Fast 1VJ v -rl7 re. r - ?wi A of a Qirl PERHAPS you recall . undirig in the newspapers ihc case of Gretchcn, the piteous story of a girl who poisoned her father and then, at her trial, steadfastly refused to utter a word in her own defense, preferring punish ment rather than describe the terrible details of the soul destroying life he had forced upon her. You read of her conviction and incarceration. There, apparently, the story ended. Hut really it was only the beginning of one of the most amazing human dramas ever enacted. In prison Gretchcn performed her duties in utter silence; noth ing interested her; she kept com pletely to herself - an outcast branded for life as a patricide. Then Miry Howard, instructor in in exclusive girl's seminary, came to teach in the prison. Hrr heart went out to the little soul-frozen daughter of the slums. She was kind to her, encouraged her, tried to make her feel that she was not a pariah but s girl like other girls. Later she thawed a little. Then o.ne night, in the seclusion of Mis Howard's room, the dam of her emotions burst and, her body wracked with sobs, she told tor the first time the dreadful story which, had she told it to the jury, would probably have resulted in her acquittal.
