Hp UK I'KOl'IiR lmvc Hum far learned very little that is new A about tlie Mitchell case, but they have learned 'considerable conecriiing court martials. In tho popular mind, court innrtials have represented, hereto fore, au arbitrary and rigid form of procedure, Hurroundcd by mili tary red tape, in which a defendant unpopular with the court, had no more chance of justice than tho proverbial snow ball. f It has come, therefore, as n complete surprise to discover that the present court martial, unquestionably in sympathy with the prosecution, has shown u spirit of fairness and a desire to deter mine tho truth which suggests at least that the average civ court has considerable to learn from army procedure. There is little doubt that if Mitchell had been trjed before civil court, n large part of the testimony presented by the defense would have been stricken out under the rules of evidence. The prosecution altcmptcd to do this, but in every instauco the cour martial ruled that the defense should proceed. In fact, upon investigation, one discovers that a military cour is not hampered bytechnicalities of procedure, and precedents of practice, which so seriously . obstruct the wheels of justice in the civil courts of law. ; The members of a court martial are given a free hand to get at the f:.cts and determine the truth. If they are just and honest men, a defendant before court martial, particularly one without wealth, has a far better chance of a square deal than a defendant in civil life. "Whether Mitchell is acquitted or convicted, there is every reason thus far to believe that he has been treated with fairness and gen erosity. . Incidcntly the trial has demonstrated that the court martial sfarled from a point, of common sense procedure, from which it has not departed, and to which it is to bo hoped that civil court pro cedurc, will, through reforms and technical' readjustments, even tually return. , Personal Health Service Cy WILLIAM BRADY. hL IX. Very frequently you will hold a hand containing good cards and food help for a no-trump bid, but also a singleton or(Void suit which makes the no-trump bid a doubtful proposition. With this type of hand try to find the suit bid that best fits the combined hands of yourself and your partner. For example, suppose your partner bids no trump, second hand passes, and you hold the following hand: Hearts A, K,7, ' ' " Clubs A, J, 9, 8, 2 ' Diamonds 4 Spades 9,7,5 "' With this hand you 'should bid two hearts and if your partner bids two no trump, bid three clubs. It is a strong hand and ought to make game at either hearts or clubs. On the other hand the opponents may make a five card dia mond or spade suit against no-trump and so save game. The hands of all four players were as follows: Hearts I. 5.2 Clubs K, 7 : Diamonds A, 10. 8, S, 3 : A Spadci 8,4, 2 : Hearts A, K, 7, fi Clubs A, J, 9, 8,2 Diamonds 4 Spades 9,7, S Y Z Hearts 10,4 Clubs 6,5,3 Diamonds K, Q, 9, 0 Spadet K, 10. 6,3 Hearts Q, 9, 8,3 Clubs Q, 10,4 Diamonds J, 7, 2 Spades A, Q, J Z bid one no-trump and A passed. If Y passes, b will pass and A will open the five of diamonds, thus making five uiamona tricks and saving game. 11 V bids two hearts, he wilf make a small slam, quite a difference. The distribu tion of a hand will freauentlv warrant a take-out with a minor suit. For ex ample, if partner bids one no-trump and second Band passes, bid two clubs with the following hand: . . Hearts 6,5 Clubs A, Q, 10,9,7,5 Diamonds A, J, 9, 5 Snarles 7 This hand is good for five odd In clubs and only two odd in no-trump. Always wc oucwiin any seven or more card minor suit irrespective nf the Hicirlbn. tion. With hands divided 6-4-2-1 or 6-3-3-1 or 4-4-4-1 or 5-4-4,'try to figure '" way io piay tne nann at a suit bid rather than no-trump. Hands of this type seldom go game at no-trump and reprasent.the typical distribution take outs. -.v. The following hands were given as problems in the preceding article with the understanding that partner has bid .' no-trump and second hand has passed: Hand No. 1 Hearts 10, 8,2 Clubs 7,5 -Diamonds A, 10, 8, 5, 4 1 Spades 8, 4, 3 . With the foregoing hand the partner of the no-trump bidder should1 pass. There is no reason for a bid of two diamond. Hand No. 2 . Hearts .K, 6, 5 ;-. . Clubs 9,5 - Diamonds J, 7, S Spades J, 10, 8, 3, 2 With the foregoing hand the partner of the no-trump bidder should bid two spades. The hand is of no possible help to the no-trump and so comes under the rule for an obligatory take-out. Hand No. 3 Hearts A, 4 - Clubs 7 Diamonds 1, 10, 9, 4, S, 2 Spades A,K,Q,4 With this hand the partner of the no trump bidder should bid two spades. There is a bad distribution for the no trump, - Hand No. 4 Hearts A, 1,9,6,5 Clubs A, 5 . - i Diamonds 7, 6, 5, 4 Spades A, 3 With this hand the partner of the m trump bidder should bid two hearts. It looks like game in hearts or ns-trump, but the hearts is a safer bid. As a matter of fact, there was a little slam In hearts and only two odd In no-trump. "The stronger the hand, the better the take, out.'' Either A or B may take the lead at the third trick. Suppose B plays, the nine of hearts at trick two. Then Z plays the trey of hearts and A wins the trick with the seven of hearts. Y should now dis card the seven of diamonds. A cannot lead spades for if he does, Z will make three tricks so he must lead a club. If he leads the king, Y should play the jack. If he leads a low club, Y should Play the jack and lead back the queen. If A takes that trick, he cannot force Y in the lead for Y has the deuce of clubs. A must therefore lead the spadet toZ'shand. Suppose, however, at trick two, B plays a low heart. Z should then lead the trey of hearts. Y should discard the deuce of clubs and B wins the trick with the nine of hearts. He must lead dia monds.
