devised to enhance the wood beauty

Among these several finishes 1s
tin unueually attractive one for
maple flooring, a treatment which
reveals the beauty of the wood
Kiain, providing an enduring floor
and a herd-wearing finish in color.
While the effeot Is quite unusual,
there Is nothing complicated about
the ptocesa of finishing.
AfUr the floor has been cleaned,
and dark spots bleached If ncces

the floor has dried; thoroughly,'
which will require from six to 12
hours, it la sanded and dusted.
Applying Laoqner
Next, a specially prepared cleat
lacquer Is applied to soften the tone
of the stain color. Lacquer Is
"flowed" on rather than being;
stroked back and forth. Lacquer
drift) quickly and may be sandpa
pered at the end of two or three
hours. Two coats of special varn
ish are then applied,

of tono which makes It pleasing ,
for any room, and the stains come

The brown stains of deep tones are
designed especially for a Spanish
Interior, while those of lighter
shades suit an early American
room. The ' autumn brown, which
has a reddish tint, Is in keeping
with modern furnishing. Silver
gray, dove gray, royal blue, pastel
green and orchid arc a few of ttu
many popular colors. -
Many home owners have or plan
to have beautiful maple flooring
which they do not want to conceal
with an opaque coating. Yet the
charm of colorful treatments has
not escaped their attention. To
them t!ie new finishes for hard
i wood floors will be most welcome,

PEOPLE say: "Give us five room
bungalows." Very well, here la
one. We give It the designation of
3-E-4, but home builders will know
it aa "the beautiful little bungalow
with & close roof and a big living
room."
Home builders probably do not
realizft that this kind of bouse is
one of the hardest of the small
house types that the architect has
to struggle with. Because they go
on narrow lots they hava to be
narrow, and, because they have five
rooms all on one floor, they have
to be long. That makes it bard
to arrange an effective front. We
have one here. It la not cluttered
up with gee-gaws, It Is not over
elaborated with meaningless do- ,
tails that would add only to the ex- a
pensc. ii"
Home builders must study this
plan through to see Its virtues. First
there Is a terrace an open one
surrounded by a wrought iron rail. It could have a
canopy over it. Then there Is the large living room,
20 feet In. length, with the fl replace along one side,
and three sets of windows a triple one in front
Directly to the rear, through a cased opening, Is
the dining room. This Is offset from the plan to form
a kind of bay. It also has a battery of wide windows.
Beyond Is the kitchen with the sink, under a window,
drain board and working space at each side, as well
as cupboard space above and below. To the rear is
a dining alcovo and a rear porch,-
On the other side of the house are two bedrooms
with bath between, with closet space that Is unusually
generous.
From the bathroom hallway a stairway leads to
the attic space where It Is possible to get an extra
bedroom and fine storage space.
Construction: Wood frame, exterior finish siding.
Shingles or stucco may be used.
Lot size: Approximately 35 feet '"

ways to do this as the wood takes
stain well. The choice depends
upon what sort of effect is desired.
The weathered finish Is a satis
factory one. appreciated by many.
This may be lacquered, waxed, or
fif.ished in flat varnish. Get your
paint dealer to show samples.
Q I would like to know
where I can get Information on
rammed earth houses. Are they
batlsfactory in the north?
A Rammed earth houses In any
climate excepting like that of New
Mexico, Arizona or Southern Cali
fornia are not practical. A special
technique of building Is required
and a considerable amount of Up
keep to prevent the surfacea from
weathering. Address the Depart

A Worn spots in printed
linoleums cannot be repaired except
by replacing these areas with new
linoleum. A coat of varnish over
tbe whole floor will reduce wear.
You would probably be well advise ,
to contemplate replacement with in
laid or jaspc linoleum, which reta' t
their patterns until the linoleum is
worn completely through.
