They have already lieen weli-nmed, and there is no (ueslion aliotit their liiivinj; a (jootl time. If tin; sounds hems; wafted into this .smictiiin from lielow, above, and from all sides, at tin; present writing are any criterion the lii'Kionnaires of the state are liaving the time of their lives. We hope they are. That's what they came for, and that is what the people of jjedford, particularly the local Lcniou men, have been working for the past half-year. So our only comment is "lio to it, boys!" Have the best time you can, mid if there is anything you want and haven't got, let us know and we will see if we can't provide it. Ami don't worry, this noise is not going to scare anyone. We all understartd. Becuiise the members of the Legion have a hilariously good time whenever they guther together, there may be an impres sion in some iputrters that the only purpose of the organization is to have a good time. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Legion is-made up of young men, in the prime of life, bound together by memories of patriotic service in foreign binds, and in the greatest war of all times. Naturally when they get together they enjoy themselves and kick up their heels in sheer exuberance of animal spirits. Hut, underneath it all they have u serious purpose, ami in Medford, as in other communities throughout the land, they have taken the leadership in all those worth-while and forward looking movements, designed to make this a better country in which to live. Medford owe!) her new children 's playground to the Ameri can Legion, Her airport, and the program for a new and mod ern one, are the result of Legion initiative and support. The care of disabled veterans, the enthusiastic support of the local Red Cross, both largely Legion accomplishments. In short, in any local movement that is particularly worth while, the Legion cannot only be depended uon to see that it is Klarted, -but more important, see that it. is finished, and finished right. Ho we are glad the Legion boys are here. They have done their country a. service ju the past which can't be repaid by higli-soundilig.words, They have continued that useful service in days of peace, and fully as important will be their service in the fight for better citizenship in the future. .So once more we arc glad you arc here, Legionnaires, and we are glad you are having a good time, tlo to it! The institute fears thousandu of n e w s p n per readers are in "no position to eheek Dr. Hrady's statements" about such a subject. A ny reader w h o va. res t u t a 1; o the triniblc may tet from the pub lie library a copy of Howell's "Text book of I'hjMlolnt,'y," or any other authoritative physioluKy book, and check my teachings about any ques tion of physiology. There is no secret about human physiology, ex cept tlie secret and under hande.l way in which some commercial in terests strive to prevent the leach ing of physiology in the Hchools or otherwise. Again I assert, and I challenge contradiction, that there, is ny ground for the absurd fancy that the skin absorbs anything, even though some physicians still be lieve or teach that certain dm us. say mercury, are absorbed through the skin when applied by inunction, that is, prolonged rubbing of the well cleansed skin with an oint ment containing the finely divided mercury. So good an authority as J Jr. 1 tenia rd Fan t us, noted as a teacher of therapeut ics and an author of books on the subject uf treatment with drugs, still insist, I believe, that mercury Is absorbed through the skin when tho drug Is applied in inunctions, but Dr. Kan tus cites no . scientific proof In support of his contention, only em piricism and traditional belief of the profession, t'nder the heading "Kuntus, fancy, Kantum." I com mented about this in reply to a query some lime ago, and I am ashamed now about this unwar- j ranted play upon tint name of a ; man for whom I did it In tho heat j of the moment, thanks to the Ma- chlavelian activity of a competitor of inlno whom it would be too good advertising to name. Dr. Fantus, though an H-minent authority in therapeutics, Is not, in my opinion an authority on physiology. Dr. Curl (1. Zwlek, a dermatolo gist, conducted exhaustive experi ments threo or four years ago to tint ermine whether mercury oint ment is absorbed through the skin. Me used guinea pigs, or maybe rabbits, and having applied the in unction under the most favorable conditions, be ma tit; microscopic sections of the skin at varying pe riods of time afterward ami sought for (lie minute mercury particles. He was unable to find any particles of mercury in the deeper part of the skin proper, only in the re cesses and the ducts of the oil glands MM he find particles of the mercury. Tills is probably Ihe most accurate scientific evidence we have bearing on tho ciuestlon of ahsorptlon through the skin, It !s negative and therefore doesn't prove anything, but If mercury is absorbed through ihe skin. Dr. ZwIcIc'h niolhnd of Investigation ought to show traces of it within the true skin. I am not debating the proposi tion that the skin is an organ, or even that it is a hard working or Biiu. whatever ibat may mean to you It doesn't mean anything (o me. 1 ani merely asserting n fair assumption, namely, tlmt nothing Is ever absorbed through the un broken or normal skin ami if one can educe any evidence to the contrary. I'd like to hear about it. ; Certainly no physiologist, no au 1 thority on physiology, asserts tb'it ! anything is absorbed through the , skin. M"l".STlONS Al ANSWIIKK 1 Shaving.
