the evening session to order at 8
o'clock promptly. It was at this
session that the contests in ritual
istic work was held, the winners
of which will compete in a state
contest at the Grand Lodge at. Sa
lem October 8, 0 and 10. W. H.
Iiowden of Alpha No. 47 of Rose
burg was the winner in the friend
ship; George Ross of Myrtle No. 3
of Marshfieid was the winner in
the monitor contest and K. F. Gore
of Talisman Lodge No. HI of Med
ford was the winner in the sixth
senator contest. Other contestants
were A, L. Whipple. lOu-gene; Geo.
Alexander, MarshfiId; .las. Stew
art, Medford; Fred Moore. Marsh
field; Walter Camming.1;, Corvallis.
These represented the different
districts of the southern half of
the giand domain of Oregon.
The contest was followed by ex
ceptionally interesting addresses bv
Grand Chancellor Judge Morrow,
G. K. of U. and S. Walter G. Glea
sou and Grand Vice Chancellor
Stanton Rowell. Mr. Gleason re
ported that the Oregon-Washington
Pythian home at Vancouver, Wash.,

The next district convention will
he held in Grants Pass in the
spring.
WILD BEE HUNTING
IS
IN ROGUE VALLEY
Roe-tree hunting is becoming
a popular sport fnnd industry of
this valley, and its chief follower
is Charles lM-uitt. of this city, who
so far this year, bus harvested
10 bee-trees, and has as many
more "s-potted." Saturday, while
removing honey, the wild bees
fought back ferociously, and stung
Rruitt in divers places, ami his
assistant on the end of a finger.
The present spell of hot weather
has caused a suspension of ac
tivity as the honey melts, beneath
the rays of the sun, and spoils its
commercial value. Wild honey is
in brisk demand, however, anil
i:ells for slightly mote than the
tame honey price. It is reported
as being "larruping good" on pan
( .ikes.
According to Prnitt. the wild
bee is a more assidioiis worker
than his civilized in-other, does
a better .tub of houcy-nuiklng. and
puts it up in slabs weighing from
la lo LTi pounds. The hive of a
wild bee is usually the hollow of
an old tree, located in an inac
cessible spot, as far as humans
are concerned.
There is considerable skill at
tached lo bee tree hunting, and
gathering the fruits of the insects,
according to Rruitt.
The wild bee is a bee, who has
wandered from his hive, and
banded with other bees. In the
spring of the year, a can of honey
is set down in the woods, and
watched. When the bees come
lo the "bait." In sufficient num
bers, they are. "coursed" to their
trees, and its location noted, for
reference about this time uf the
year. The same method Is em
ployed in various spots, until the
bee-hunter, has quite i list of bee
trees.
When the wild bees have fin
ished their summer labors, and
are settling down for the winter,
the bee hunter comes with sntnke
pots. nio:-(inito netting and a sharp
nx, and divest.s the bees of their
savings.

:C. E. MAUD PLEADS
GUILTY BECAUSE'
OF OCEAN TRIP
C. K. Maud, retired mining engi
neer of Kan I'Yancisco, who lias
been coming here annually for the
past 10 years to fish in the Rogue
river, pleaded guilty in Judge Tay
lor's court today to an assaidt ami
battery chaise prelerred by 1 C.
Itigham last Saturday, the assault
incident having occurred while Hig
ham was crossing the property on
which the Maud cabin is located.
Maud was fined $!;" and costs.
Mr. Maud wants the public to
distinctly understand mat he is not
laying down in the controversy and
that he pleaded guilty only because
he and Mrs. Maud, who have been
at their cabin since last May, had
planned to leave next. Saturday for
Honolulu, and for him to have en
tered a plea of not guilty -would
have meant a jni y trial, which
would doubtless delay the Hono
lulu 'trip. It was only a picayuu
Ish matter, anyhow, he says, and
that if this assault incident results
in Hicham ceasing to cross his
property while on fishing trips, as
lie says lie lias been assured by
Judge Taylor and others, lie re
gards the fine money as well spent.
According to M r. Maud, whose
fishing cabin site with his live
acres is leased from the Modoc or
chard property management, Itig
ham for some time past hay per
sisted in crossin-:; his property
against his orders otherwise, and
was doing so again the other dav
when ho happened to run across
him.
Mr. Maud was very much peeved
ami, uttering remarks timt hail
nothing to do with the present na
tional ijolilical campaign, ho says
he seized a small stick, which was
so rotten that when if rested on
that part of eHte's body on which
he par lis when sitting down, it
broke meaning the stick. Mr.
Maud further explains that Pete
was running away from him at the
time, and that, the assault wan
merely a technical one.
Mr. Maud also says that Hig
ham's contention that ho has per
mission to cross Maud's leased land
when fishing is a false and absurd
one. He may have permission only
to cross the Modoc orchard prop
erty, Mr. Maud says, and further
that when permission was given
Bigham It was pointed out to the
latter at the time that this permis
sion did not apply to the Maud
lease, which is unfenced, hut is
well marked by trees.
Anyhow, Peto's dignity, or that
part of him that was struck by the
"rotten stick." was very much of
fended, and the insult could only
be eradicated by appealin-'; to the
majesty of the law.
