP K03M t J mm Type Is Most po'pulaA of "American, Smaller Homes, j PEOPLE say: "Give us five room bungalows." Very well, here la one. We give It the designation of 3-E-4, but home builders will know it aa "the beautiful little bungalow with & close roof and a big living room." Home builders probably do not realizft that this kind of bouse is one of the hardest of the small house types that the architect has to struggle with. Because they go on narrow lots they hava to be narrow, and, because they have five rooms all on one floor, they have to be long. That makes it bard to arrange an effective front. We have one here. It la not cluttered up with gee-gaws, It Is not over elaborated with meaningless do- , tails that would add only to the ex- a pensc. ii" Home builders must study this plan through to see Its virtues. First there Is a terrace an open one surrounded by a wrought iron rail. It could have a canopy over it. Then there Is the large living room, 20 feet In. length, with the fl replace along one side, and three sets of windows a triple one in front Directly to the rear, through a cased opening, Is the dining room. This Is offset from the plan to form a kind of bay. It also has a battery of wide windows. Beyond Is the kitchen with the sink, under a window, drain board and working space at each side, as well as cupboard space above and below. To the rear is a dining alcovo and a rear porch,- On the other side of the house are two bedrooms with bath between, with closet space that Is unusually generous. From the bathroom hallway a stairway leads to the attic space where It Is possible to get an extra bedroom and fine storage space. Construction: Wood frame, exterior finish siding. Shingles or stucco may be used. Lot size: Approximately 35 feet '" i Designed to face: South or east. May be reversed for other facings. , ' Complete working plana may be obtained for this and other designs shown In this series. For further Information sea editor's note. -. Design No. ff-A'-J. Small House Service Bureau of the United States, Inc. Unclose a stamped addressed envelope, Q I am planning to remodel my home, adding three rooms at the rear. The front part la Colonial with central hallway and with living room on one side, dining room and kltcbea on the other. I am sending a sketch of what I want to do. Pleaee give me your advice as to the changes. A We are sure you will be wis to employ an architect.- It Is going to be very difficult to get what you want- done without having - ade quate plans compiled by bomeone who knows the facts of your wishes and the present condition of your home. Your fine old Colonial house ma? be ruined by injudicious guess ing at long distance. .The cost of the architect's services will be more than made up In the extra value you will get. Q Please advise the best way ' to finish Georgian pine in na- I tural wood. , A There are almost countless ways to do this as the wood takes stain well. The choice depends upon what sort of effect is desired. The weathered finish Is a satis factory one. appreciated by many. This may be lacquered, waxed, or fif.ished in flat varnish. Get your paint dealer to show samples. Q I would like to know where I can get Information on rammed earth houses. Are they batlsfactory in the north? A Rammed earth houses In any climate excepting like that of New Mexico, Arizona or Southern Cali fornia are not practical. A special technique of building Is required and a considerable amount of Up keep to prevent the surfacea from weathering. Address the Depart ment or Commerce, Washington, D. C, for further Information. Q In the linoleum floor la the kitchen there are a number of worn spots which go through the paint pattern. Can these places be repaired? If so, pleajv t suggest a method. A Worn spots in printed linoleums cannot be repaired except by replacing these areas with new linoleum. A coat of varnish over tbe whole floor will reduce wear. You would probably be well advise , to contemplate replacement with in laid or jaspc linoleum, which reta' t their patterns until the linoleum is worn completely through. q Outside of being; orna ' mental, Is there any value in a fireplace? With a furnace in ,v the house, what sort of fuel ' would be practical in the fire- . ' place, assuming It Is used at all? I Are modern fireplaces arranged so that circulation can be shut , off? What about tta efficiency f , as a means of ventilation? ' A This Is a common question,; We would list the advantages of fireplace as follows: It is highly ornamental, perhaps more so than any other feature of the hoase.- It has sentimental qualities,' giving the home a certain spirit which everyone enjoys. It adds resale values. As to the heating value of the ordinary fireplace, this Is imma terial excepting on mild days or during periods when It Is excessive ly cold. For the latter burn coal In a metal basket, otherwise burnt wood, A fireplace serves well a ventilating device, which may De controlled by installing meta dam- per a In the throat. ; An Easy Way to BUILD Your Home Our free service to those ambitious to own a home of their own includes the following ' steps: ' .
