Marly ships had but one mast atid sail, but the later ones had three mast.;, each , with a big sail. The sail at the stern, called a lateen sail, was triangu lar in shape. All sails were fas tened to ya rds t ha t h u ng cross wise of the masts. On many Un man ships the main yard, or yard on the middle mast, was curved in shape. Tlie.se ships were nil dec orated elaborately, with fancy de- signs at bow and stern. They were steered by an oar over the, stern, or hanging1 over the left side near the stern.
