H. There are a total of 3.r,K4 jdlots. ' A total of 201 1 new commercial airplanes and 3G military ami naval planes were built In tho United States lant year, an Increase of OS. 4 percent over liliNJ. largest production by one com pany was 4fi4 planes in 1027. Commercial airlines, '24 ; com mercinl air routes l:',fil'7 iuIIch; mall routes 77ii3 miles; express routeM 7IK miles; passe n g e r routes 7L'tr miles; Improved air ways 7000 miles iiy June of this year, air mall planeH of the United Mtates will be flying 25,000 miles dally a din tance equal to tbe circumference of tbe earth at the equator. With 80 station stops thene planes will be serving trade areas that em brace 62,300,000 people. There are on record more than four thousand fields in the United KtateH.on which lauding! can be made owned by states, munici palities,' corporal loon, clubs, com missions and Individuals. Already the United Ktates de partnient of commerce has entab llHhed an airway division with bea con lights marking tbe trunk lines from coast to coast and north to south, with dally mail travelling from coast to count in 30 hours. It tiles of InteiHtate commerce have been applied to the naviga tion of the air and all dependable pilots and their pianos are exam ined nnd licensed by the govern ment. Air mail poundage is showing gradual Increase, figures for Janu ary l'JL'7 being 7:t,:'.ra against 13H,- 115 In June 1!H!7. The weight of mall carried on airways between New York and San Francisco with some duplica tion, during I !i!7, was 750,000 pounds. The value of bank eheckn transmitted was npproxlmately $7.200,OOU.OOO. Mall and express included publications, photographs jewelry, moving picture films, snmpleH. These figures are for mall and xpress only, exclusive of freight; (me line alone, operating between Detroit and Cleveland and Cleve land and Detroit and Chicago transported In IWl'fi. a total of 1.730.000 pounds of freight. The planes of one American air- express company fly farther In a single day than all the combined lights of the laifthansa lines In Oernuiny and nearly twice as fat as the combined flights of the Im perial Airways of Kngtaud. Casualties in scheduled airway flying are already comparatively rare. On our national airway under the supervision of the army 1.00,000 miles have been flown with only oirb serious accident, Tricks in Making Car Adjustments "Although U mlKht cost mo n I'ulf t)U!4ini'N.i, I wouMii't miml ptayln' prufcHsnr to mime of my customer who want to learn n few nf the liirkrt In uiakln' nil JutmentM on their ears If I eotilil ftet tu't-oNH to litem that heat in everythiHK In an aulomhile." Studebaker sales for every month since September have shown an increase over the corresponding mouth of the previous year. The progress Studebaker has been making from the standpoint of sales is paralleled by the pro gress it has made In establishing new speed and endurance records during the past eight months. The most notable of theso records was made last fall by a Studebaker Commander when It traveled 2 5, 000 mtlcH in less than l!3.00o min utes. Nothing else ever traveled so far so fast. AV-Answer-ing inquiries concerning the so called "turken." the department of agriculture declares it is altogether litiprobable the fowl is a cross be tween the chicken and the turkey. Crosses have been obtained be- 'tween the chicken and the pheas : ant. the department says, but their : progeny always have been sterile. Judging from iho naked neck of the "turken." authorities say it is extremely likely the fowl has tho blond of the Transylvania naked neck breed -of chickens, which originated In West India ami al ways has retained the distinct characteristic. Here is a real springtime tribute to a motor car. just received by Walter P. Chrysler from Ityron J. King, of Pittsburg, who says: "I have been driving one of your '71!' sedans." It has seemed to mo from the very first time that I took tho wheel in my hand that Chrysler cars possess a distinct personality, a personality that changes with the character of the driver, with the season of the year, with the hour of the day. IN FULL FORCE Spring is here, and as the roads 'dry the highway department be ! gin coating them with oil an a ! dust preventative. This is rewult i ing In a great many complaints due to the fnct that oil on cars Is jboth difficult and expensive to re 1 move, and the motorist who trav i els over an oiled road finds It almost Impossible to prevent oil I from being thrown or splashed on i his car. The state highway department I has co-operoteT" with the Oregon 'state Motor association In attempt ing to arrive at some solution for the oil nuisance, and the following enters have been given by the highway department to tho various oiling crews responsible for the work, with the Idea of making oil ing operations as safe and con venient as possible. "All operations, whether In oil ing or bituminous macadam work, will proceed over one-half of the width of roadway at a time. Where ever possible detours will bo pro vided and maintained. Under these circumstances the nil will be placed on one-half of the roadway at a time so ns to permit local people to use tho sections without becoming splashed with oil. When detours are provided for all but local traffic, one way traffic will not be maintained. Flagmen will warn the occasional motorist to be careful In passing. Furthermore, there will be other sections carry ing light traffic where there are no I detours available, in which tho shoulders are of sufficient width to permit two. way traffic, after one half of ttie roadway lgas been oiled. Flagmen will slop each one and advise him of the necessity of using cure in passing. On heavy traveled roads, whether there is room for two way traffic after one strip lias been oiled or not, one way traffic will bo maintained so as to avoid any possible accident. In all cases the distance of one way traffic will be kept ns short ns possible. Itcfore the first oiled sec tion Is opened to truffle nnd the oiling of the. second half begins, sufficient screenings will be placed on any wet oil so ns to prevent splashing.
