No rooty oan oo koomoo or. wiiaui BMoVt ir Jro of tu in Honestly, How A year or two ago, a reader reminds ub, we pro mined to it'll how a mere layman might diugnose hlB own health. Itlht, and a week or two later, we told how the trick is done. Of course, a mere layman's diagnosis of anything is about as sound as Ik my knowledge of how to fill a root canal or take up a cam nhAft hearing. At that, though, a layman can make a fairly good tentative analy sis of his own health. A tentative diagnosis Is like a mail order suit; you nre not bound to keep it If it doesn't fit 'and givo entire sat isfaction. Indeed, the layman client contributes considerable to tbe. ding-, nosis in the modern periodic health examination: in eomeVt the forms or examination blanks which have been suggested by physicians who devote special-attention to the practice of hy giene, the layman apparently contrib utes more than the hygienlst himself to tho diagnosis, but perhaps that is because the hygienlst who devisi-ft the form of examination has not had suf ficient experience in tho practice of he'nlth. Here Is one test of henUh which anybody up to the age of 50 years may try on himself: Hun a mile. If you can't run a mile, at your own pace. yoij aro certainly not well you had better consult a physician and let him find out what ails you. Here is another test which anybody of nny ago may try on himself: Holt! your breath on the one hand and your watch on the other. If you can't hold the former 43 seconds you had better consult a good doctor. Suppose an individual has a "leak age of tho heart, valvular disease. which has developed insidiously or at least without his knowledge that any heart lesion is responsible for his fall ing off in physical or mental efficien cy. If the backflow or leakage through the damaged valve is not compensated by pw necessary development of. heart muscle, such nn individual wit) be un able to ho1d his breath ns long as 40 seconds lje will 5'brwak" and grab In more air at ptrhaps 5 or 30 seconds nr even less. If hs valvular fenkage is "compensated" by the necessary over development of j,he heart muscle (so that enougli blood is pumped to satis fy the . requirements In spire o( the amount which leaks ba k through the valve at CA'ery beat), why! the lucky lad can hold his breath as long as a'ny of us. and his health is O. l not- Wthstnndin the vnlvutnf impairment. There nre some Individuals who can easily hold their breath, a full minute, without nny tricks. They are not nec 'essarily healthier than the resf oi us by reason of that.. There are some Individuals whfe health is gravely Impaired, vho are Huuering wiih serious disease, yet can hold their breaih 40 seconds. That would seem to spoil the test ns a measure of health Hut I told you at the Cutset that the layman can make only a tentative diagnosis of his own health: he needs the cooperation of the expert if he wishes to have his dlannosis confirmed. If you consider yourself At 111 very much alive but have no convenient place to run off your mile test, here is a test which Is almost as good, so far jas the efficiency of your circulation 'may be concerned: Run up two flights of stairs, two stairs at a step, and notice your heart aeldon when you attain the summit: if your heart is efficient, yeu'll - feel the thump, thump against your ribs as the accel eration Induced by the .effort passes and the heart rate again Blows down to the qrdinary rate. If you do not feel the thump .thump, you nre not as sound as you really ought to be. ; ' Ql'KSTIOXS AND AXSWEUS, Infantile I'nraljKtH, Our little boy, aged 10 years, fell on the Ice striking the back of his head and shortly nfterward fell on a tire iron and struck his hip.
