Brown of Salem, recently of Ohio, where ho Ikih Junt completed a five year child welfare demonstration, which he Ih now be ginning in Marlon county, gave a ahort after dinner speech concerning the welfare of the modern child. He cited the fact that present day chil dren could be compared to cattle In tho way of being reared, as stock In some cases Ih given more atten tion to health matters by ownerH thun thefr own children, but which condition Is now changing, as chil dren are receiving an equal attention in regard to their health for the present and future. Smith then arose to thank the county health association .upon their hospitality of tendering tho banquet, and went on to voice words of praise in connection with the association's progressive spirit. It Is probable that Northern California will he rcprcKcntcd also by delegates from some of their towns. Tho counties of Cooh, Curry, .Jose phine, Douglas, Klamath, and Jaek- hoii will be represented by delegates from their numerous towns and cities. These young people will be out of the high schools and will represent some of the finest of the young life of church and school and city among the girlhood of the southern part of the state. It will bo the privilege of every one In Med ford whether on a committee or not to do all In their power to make tho stay of theso girls and their chiin erones just as enjoyanle and profita ble as possible. Oregon girls have mode a good rec ord elsewhere. The Oregon delega tion of five girls captured the state shield, a valuable trophy offered at the national conference of of Older (iirls at (ieneva Glen. Colorado. This trophy was given to the state whose delegation registered the highest ef ficiency. This shield will bo brought to the Southern Oregon conference -to go with others to the next national conference to help defend and bring back the shield again. Delegates will arrive Friday and will be met ut all trains and assigned to their places of entertainment for bed and breakfast by the housing committee of which Mrs. V. W. Walk er Is chairman. Mrs. Grlgshy Is ef ficiently handling the local arrange ments for the conference In general. A banquet Is being planned for Satur day evening for all delegates, both local unU from out of tho city. On Sunday night there will be a mass meeting of delegates and churches In the Methodist church to hear the iuokI Interesting illustrated lecture "The It ridge of tho Cods,' by Airs. Plans are also under way to take the girls on a trip to Crater Lake Monday and return the same day If tho weather Is favorable. The Cham ber of Commerce is giving most cor dial ami valuable assistance in every way possible, helping especially In ' making possible the banquet and the, Crater ljiko trip. The meetings will begin on Friday : evening with registration and welcome of guests and will continue ull day Saturday. On Sunday there will be a 0:30 a. in. prayer and devotional serv ice the delegates will then scatter to tho various churches for their regular sorvlcos. tho day closing with a grout service In tho Methodist church. All services will bo In the Baptist church except tho banquet and tho Sunday night meeting. To travel approximately 315 miles In less than nine hours Is an accom plishment credited to u local motor ist, whose name is withheld for fear of motor coj) action. According to indirect information, the irip was made from Ftoseburg to Crater Lake und return via Medford. then to llornhrook, Calif., between the hours of U:3& a. m. and 0:30 p. m. Tho campaign leuders feel assured the people will see them through und get the full quota for J.tckson county. -Captain Ouy, the local officer, with his wife, are doing ull In their power to aid all who are worthy. They will appreciate help und will he glad for any to come to the quarters re porting cases or culling them by phone. Flro Losses Hero Decrease. During the month of August four teen fro alarms were turned into tho fire department, which fires aggregat ed a loss of approximately $100 within the city, excluding fire louses occurring out of tho city limits. Of the fourteen fires only one was a grass fire, the others being of u miscellaneous nature, which included automomblle, closet, Junk yard, and roof fires. During August of 11)24, $000 dam age was caused by six fires, showing a decrease of several hundred dollars for this year.
