The early vessels: were mostly
crescnt shaped, hh;h at the bow
and stern. They had beaks or rams I
at the bow for use in running tluw
and sinking other ships. The musts,
spars and sails were all' removed
In a fiht, and the principal means
of propelling the ship was by the
oars. These oars were arranged
In one, two or three "banks." The
space between the sides was not
decked over and the rowers sat
on benches exposed to the weather.
A walk ran down the middle of the
ship from bow to stern, where the
slave-drivers walked with whips to
encourage the rowers,
and storn were small decks for the
fighting men, and at the stern was
a canopy, deck house or tent for
the commander. Marly ships had
but one mast atid sail, but the later
ones had three mast.;, each , with
a big sail. The sail at the stern,
called a lateen sail, was triangu
lar in shape. All sails were fas
tened to ya rds t ha t h u ng cross
wise of the masts. On many Un
man ships the main yard, or yard
on the middle mast, was curved in
shape. Tlie.se ships were nil dec
orated elaborately, with fancy de-
signs at bow and stern. They were
steered by an oar over the, stern,
or hanging1 over the left side near
the stern. Some had an our on
each side of the stern. These oars
were much larger and heavier than
the rowing oars. The sails wei e
usually colored and decorated.
