If diphtheria or tu well known eva- j bercle bacilli, for example, retain sive answers to the query, "Well, then, what is one to do for anemia ir iron won't help it?" when the bell rang and we knocked off work'for the day, For fear no one will remember clearly. I wish to affirm that I did think of a snappy last line, to-wit, "con sult your physician." but, believe It or not, I restrained that impulse and let the reader down gently enough by replying Instead. "How did you get that way how do you know' you're anemic? If you are quite sure about it,- what caused the condition?" And there, pale people, is the nub of Ihe question. You see there is only a good teaspoonful of Iron in all tho bloo din a healthy adult's body. There Is seldom if ever any shortage or iron if! our ordlnary dally food. So if one does develop anemia, a weakening of the strength ot tho blood, it Ls pretty certainly not from lack of iron. It follows, then, that oner can scarcely hope to remedy ' the trouble by pouring In more iron, in medicinal , or food' form. That Is the orin-' scrt that Iron is worthless as remedy for anemia. Of course I am aware that Jhis In almost heresy, but I have fear that any physician can 'suc cessfully controvert the belief I ex press. Formerly I myself .earncxt ly believed that certain medicinal preparations of Iron, properly made ind administered, were almost a specific cure for a certain type of anemia, und X ho practiced. But I um pretty sure I was wrong about that, nnd I am equally confident hat the physicians who still, har bor such belief are wrong, too. Dut' I can't prove It Is wrong. You can't prove a negative. - I only know that the particular "type of anemia for which I once believed Iron a specific cure will respond Just as quickly to treatment without any Iron at all. Why have n doctor nt all, if you nro going to et your own Judgment, or any hody'tt eke. up against his, on .nch a matter? To my mind the prize Idiot Is the person who consults a physician and then fails to follow tho physician's ndvice and instruc tions faithfully.
